How school children are coping with 'eco-
anxiety' as they worry about climate change
P rimary school age children say
they're worried about climate
change and want to do their bit to
tackle it.
An Australian study has found that
nearly 90 percent of children are
worried about climate change. Nearly
70 percent of the children said they
thought about climate change issues
every day.
Eco-anxiety is the term used to describe
the fear of global warming, and the
worry that not enough is being done to
stop it.
Children at a school in Wellington had
similar concerns.
A pupil at St Francis de Lanes school in
Island Bay said: "I feel worried, not just
for the animals, but for us, because with
climate change, ice bergs are starting
to melt, and that means sea levels will
rise."
The overwhelming response from the
kids in the school was one
of anxiety, or eco-anxiety.
Associate Professor in
Psychology at the University
of Auckland Dr Niki Harre
described the anxiety as a
"mist" over young people's
future.
"I think what eco-anxiety is
like for most young people
is this other dimension," she
said.
"So, it's like a film or cloud or
mist over the future, that just
makes it that bit harder to
leap into it with enthusiasm."
But pupils at the school are
looking to reduce their own
plastic waste and change how
they travel because of their concerns.
St Francis de Lanes school has also
taken part in a week-long programme
organised by the social enterprise,
Squawk Squad.
Squawk Squad is a social enterprise that
aims to connect and engage a country
in the protection and growth of our
native bird life.

said she learned about climate change
on the news, from her parents, and at
school. She talked about it with her
friends and they discussed what they
should be doing to help stop it.
Her mother, Karen, said six weeks ago,
Lara was beginning to feel very stressed
about it. So, to combat that anxiety, they
made a list of things they could do.
"We came up with some simple things
we were going to do," Karen said.
As a result of making the list, the eco-
anxiety faded.
They have even swapped meat for
vegetables.
"When mum told us that our friend was
doing meat-Free Mondays, we decided
we should eat more veggies instead of
eating meat so much," Lara said.
Dr Harre said searching for solutions
was a great way to turn anxiety into
action.
Children currently are acting, on an
unprecedented scale, across the world.
Millions are expected to take part in
a global school strike this Friday, but

Arrested NZ resident faces
murder charges in Fiji

Ground reality between
India- Pakistan, beyond rhetoric
A lot of noise is being made by India’s
neighbouring country, since India
abrogated its Article 370 & 35A, which
gave special status to the then state of
Jammu & Kashmir. It was a unanimous
resolution of Indian parliament passed in
February 1994, to take the entire Kashmir
valley back, including illegally occupied
area by Pak or POK, by the Narsimha
Rao led Congress government. Modi
government has just taken first step in
that direction by scrapping the temporary
provision of special status given to Jammu
& Kashmir government during the time of
independence.
Those making hue and cry about scrapping
of this special status seem to overlook and
ignore the very basis of article 370, that it
was a temporary arrangement, which had
to be removed at some point of time and
70 years was long enough time to give it,
for any reason whatsoever. Prime Minister
Modi got a bigger mandate in his second
term from the people of India to take strong
decisions specially on matters lingering
on for many decades and which are vital
for country’s sovereignty, integrity and
security. The whole nation stood behind
this decision of Modi government and
celebrated all over the country. The only
people opposing this decision were either
some opposition parties including Congress
Party and Pakistan. Congress Party high
command’s this anti national stance
went against them and several prominent
Congress leaders revolted against the Party
and openly supported Modi government
on the decision. Modi showed his sincere
intentions to normalise relations with
all the neighbouring countries including
Pakistan from the first day, hence he invited
all the head of states for his swearing in
ceremony after his election to the office
during his first term. Pakistan unfortunately
failed to respond to Modi’s goodwill gesture
and repeatedly attacked on Indian armed
forces and establishments.
Modi government did not take these
offences timidly as Pakistan was used
to of the earlier Indian government’s
responses. Modi government responded
very strongly by carrying out surgical
strikes to give a befitting reply to Pakistanis

and more terror attacks, but Indian forces
are vigilant round the clock to thwart any
such misadventure from across the border.

which is not good for anyone. The ground
reality of Pakistan is very gloomy, the
common man in Pakistan is in dire straight
and people are already busy fighting their
own war of survival.
No country in the world can afford a war
in present scenario specially countries
like India and Pakistan, which are already
plagued with countless problems such as of
lack of basic infrastructure, jobs, corruption,
growing inflation & population to name
a few. Any possible conflict or war is only
going to add to these miseries, so the first
step to dilute this situation is to stop war
mongering with immediate effect. It only
requires some genuine efforts for peace
making from both sides. People from both
sides do not want any war at all.
Unfortunately, as both the countries are
sitting at the brink of a war, we need to
think about its consequences first as in
a war there are no winners. There is no
gain in a war, you only loose. Thousands
of innocent men, women and children
are killed for no valid reason. So, can we
not resolve this situation by dialogue to
avoid any possible war, despite all the
provocations and rhetoric.

D espite some low sales figures, the
median sales prices remain steady in
Auckland, according to the latest figures
from the Real Estate Institute of New
Zealand. Commercial property continues
to draw in first-time investors as the
market grows.
Here’s what you need to know:
Prices Still Flat Overall in August
The latest figures from the Real Estate
Institute of New Zealand have revealed
that the number of house sales last month
slumped to their lowest level for August
in five years – with 5959 residential
properties sold nationwide, the lowest
since August 2014. In Auckland, the
market was even quieter, with 1761
residential properties sold in August, the
lowest number for the month since 2010.
But Real Estate Institute of New Zealand
chief executive Bindi Norwell stated that
the expected winter lull was the major
contributor, but was still surprised by the
low figures, "This was a bit of a surprise
given the strength of July's figures,
however an extremely wet August across
most parts of the country and the past
three months having the lowest number

Cleaning up our rivers is a priority for us

N ew Zealand prides itself on our clean
green image. It’s part of our national
identity, and is essential for key industries
such as agriculture and tourism –
unfortunately however, decades of neglect
mean that many of our streams and rivers
are so polluted that they are unsafe for
people to swim or even wade in.
At the last election people sent a clear
message that they want action to clean up
our waterways. The government is getting
on with the job. This week, our Prime
Minister announced this Government’s
Action Plan for Healthy Waterways.
It has three main focusses. It is about
stopping the degradation of our rivers,

were flying off the shelves at a rate of
20,000 to 30,000 per day recently, so this
might be a fix for a couple of days at best.
The fact is, immunisation rates under

for its consistency. The failed Northland
Meningitis vaccination campaign which
saw schools fundraising for their own
vaccines, running out of flu vaccines in
May and now supply problems with the
measles vaccine.
Situations like this require real leadership.

J-K's cultural, religious Bengaluru: VV Puram food street

monuments on display by NMA to shun single-use plastic as part
of environment-friendly makeover
A khand (undivided) Kashmir's
cultural, religious and monumental
grandeur is on display from today by the
National Monument Authority (NMA) on
Tilak Marg here.
The exhibition is an attempt at
documenting the heritage of the Jammu
and Kashmir, now a Union territory,
which has been under a constant assault
due to its occupation by Pakistan.
Some of the featured sites are, 5000-year-
old Sharda Peeth which is an abandoned
temple, Shiva temple standing in ruins
in Mirpur Khas of Pakistan occupied
Kashmir (PoK). It was here that Alexander
fought with Porus in 323 BC. A large
number of Hindus lived here once, but
there are none today, an official stated
pointing towards a complete
demographic change.
Some other prominent sites
to have been kept on display
underlining India's territorial
claim substantiated by
existence of archaeological
sites. These are Raghunath
Temple, constructed by
first Dogra ruler Maharaja
Gulab Singh in 1835, Red
Fort (Muzaffarabad Fort,
Chal Fort), now in PoK, built
by Chal rulers of Kashmir in
16th century in the reign of
Sultan Muzaffar Khan of Bombay dynasty.
Ramkort Fort, built by Gokkhar name
Togle in 16-17th century AD and Buddha
Mujassama, a stone-carved image of
Buddha located in Gilgit Baltistan (PoK).
The list of protected sites and those in
PoK were also put on display.
The significance of the exhibition can be
gauged from the fact that the Narendra
Modi government had recently cleared
the abrogation of Article 370 paving way
for the state to be fully integrated into the
Indian Union.
This is also an attempt to showcase the
historic and cultural connection that
India has with the region still under illegal
occupation of Pakistan.
On the occasion of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi's 69th birthday, BJP
MP Tejasvi Surya on Tuesday stated
that Bengaluru's popular VV Puram
food street will be turned into a
plastic-free zone with dedicated slots
being reserved for pedestrians on
weekends.
Speaking to ANI, Bangalore South
constituency Surya acknowledged the
issues garbage disposal
and said, "VV Puram food
street is the pride of South
Bengaluru. This place
sadly had issues of garbage
disposal, use of single-
use plastic and hygiene
conditions. We have
decided to declare this a
plastic-free zone. There
will be no usage of single-
use plastic now."
He also announced that
dedicated slots will be
reserved at the food street
for pedestrians only.
"On weekends from 7 pm
to 11 pm, this VV Puram
food street will only be
for pedestrians. This an
attempt to reclaim the space for
pedestrians", he said.
Surya made these remarks after
visiting the food street on Tuesday
where he created awareness against
the usage of single-use plastic. He
also made everyone take a safety and
hygiene pledge to transform the food
street into an environment-friendly
destination.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited
his mother Heeraben Modi on Tuesday at
her residence to seek her blessings on the
occasion of his 69th birthday.
Modi's convoy arrived at his mother's
residence here in the afternoon as
supporters lined up outside the house to
catch a glimpse of their leader.
Adorable pictures from inside the
residence show the mother-son having
lunch together, enjoying what looks like a
Gujarati thali.
Before leaving, Modi took blessings of
his mother on his special day. The Prime
Minister had last visited Heeraben after

Modi is spending the day in his home
state of Gujarat, where he earlier visited
the Sardar Sarovar Dam and offered
prayers. He also participated in Namami

R afael Nadal won his fourth US Open
title by beating Russian Daniil
Medvedev in a five-set thriller - 7-5, 6-3,
5-7, 4-6, 6-4, at the Billie Jean King National
Tennis Centre in New York. The match that
lasted nearly five hours made Nadal 33,
the oldest winner at New York since 1970.
23 year old Medvedev, had never won a
five set match in his career since turning
professional four years ago. He came close
to reversing the trend, at his first major
finals appearance. World Tennis has been
dominated by Nadal, Federer and Serbian
Novak Djokovich for the past decade and
more. The trio have won the last 11 majors,
and 54 of 65 since the 2003 Wimbledon
(which was Federer’s first at London).
