Why Emotions?

FACTORS OF STUDENT SUCCESS:

Class Size

Socioeconomic Status Emotional intelligence

The ability to recognize and address emotions.

Environment

There is no current product on the market that accurately provides the information teachers and researchers need.

Emotional intelligence in the classroom has the strongest link to student success yet: Therefore:

- Emotional intelligence only comes from natural abilities and experience - Teachers need an aid that provides emotional awareness

- Researchers current data comes from biased/inaccurate observations and - Researchers need quantitative data on student’s emotional
self-reports reactions
Primary Research

“How a student feels affects their Over 90% of teachers and students
learning tremendously. I try my best agreed that:
to recognize my students feelings
- Emotional awareness aids learning
and reactions but you can’t catch
everything.” - Something that helps build this awareness is both
needed and welcomed

Design for non-profit
Interdisciplinary Group Project
The Client

Identifying areas for our group to develop solutions for:

Freedom United is a non-profit which works to: Freedom United needs to:
- Raise awareness of human trafficking + modern slavery - Reach a younger demographic

- Advocate for + promote smaller nonprofits (“ground - 47% of existing users are aged 55+
partners”) fighting modern slavery
- Engage current members
- Facilitate signing of petitions + real-world rallies/events
- Both online and off

Surveys
Interviews + Surveys

We conducted semi-structured interviews with members of the

Freedom United Leadership as well as guerilla research using surveys
and intercept interviews.

We were able to combine our research with a few survey results

conducted by, and provided to us by Freedom United to create a larger
pool of research to learn from.

Journey + Empathy Maps

The insights and data from our research were used to create
personas, journey maps, and empathy maps which we used to
guide our design choices.

Brainstorming Prototyping + User Testing

Brainstorming + Prototyping + User Testing

Drawing from our research and personas, we

developed our solutions through multiple
brainstorming and feedback sessions.

We developed prototypes of several solution

directions and conducted moderated usability
testing.

Based on our understanding of both Freedom

United and their target users’ needs as well as our
findings through user testing, we developed
multi-phase solutions for Freedom United that they
could start implementing immediately and develop
as funding allows.
Solution Phase 1

- Physical patches and stickers

for existing rewards system

- Immediate email format change

Physical objects help participants feel like they are

“living the abolitionist lifestyle.”

- Create a sense of pride and community,

resulting in more motivation to take action

- Talking points to introduce more people to

Freedom United

Email format delivers information quickly and

includes links to take action or learn more

- Easier to learn and stay updated = more long

term participation

- More people will take action

- Simpler format is more appealing to younger

members.
Solution Phase 2

- Website changes to petition

pages

- Addition of an informational
map on website

Addition of a community section to the petition pages

- Lists member’s name among other petition

signers

- Member feels like they are making a real

impact

- Option to remain anonymous

Informational map system can be easily changed by

Freedom United to include whatever information they
want

- Users can get a clearer idea of what modern

slavery is, what it affects, and where it
happens
Solution Phase 3

- Expansion of map use

- Inclusion of map in installations

The map system from the website can be easily

formatted for various public displays

- Different aspect ratios

- Interactive vs. non interactive

- Cycling displays vs. single view

- Locations could include bus stops, mall

maps, and taxi screens

A detailed map will become an installation on a road

show planned by Freedom United

- The map can also be a stand alone

installation in places such as museums, first
fridays, schools, and galleries.
