Structural health monitoring (SHM) can be characterized
as the integration of sensing and intelligence to enable
the potential damage to be monitored, analyzed,
localized, and predicted in real time and in a
nondestructive manner. Over the past two decades,
extensive research has demonstrated that fiber-optic
sensors (FOSs) are well suited for SHM sensing
requirements in infrastructure systems. In this book, a
brief overview of SHM and the application of FOS are
presented. The book focuses on advanced techniques

structural parameters including structural deflections, dynamic
characteristics, damages, and loads. Also presented is a
three-level method of structural performance evaluation
that utilizes monitoring data and identified results. This
volume consists of 3 extensive Chapters with the
following contents.

• Chapter 1 provides a thorough overview of Structural
Identification and damage detection based on macro-
strain measurements. Framework of structural
identification using area-wise distributed sensing data
is discussed. Rotation and deflection identification
and all corresponding and associated techniques -the
building blocks of the area-wise sensing-, are
subsequently introduced and discussed. Other topics
and concepts introduced in this chapter include strain
modal analysis theory, neutral axis height
identification, practical approaches for structural
damage detection and load identification, finite
element model updating methods, are among the
important and relevant topics that are presented and
elaborated in this chapter.
• Chapter 2 is devoted to discussing area distributed
monitoring-based structural performance evaluation.
SHM-based performance is discussed in this chapter
and the corresponding safety evaluation methods for
bridges and large structures are discussed.
Application of the methodology and the theoretical
background of area distributed sensing in SHM are
also introduced and discussed in this chapter and a
three-level performance-based evaluation
incorporating area distributed monitoring is presented.
This chapter discusses numerous topics that are
important in field application of the proposed SHM
strategy with practical applications.
• Chapter 3 is dedicated to concluding remarks and
suggestions for future work. This chapter is an in-
depth summary of the two volumes. Authors provide
an in-depth assessment of the state of the art in SHM
technologies, especially as related to fiber optic
sensors and the challenges facing the future of
structural health monitoring if infrastructure and
groups of civil engineering systems.

This two volume book is a good resource for

understanding the critical topics, challenges and
emerging trends in SHM. The focus on the application of
fiber optic sensing and introducing the novel approach of
area-wise sensing makes this collection a valuable
source directly related to practical applications. These
two volumes can be adopted both as a reference, as well
as text books, for an advanced course in structural health
monitoring.
