K.S 3.1 Checkpoint 5.1 Cells and organisms Mr.

Gilbert

Is it alive?
In order to be characterized as “alive”, living organisms must have the
________________ characteristics.

It can be easy to tell if something is living or not. A teddy bear might look like a bear, but it cannot do
any of the seven things it needs to be able to do to count as being alive.

Identifying life

________________________________________________________ are all living organisms.

Animals are multicellular organisms – they consist of many cells that work together. Examples of
animals include mammals (such as humans) and insects (such as houseflies and mosquitoes).

Multicellular organisms are organised into increasingly complex parts. In order, from least complex to
most complex:

Animal cell structure

The main parts of an animal cell are the __________________________________________________.

Draw an animal cell

Animal cells:

The nucleus stores a set of instructions called genes, which ___________________________________.

The chemical reactions ( ________________ ) takes place in the ______________________.

The _________________________ controls what enters and leaves the cell. It lets
____________________________ in and waste products out.

Animal cells do not have:

_____________

_____________

_____________- so animals cannot carry out photosynthesis.

Specialized cells

Animals usually have specialized cells for different functions. Each type of cell is adapted to

carry out one life process.

Red blood cells – _____________ to the cells

_____________ – The muscle cells pull on bones that allows movement

Fat cells – Store energy for times when you can’t eat enough.

Bone cells – Rigid and hard cells.

Tissues

Animal cells and plant cells can form tissues, such as muscle tissue in animals. A living tissue is made
from a group of cells with a similar structure and function, which all work together to do a particular job.
Here are some examples of tissues:

• _____________
• the lining of the intestine
• the lining of the lungs
• xylem (tubes that carry water in a plant)

Organs

An organ is made from a group of different tissues, which all work together to do a particular job. Here
are some examples of organs:

Organ systems

An organ system is made from a group of different organs, which all work together to do a particular
job. Here are some examples of organ systems:

• circulatory system
• respiratory system
• digestive system
• nervous system
• reproductive system
• immune system
• muscular system
• excretory system
• skeletal system
