Your journey ahead


A full-time 1-month course for Special effect and character makeup artists, taught by

Barney Nikolich, Emmy-nominated SFX makeup artist, is extremely intensive due to

the knowledge you’ll gain. It focuses on character development, with an emphasis on

the fundamental elements of prosthetic application and special make-up effects.

We will equip you with ideas for creative thinking and product knowledge for fast

solutions, to be able to make an impact with limited resources. You will gain skills to

be able to work with confidence and success.

The teaching is based on detailed, step-by-step demonstrations with lectures and

hands-on learning with the opportunity to produce, cast, apply and colour a transfer

appliance.

If you’ve got commitment, we’ll help with the rest. You’ll have access to expert tutors,

create work, get personal feedback, collaborate with a network of creatives, get the

insider’s insight and learn the career skills needed to break out into one of the most

demanding creative industries to work in.


Our classroom is a place where you will be able to watch hours of 9 / 20

demonstrations, listen to theory around essential topics, take part

in discussions, ask questions, get feedback, give feedback, connect

with others and build your portfolio. Each week, for the whole

month, you’ll get:

•Hours of demonstration and theory knowledge. You’ll see

expert tutors at work, discuss career opportunities and learn from

•A lot of time for hands-on experiences. You will learn trough

set projects and exercises, get the insight into how to respond to

real industry briefs, how to understand set terminology, collaborate

with other creatives, create portfolio and work on your career

development.

•Time for Q&As. Interaction. Discussion. Ask me anything

sessions where you’ll get answers to the questions you’ve always

wanted to ask. Together we’ll review your work and find ways for

improvement. We’ll help you to understand the profession from all

the different perspectives so you’ll get the insight into how to really

succeed as a special effect makeup artist.

Traditional old age special effect


techniques
In order to create realistic simulated effects it is essential to understand the anatomy of

character and special effect makeup. Mastering the traditional SFX makeup techniques

will equip you with skills that will enable you to work with confidence and success.

• Your learning will start with ageing unit in order to be able to define highlight and

shadow on the advanced level and be able to apply those concepts in a film and

television situation. You will be able to light and shade the basic shapes and define the

terms associated with the process

• Traditional creation of wrinkles on the human face, age spots and vein work to

enhance and complete the aging process using stretch and stipple techniques are

going to be covered as well as hair whitening and greying.

• At the end of this unit you will be able to create and complete an “old age” character

make-up, bringing together all of the techniques learned in class so far

Hair and beard unit


Learn hair laying for special effects and prosthetics and

discover the secrets for creating ultra-realistic character

hairwork on a budget.

• You will learn to select the right hair for the job,

blending color & texture techniques, application

with mapping direction on the makeup,

controlling density and get some serious cutting &

styling tips.

• For a character makeup artist the use of hair pieces

and the knowledge on how to ventilate them is a

must. Your learning will therefore continue in this

direction. You will be able to ventilate and apply a

hair piece with all blending tips and tricks.

“Out-of-the-Kit” character makeup


Most of the time you will have to create effective “Out-of-the-Kit” character
makeups using generic prosthetics and a range of standard makeup supplies.

• Bald cap application with understanding of different materials and types.


You will be able to choose the best option suited for a given project and
understand the strengths and weaknesses of each of the different types of
caps available.

• The unit will continue with airbrush makeup - layers of color, vein work,
highlight & shadow

• You will be able to create and apply realistic temporary tattoos.

• You will be introduced to the use of generic prosthetics with aplication,


blending and colouring techniques and get the insight into following
teachings.

Injury makeup FX
You’ll start by learning to sculpt, construct a small facial prosthetic and finish with

knowledge on techniques and processes in creation of authentic wounds and injuries, e.g.

cuts, burns, scars, bruises, blisters, bullet wounds, and stab wounds through constructing

the differing types of flat molds.

• You will advanced your stippling skills, learn to create two-dimensional scrapes and

scratches and apply indented scars and raised keloid scars.

• You will be able to create cuts and lacerations using a silicone compound.

• Wax bullet holes, both entrance and exit wounds, using latex and gelatin prosthetic

appliances to create an injured appearance will help you to slowly start to understand the

use of prostatetic makeup.

• You will be able to create a first, second and third degree burns; as well as, put them

together for a gruesome look.

• At the end of this unit ice and snow effects will be covered.

Prosthetic unit
Beside using generic prosthetics and a range of standard makeup supplies, this unit
will give you a solid knowledge on designing the prosthetic.

• We will focus on life casting, basic sculpting, breaking down the sculpture, mould-
making, casting and painting the appliances, and on the final prosthetic application.

• We’ll dive deeper with a demonstration of a full-face cast in silicone, techniques for
casting and correcting positives, flat moulds and 3D transfer moulding processes.

• You will learn the techniques of running silicones encapsulated with Super Baldiez,
and techniques for pre-painting and finishing appliances with traditional application
and colouring processes.

• You will create silicone gel-filled appliances, gelatine appliances and pros-aide
transfer appliances, you will learn and practice the art of application, utilising
proper placement, coloration and blending to create realistic prosthetic makeup
creations.

character makeup and effects. Benefit from creating your
own original character, combining all your talents to bring a
character brief into being. Your learning will be packed with
practical activities that will equip you with the skills needed
to continue transforming actors into characters. The course

The last unit is moulded around your own conceptual design


in order to complete a character for your portfolio.

This will be your chance to show up and expand your

Throughout the whole months of your programme you’ll be assessed in practical


assignments and projects, to learn how to be able to respond to real industry briefs.

You’ll gain insight into what it takes to be a Special effect Makeup Artist, how to
make your ultimate breakthrough, how to develop ideas and keep yourself inspired
and how to find your own style. We will challenge you in different areas, so you’ll
