CLOUD COMPUTING TECHNIQUES FOR

NETWORKED CONTROL SYSTEMS

Networked Control System (NCS) is a system in which the traditional control loops are
closed through a communication network such that the signals of the system (control signals
and feedback signals) can be exchanged among all components (sensors, controllers and
actuators) through a common network. NCS allows remote monitoring and adjustment of plants
over the communication channel. In comparison with traditional control systems, NCS has
several advantages including: less wiring, lower cost, and more flexibility and maintainability
of the system. As a result, NCS has been widely used in industrial control, process control,
engineering systems, aerospace systems, intelligent systems, microgrids and teleoperations.
However, it turns out that the inclusion of networks in dynamical systems introduces new
challenges to the overall system due to the appearance of imperfections. These include
quantisation errors, varying delays, dropouts, variable sampling intervals, variable
transmission delays and communication constraints. The imperfections essentially affect the
behaviour of the NCS by degrading the performance or causing instability. Modelling and
controlling NCS taking into consideration all the imperfections is indeed a challenging task.
Cloud computing is one of the essential tools in industry since it provides customers
with high computation power and it reduces requirements of storage. And this opens new
windows to the control techniques. The cloud control system combines the merit of cloud
computing and advanced theory of NCSs. In cloud control systems, the huge data from all
kinds of sensors will be sent out to the central of cloud computing. After the data is processed,
the control schemes will be instantly provided for cloud control systems. Cloud control systems
will provide powerful tools to control the complex systems which we could not have imagined
before.
The objective of the research is to develop a control algorithm for a cloud based non-
linear multi agent Networked Control System with uncertain time varying network induced
delay, packet dropouts, variable sampling intervals, variable transmission delays and
communication constraints.
