Summary of “Role of Chemical Alternative Energy to Maintain the

Sustainability of Energy”
Section 1 :

Chemistry for a sustainability energy future by Prof. Dr. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA

There are the major issues of energy

1. Dependency on fossil fuels and oil import

2. Global climate change and it impacts
3. Limited fossil reserves and energy security
4. Food-energy-water-nexus
5. Circular economy

Indonesia is a country with stable economic growth. Indonesia is a net oil importer and the largest
coal exporter. Indonesia has an immense renewable energy potential but not been used widely. As an
example problem of Indonesia is energy infrastructure and complex logistics.

The impacts of climate change are tsunamis, uninhabitable, earth hotter than past, glacier will be
melting, food shortages, island is under water, rare species extinct, war can happened, increased
earthquakes, famine, and extreme weather events.

Climate change also gives a relation between energy food and water influence. Food will be
increased demand 50% by 2030 (FAO), water will be increased demand 30% by 2030 (IFPRI), and
energy will be increased demand 50% by 2030 (IEA). The additional impacts are society, economy, and
also environment.

Circular economy divided by 5 steps, first of all is design/manufacture, then retailer,

consumer/householder, after that re-use/repair, finally is recycling sector.

Norway, Sweden, United States, Cananda, Switzerland, New Zealand, France, Finland, United
Kingdom, Denmark are the higher nation who has the best energy security with the range about 0,764
until 0,841, but Indonesia has a really small energy security than them. Indonesia only has 0,475 point.

Sustainability energy is energy that meets the needs of the present generations without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Role of chemistry in energy and sustainability are:

1. Chemical sciences can provide energy that is secure, affordable, and sustainable.
2. Chemical sciences have a role to develop low emission, efficient energy, energy storage,
and chemicals from waste to understanding the potential impacts of different energy
options.
3. Chemistry solutions by advances across engineering, biology, and environmental
sciences.
Challenge for chemistry science are :

1. Controlling materials in ultra-small (Nano) and ultra-fast

2. Developing next generation of solar cells and efficient grade of solar cells
3. Improving the performance of energy conversion and storage level
4. Green chemistry

Section 2 :

Demonstration of B10 blend fuel on light duty diesel vehicles in Korea by Youngmin Woo, Ph.D.

Biodiesel is a methyl ester derived from a wide range of feedstock. Also biodiesel is a trans-
esterification. Biodiesel will not add the rate of CO2. Biodiesel can be accepted to diesel engine caused by
cetane number of biodiesel is about 48-65 which is higher than diesel with 40-55 point. The result of
machine combustion is a bit (PM factor). The problem of biodiesel (palm oil) is sticky when the season is
winter, and the problem of biodiesel (soybean) is too expensive.

Biodiesel promotion in Korea:

1. In May 2002, MOTIE (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) launched BD20.
2. Taxes for automotive fuel are composed of traffic-energy-environment tax, education tax,
and 10% of VAT (Value Added Tax) for final price.
3. This tax immunity policy for biodiesel was terminated which means same tax rate for
diesel oil has been imposed on biodiesel.
4. To increase domestic feedstock (imported soybean, waste cooking oil, imported palm
oil), MOF (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) conducted demo-plantation program.
5. There are 15 biodiesel production companies in Korea and the total production is over 1
million tons per year.

Conclusion of demonstration of B10 Biodiesel Blend in Korea:

1. B10 fuel is successful completion of more than 60.000 km driving distance.

2. Effect of biodiesel on emissions and fuel consumption didn’t show significant.
3. B10 showed 5.4% less Nano-particle than diesel in emission.

From this seminar, I could conclude that we can know more about the situation of issues in the
world and of course in Indonesia. We also can know about our role for sustainability energy. This seminar
told us about the circumstance of Korea on the Biodiesel. Hopeful I can always remember my role and
my challenges for the future and solve it with collaboration from another perception.
