Technology’s name: Digital Watermark

Introduced by: Andrew Tirkel and Charles Osborne

Date introduced: 1992

Date popular: //when was the tech became popular//

Purpose and Contribution:

After new technologies of digitizing information were developed, a huge amount of databases of texts,
images, scientific data, video, audio files and other digital information had been appeared in the world.
With developing network and internet technologies and connecting computers into the World Wide Web,
databases became available not only for authorized access but for illegal access also. Much more digital
data can be accessed via network nowadays. This possibility for digital attacks such as forgery, stealing,
copying, and altering the digital data has led to the need to protect ownership of digital information or
digital media (image, text, video, audio, PDF, etc.), data tempering, and data integrity. And thus,
developed the Digital Watermarking. I t is a modern technology of hiding of a visible or secret message
or information (watermark) within an ordinary message (host). Watermarking is an effective mechanism
to address the problem and safeguard the digital contents that is created by the proliferation of digital
information. A watermark is a name or logo stamped in the makeup of a document. Traditional
watermarks have been used for years on letterhead or checks to prove authenticity. It becomes a
permanent part of the content. For example, artists can copyright their work by hiding their name within
the image. Digital watermark (DWM) is the electronic version of the traditional one. When digital
watermarks are used for intellectual property protection, many e-governance and e-commerce
applications are beneficial and they include the online and offline distribution of multimedia content,
broadcast services, document verification, ownership identification and so on. This also benefits content
creators – artists, authors, and movie studios; content providers – photo stock archives, libraries, and
professional photographers; electronic commerce and graphics software vendors; and manufacturers of
digital still images, video cameras and digital video discs (DVDs). Numerous electronic business web sites
are found in the Internet which contains all types of data, i.e. text, graphics, audio, video etc as well as
they are typical e-governance and electronic commerce applications. All these sites need intellectual
property protection. The type of the web site together with the media data types and types of digital
contents decides the type of watermark used in that application for the site security.
