Performance Task for the First Quarter:

APPLICATION OF DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN REAL LIFE SITUATIONS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

RATIONALE:
This task helps the students to apply their learned skills in a real-life situation. It also leads to the target of the
performance standards of the subject to accurately construct mathematical models to represent real-life
situations using functions.
In this task, the students are able to perform concepts using mathematical models. Students are expected to
collaborate among the members of the group and present properly and accurately the task that they have
analyzed and found out.
The students should analyze the problem conceptually to demonstrate understanding about mathematical model
which they have learned.

GOAL:
Search for situations/patterns to create a mathematical model using any object or occurrences that can be seen
or applied in your community.

ROLE:
Your group were chosen to represent Adamson University in the International Mathematics Conference 2019.

AUDIENCE:
Members of Mathematics Teachers’ Association of the Philippines

SITUATION:
In line with the celebration of International Mathematics Week, Mathematics Teachers’ Association of the
Philippines will be conducting a conference that will showcase different mathematical models in different
communities. The said association selected Adamson University as one of the participating schools on the said
event. The University chose your group as one of the participants to represent the institution in the event. The
participants are tasked to demonstrate five (5) mathematical models using any object or occurrences that can be
seen or applied in their respective community.

PRODUCT:
Mathematical model/equation.

STANDARD:
To choose the best student, he/she must satisfy the following criteria (to be evaluated using rubric):
a. Content and Accuracy
b. Presentation And Organization
c. Creativity
d. Cooperation
Problem #1

In our barangay, there’s a store full of candy named “ candy crazed”. They sell a pack of candies (x) for 15
pesos. If you’re going to buy 6-10 packs of candies, they will cut the price into 10 pesos each, but if you are
going to buy 15 packs or more than, they will sell each pack of candies for 5 pesos only. How much it will cost
if I buy 13 pack of candies tomorrow and 7 pack of candies next week?

x = pack of candies

Given Problem:

a. Write a Piecewise function that relies on the given problem

b. How much cost if I will buy 13 pack of candies (x) tomorrow?
c. How much if 7 pack of candies (x) next week?

Solution:
Problem #2

A Taho seller near our village sells taho (x) 15 pesos each. But since he knows me, If i buy two taho (x), there
will be a free one, and If I buy 4 taho (x) , he will give me 2 additional free taho (x). How much taho will I
have if I’m willing to buy 5 taho?

x= number of taho

Given Problem:

a. Write a Piecewise function that represents the given problem.

b. How many taho will I have If I buy 5 taho?
c. How many taho will I have if I buy 3 taho?

Solution
Problem #3

Visitors are given 15 minutes to park within our place but if they’re gonna stay for long, they are asked to park
outside. If they reached 15 minutes of parking, 50 pesos will be charged. If they exceed the given time limit,
another 50 pesos will be added to their payment according to how many minutes they exceeded.

x= time

Given Problem :

a. Write a Piecewise Function that represents the problem.

b. Supposed he/she parked for 12 minutes.
c. Supposed he/she parked for 22 minutes.
