I. The generally accepted parts of modern cell theory include

EXCEPT: (Circle the number(s) or underline the sentence(s) of your correct choice.)
1. All known living things are made up of one or more cells
2. All living cells arise from pre-existing cells by division.
3. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms.
4. The activity of an organism depends on the total activity of independent cells.
5. Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) occurs within cells.
6. Cells contain DNA which is found specifically in the chromosome and RNA found in the cell
nucleus and cytoplasm.
7. All cells arise spontaneously.
8. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition in organisms of similar species.
9. Energy flow occurs within cells.
10. Heredity information (DNA) is passed on from cell to cell.
11. All cells have the same basic chemical composition.

II. Define and give examples for each of the following

mechanisms of cellular transport:
1. Simple Diffusion_______________________________________________________________

2. Osmosis _____________________________________________________________________

3. Facilitated Diffusion____________________________________________________________

4. Active Transport ______________________________________________________________

5. Endocytosis __________________________________________________________________

V. Cell City Analogy
In a far away city called Grant City, the main export and
production product is the steel widget. Everyone in the town has
something to do with steel widget making and the entire town is
designed to build and export widgets. The town hall has the
instructions for widget making, widgets come in all shapes and sizes
and any citizen of Grant can get the instructions and begin making
their own widgets. Widgets are generally produced in small shops
around the city, these small shops can be built by the carpenter's
union (whose headquarters are in town hall).

After the widget is constructed, they are placed on special carts which can deliver the
widget anywhere in the city. In order for a widget to be exported, the carts take the widget to
the postal office, where the widgets are packaged and labeled for export. Sometimes widgets
don't turn out right, and the "rejects" are sent to the scrap yard where they are broken down for
parts or destroyed altogether. The town powers the widget shops and carts from a hydraulic dam
that is in the city. The entire city is enclosed by a large wooden fence, only the postal trucks (and
citizens with proper passports) are allowed outside the city.

Give the function of the following cell parts and match it with the parts of the city (underlined).

9. Nucleolus ________________________________________________________________

Group Project (Tentative Date of Presentation: 3rd week of January 2019)

Together with your group members, create your own analogy of the cell using a
different model. Some ideas might be: a school, a house, a factory, or anything
you can imagine. Present your analogy to the class by staging a role-play**
