Lesson Idea Name: Points, Lines, and Equations

Content Area: Accelerated Geometry& Algebra 2
Grade Level(s): 9th -10th grade

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.A.CED.2: Create linear, quadratic, and exponential

equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph
equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales. (The phrase “in two or more variables”
refers to formulas like the compound interest formula, in which A = P(1 + r/n) nt has multiple
variables.)
Technology Standard Addressed:
3.C. Establish a learning culture that promotes curiosity and critical examination of online resources and
fosters digital literacy and media fluency.
5.b. Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and
resources to maximize active, deep learning.

Selected Technology Tool: Laptop or computer

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson ideas follow the Universal design for learner guidelines.
In the Affective networks, the “Why” of learning, Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity and
Optimize individual choice and autonomy. In the Recognition networks, the “What of learning”,
the option for comprehension are provided. (Especially, Activate or supply background
knowledge.) In Strategic Networks, the “How of learning”, physical activity was strongly
provided in this lesson ideas. (Vary the methods for response and navigation, Optimize access to
tools and assistive technologies)

Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, the student will find the slope and equation of linear graph between any two points on
the graph and tables through using the “points, lines, and equations” simulation from the Gizmo. This
activity will take 40 minutes and the teacher should already teach the y= mx+b formula.
At the beginning of the class, the teacher will show how to use simulation to students so they will not
be confused about using simulation. Then, the teacher will give worksheet to the student and go
around the class to help students when they need it.
The learning goal is to know what each of values (x-values, y-values, b, and m) are meaning in
y=mx+b and to know how to find slope with given two points. So, at the end of the class, the teacher
will give exit quiz to check do students know how each of values is come from and how to find slope
with given two points.
Reflective Practice
The Student will know what does y=mx+b formula means, what each of values works and how to
find the slope given two points after using “points, lines, and equation” simulations. Furthermore,
students can find the slope without drawing graph and tables.
