Using Picture Hangman – Created by Roger Cookson

Introduction
This document is comprised of a set of notes about how to use the interactive
Microsoft PowerPoint resource called Picture Hangman and also an embedded
compressed file containing the resource files needed to use it.

The resource was created in Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 and uses macros. For the
program to work the macros need to be enabled. It may work with newer versions
of Microsoft PowerPoint e.g. 2007 but is less likely to work with older versions of
Microsoft PowerPoint. If you have any feedback on these notes or the resource
then please e-mail roger.cookson@stokecoll.ac.uk

Instructions
Follow these instructions to understand how to extract and use Picture Hangman.
You may find it useful to print out a copy.

Picture Hangman.zip

1. Double click on this Picture Hangman.zip icon. The following message will
probably be displayed (Figure 1).

Figure 1

2. Click the Yes button. The program that deals with zip files will be displayed
(Figure 2). The files need to be extracted and details of how to do this will
depend on what program your computer uses for extracting files. Steps 3 to 6
explain how to use the Windows XP zip facility. Skip to Step 7 when the files
have been extracted if you are using another zip program.

Setting up a Game
The game is customisable through the addition of image and sound files. Needless
to say you need to be mindful of copyright restrictions if you choose to use other
people's image or sound files.

Pictures
In a suitable folder e.g. in a Pictures folder in the Picture Hangman folder add
the pictures/cartoon image files you wish to use for the game and rename each
file to the word/phrase you want them to guess (Figure 10).

Figure 10
Please note - only the following image file types can be used:
BMP, GIF, JPG, TIF AND WMF

Image files can either be created using a digital camera or downloaded from a
suitable electronic source
e.g. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/clipart/default.aspx

45305676.doc 6
Sounds
When a guess is made the computer can play a sound to indicate whether or not
the guess is correct. You can add your own sound file/s for either option to give
appropriate responses to the guesses. Each time a guess is made a random sound
file is played from the appropriate folder.

Please note – because we are unable to save MP3 and WMA files to the our
college network sound files for use with Picture Hangman have to be in WAV
format.

Within the Picture Hangman folder are two subfolders called Correct and Wrong.
Add sounds for correct guesses to the Correct subfolder and for incorrect guesses
to the Wrong subfolder.

Figure 11

Sound files can be created using a digital recorder or downloaded from a suitable
source e.g. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/clipart/default.aspx

Running the Program - Changing Security Settings
The program will only work if Macros have been enabled. By default PowerPoint
2003 is set to have High security, which prevents macros from running (some
people create malicious macros that can cause problems!). Change the security
settings to Medium as detailed below.
10. Load up Microsoft PowerPoint - if you cannot see a suitable icon then use the
Run command - hold down the Windows key (between Ctrl and Alt) and press
the R key then type PowerPnt (please note this is spelt correctly) and press
Enter (Figure 12)

Figure 12

11. When PowerPoint has loaded click on the Tools menu, select Macro and
Security (Figure 13).

Figure 13

12. Select Medium from the Security dialogue box and click the OK button.

Guessing Letters
19. To guess a letter use either the mouse or interactive whiteboard to select the
appropriate letter.

45305676.doc 11
If the letter is in the word then one of the Correct sounds will be played and the
letter will be displayed.

Figure 21
If the letter guessed is not in the word/phrase then a Wrong sound will be played
and the lives will be reduced by 1.

Guessing a Whole Word/Phrase

20. To guess the whole word/phrase click the Type Guess button and input the
guess using the keyboard (Figure 22).

Figure 22
Again if the guess is wrong another 'life' is lost.

45305676.doc 12
If a word/phrase is correctly guessed a congratulations message will be displayed
(Figure 23) and if the image is not already visible it will be displayed.

Figure 23
Moving on to the Next Word/Phrase
