31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits

Last November 10 to 14, 2017 was the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held. The whole week
was full of agenda relating to the current needs to be addressed. The key happenings in the conference was
China agreeing to a South China Sea of Conduct, addressing terrorism, imposing pressure on North Korea
for their nuclear and missile program, protecting migrant workers and trading with Russia. Together with the
other partnered countries, many agreements and situations were discussed. The summits altogether was a
successful event and has caused great opportunities with the countries in it.
Starting from the South China Sea of Conduct. As stated by our President Duterte, China agreed
that countries would have “unbridled and unfettered” access to the West Philippine Sea. They turned their
inhabitable lands to security facilities. They will be discussing this matter within the following months.
The ASEAN, US, Australia and other partner countries will help to enforce a stronger security
measures and laws regarding the current status of terrorism. The US and ASEAN promised to share
information about law enforcement corporation in order to increase their safety measures and strategies. The
US and Philippines also committed to share and enhance their counter-terrorism cooperation. Also, the both
countries would tackle about the origins of it.
The US, ASEAN and East Nations also agreed to help to impose pressure on the regime of nuclear
and missile program held by the North Korea. These countries committed to secure and confront North Korea
regarding this matter. Also, they tackled about the security control and measure due to the threat that a
nuclear missile would be arriving at the mainland of US.
The Southeast Asian leaders signed a document imposing protection regarding the interests and
welfare of the migrant workers in that district. According to philstar.ph, the some sections of document
encompasses the workers’ fair treatment, provision of visitation rights for their families, prohibition of
confiscation of passports and overcharging of recruitment fees, protection against sexual violence and
harassment, respect for fair remuneration and benefits and right to join unions and associations.
The country of Russia also agreed to expand their trade relation. As explained by Duterte, the
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev stated that they will remain associating to fight terrorism and
provide weapons to aid in maintaining peace and order across the country.
The summits was a success and provided great opportunity to the welfare and improvements
regarding the needs of the partnered countries and also the Philippines. It will significantly address their
problems regarding security, aid and protection. We are looking forward for the enforcement of these
agreements and joint forces. It was a great pleasure to be able to confide with other countries regarding this
matters. There will surely be positive outcomes in the following days to come. Together we’ll stand and fight
for what’s right and just.
