UNIT 1. THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS

What is technology?
Technology is the practical application of knowledge (science) and skills (techniques) to create
solutions (technological objects or systems) which satisfy our needs or solve our problems.

What is technological process?

The technological process is the work method used by technology and consists of the ordered
sequence of steps that must be followed in order to meet a need or solve a problem.

Need or Technological
Solution
problem process

The stages of technological processes

•Analyse the need or problem and the possible constraints

Need •Study similar cases and their solutions (background)

•Propose one or several solutions

Idea •Agree and choose the best solution

Develop the •Prepare plans and measurements

•Prepare the process sheet-group work plan
idea •Prepare an estimate (of cost)

Construction • Construct and test

• Evaluate
Check • Write the final report

The process sheet- group work plan: plan the construction process and decide:

 What you are going to do.

 Who is going to do it.
 How you are going to do it.
 When you are going to do it.
 How long it is going to take.

Example of a process sheet:

Drawing of the Number of Materials and Construction Person Estimated

piece (with identical tools needed procedures responsible time
measurements) pieces

Materials: Measure
20
 Board 20 cm x 25 cm Mark

Tools: Cut
25

2
 Ruler, set squares, File
protactor
10  Saw Sand
 Round file
 Sandpaper Glue

The report: is the set of documents that describe the technological process you followed.

Therefore, the report has two basic goals: to explain the method you used and show the solution
you obtained.

Activities:

1) Why do we need the following objects? Are there other objects that satisfy the same need?

 Pen:
 Car:
 Vacuum cleaner:
 Coin:
Example: We need a pen to write things. A pencil can satisfy the same need.

2) Give two examples of technological objects that are used to satisfy them.

a) Listening to music:

b) Making furniture:

c) Moving people from one place to another:

d) Communicating:

3) Look at the photographs and answer these questions:

a) Why do we need these objects?

b) What did we use in the past (before these objects existed) for the same needs?

Example: We need a camera to have pictures of people and places. In the past people
painted pictures.
