Recycling is a process converting the waste materials such as plastic bottle, paper, and

aluminum into a new object or thing and it is a good step in saving our Earth. In Malaysia, there

are over 23,000 tonnes of waste that are produced every day (Solid Waste in Malaysia).

According to Suwandari, Julina and Miftah (2015), lack of awareness on recycling lead to

increased waste materials. Most of the people are not aware of the recycling behaviour because

they do not get the exposure of the knowledge on how to do recycling properly. A study showed

that education is one of the main socio-demographic variables that relate to people’s

participation in recycling (Miranda & Blanco, 2009). It showed that the education on recycling is

the most important element in order to raise up the awareness of recycling behaviour. According

to Elsawahli and Mohit (2010), the awareness of recycling behaviour among the Kulliyyah of

Architecture and Environmental Design student at International Islamic University Malaysia

(IIUM) increased because of the facilities such as the recycling bin are been provided at the

faculty. The students used lots of paper based materials for their project and because of that they

need a proper way to recycle it back. Besides, they have an environmental knowledge and they

get the fully understanding on the importance of the recycling because they has been trained to

be a designer that imply the environment friendly concept to their project. The facilities did help

the students to practice the recycling behaviour and it did help to increase the awareness among

them. Hence, it is important to have a proper knowledge and information on the recycling

technique.

For this project, the theory used is The Value-Belief-Norm Theory of Environmentalism

(VBN) which takes into account of the social psychological determinants of the adoption of these
norms and establishes strong relationships with the pro-environmentalist ideas of their norms by

Stern et al., (1999).

Besides, social pressure can be one of the factor that can motivate people to recycling

(Suwandari, Julina & Miftah, 2015). It is a pressure that the individual get from their family and

friends where they will be a pressure that urge them to do recycling because of their environment

that influences them to do so. In Japan, most of the Japanese will segregate the solid waste such

as food container, cans and mineral bottle into the recycling bin and they will clean any food

waste from the container properly before sorting it into the bin.
