You may take your sit properly.

4. Review/Recall
Students, do you still remember what we
discussed yesterday? Yes, Ma’am.

Analyzing Word Problems involving Addition

What did we discuss?
and Subtraction

Let us solve this problem.

PROBLEM:
Sam bought a notebook which costs 13 pesos
and a pencil that costs 10 pesos. How much is
his change if he gave 50 pesos?
 The change Sam has after buying a
a. What is asked? notebook and a pencil.
 The given are the notebook which cost
b. What are given? 13 pesos and a pencil which cost 10
pesos.
c. What are the operations to be used?  The operation to be used are addition
and subtraction
d. What is the number sentence?  50-(13+10)=n
 Sam has 27 pesos change after he
e. What is the answer? bought a notebook and a pencil.

A. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

1. Motivation:
Before we go to our topic, I would like
you to watch a short video clip. Please pay
attention and understand the video clip
properly because I will ask some questions
after the video.
Are you ready? Yes Ma’am!

2. Presentation
Read carefully the paragraph written below.

Christine bought 8 pieces of chocolates. She

saw Justine feeling hungry. She bought again The student will read and analyze the
another 8 pieces of chocolates for Justine. paragraph.
How many chocolates did Christine buy in all?

3. Discussion Christine buys chocolates.

1. What did Christine buy?
The one who is feeling hungry was Justine.
2. Who is feeling hungry?
The number of chocolates did Christine buy in
3. What is asked in the problem? all.
The given are the 8 pieces of chocolate
4. What are the given?
bought by Christine for herself and another 8
pieces of chocolate she bought for Justine.
5. What are the values shows by Christine Christine shows the value of helping others
when she gave chocolates to Justine? and the value of being merciful.

For us to know the answer in this problem, we

will illustrate the given in what you called
repeated addition. It is another way of getting
the product of a problem. To show this:

a. We repetitively group and add the

same number again and again to find
the answer.
b. As multiplication is repeated addition,
each repeated addition can be written
in two ways:
 The repeated addition
(6+6+6=18)
 Multiplication sentence
(3x6=18)

In our problem, Christine bought 8 pieces of

chocolates and another 8 pieces of chocolates
for Justine. To illustrate this in repeated
addition, we will add 8 pieces of chocolate
twice.

Christine = 8 pieces
Justine = 8 pieces
Repeated Addition:
8 + 8 = 16
Multiplication sentence:
2x8=16

4. GROUP ACTIVITY

Now let’s have an activity. I will group you

into four. Each group will be given a problem
related to the topic then perform the given
directions. Are you ready? Yes Ma’am!
