This directory contains contact details of Editorial clients who commission illustration. It is an
affordable and manageable resource for illustrators seeking commissions in the UK market.
We’ve made every effort to check that the details are up to date - but commissioner staff changes
mean that there will inevitably be inaccuracies.
If you do find the information is not right please let us know so we can update the records by
emailing info@theaoi.com.
Contacting Commissioners
You should always make sure that you are approaching the commissioners who are right for your
work. Take time to research their current work, spend time in the library reviewing the publications
and follow the publication/art director on social media. Not everyone in this directory will be
appropriate for you to contact.
Smaller trade magazines can be a good route into the industry and can add to your portfolio of
published work. If you email commissioners, try to avoid doing this over the summer or close to
Christmas where holidays and parties are natural distractions. January can be a good time to
contact commissioners, as is March / April which often coincides with the new financial year for
many companies.
Delivering Commissions
Magazines and newspapers have different lead in times depending on whether they are daily,
weekly or monthly. If you are approaching newspapers note that you may be required to produce
artwork over a short timescale (sometimes in less than 24 hours).
If you have any queries on the process or the contract, you can always contact the AOI – members
have access to our membership helpline where we assist with these questions on a daily basis.
