LOADS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 Referred to the external forces acting on a
rigid body
(Strength of Materials by Sarkar)

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 These loads may arise due to dead loads of
members, live loads, wind loads,
earthquake effects, fluid pressures, support
settlements, frictional resistance, etc.

CONCEPT OF STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

SIMPLE STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

Stress is the expression of force applied to a unit area of
surface.

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions
 The unit of stress is N/m2

F : load applied in
pounds
A : cross sectional
area in in²
σ : stress in psi

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

TYPES OF SIMPLE STRESSES

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

NORMAL STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 Stress that always act normal to the
stresses surface under consideration

 The stress that acts perpendicular

to the resisting area of the material

𝑨 𝑷 = applied normal load

TENSILE STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 The stress occurs when equal and
opposite forces are applied to a body, and
the resistance offered by a section of the
body is against the increase in length.
 The stress occur when the material is
being pulled by two opposing forces

COMPRESSIVE STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 When equal and opposite forces are
applied to a body, and the resistance
offered by a section of the body is against
the decrease in length.
 The stress occur when the material is
being compressed by two opposing forces.

SHEAR STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 When equal and opposite forces act
tangentially on any cross-sectional plane of
a body, tending to slide its one part over
the other at that plane, the body is said to
be in a state of shear.
 The intensity of the shear stress is given by:
Where
𝑽 𝝉 = shear stress
𝝉=
𝑨 𝑽 = Resultant shearing force
𝑨 = area; multiplied by 2 for
double shear
BEARING STRESS

Fundamental Concepts & Definitions

 Bearing stress is the contact pressure
between the separate bodies. It differs from
compressive stress, as it is an internal stress
caused by compressive forces.
 The intensity of the bearing stress is given
by:

𝑷𝒃 𝑷 = applied normal load

𝑨𝒃 𝑨 = area
