ABSTRACT

This research aims to give knowledge about the

Effects of Alcoholism to the Female Grade 12 students of

Bp. Pueblos Senior High School. The study is conducted

among women in order to know how women may be different

when they tend to drink alcohol beverages if accordingly

there is a contrast with that among men, since alcohol

consumption in our society has a difference among variety

of status variables, such as in any individual’s gender.

In this research, two participants in each academic

strand having eight in total were selected to participate

by purposive random sampling. The data are gathered by

using in-depth interviews to the participants. Using

descriptive-analytic method, the researchers were able to

give complete description and analysis about the effects

of alcoholism to the female students.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Alcohol consumption in our society has a difference

among variety of status variables, such as in any

individual’s sex, age, ethnicity and many other. The sex,

however, is the strongest variable that predicts the

difference among its two types which are the female and

male individuals; when it comes to their purpose and

meaning of drinking and their attitude in accepting

drunkenness.

Women tend to drink slowly, drink with family

members or at parties or on special occasions, and drink

to celebrate events and dates (Becker & Kronus, 1977).

This style of drinking suggests that drinking is a social

ritual for women, serving to allow women to celebrate and

solidify their bonds with others, and to reinforce and

maintain their social roles (Becker & Kronus, 1977;

Ullman, 1962). In contrast, males drink to denigrate,

2

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

deny, or weaken bonds with others, and to violate rules

and roles.

There are many motivations that influence an

individual especially a young adult’s decision to consume

alcohol. According to Sheehan and Ridge (2001), a study

of young students found that the motivations behind binge

drinking for females in particular included socializing

and exploration.

The researchers will conduct this study to assess

the effects of alcoholism to the female Grade 12 students

of Bp. Pueblos Senior High according to the factors that

motivates them to drink. This will help the parents,

teachers and peers to be aware about the drinking

activities engaged by the female students and will have

an idea to set limits with regards of this habit.

3. What are the possible solutions to lessen alcoholism?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant to the following:

Students. They will be able to expand their

knowledge about the effects of alcoholism. This study may

help them to be aware and be more careful on their

environment that may serve as the huge factor for them to

drink alcohol beverages.

Parents. They will be able to guide their children

and preclude them to engage with alcoholism. Alcoholism

may bring negative effects to their child, if they will

be able to know the effects of alcoholism and engagement

of this behavior, this study may help the parents have an

idea how to discipline their child.

Teachers. They will be able to enlighten the

students and educate them about the effects alcoholism

5

may bring. This study aids the teachers’ strategy to

educate their students and help them how to cope up with

the difficulties they encounter within the school in

result of the engagement of alcoholism.

School Administrators. They will be able to provide

solutions and ways to lessen the problem of the students’

drinking habits. They may conduct seminars and symposiums

among their students within the school which tackles

about alcoholism that will educate them and will bring

awareness.

Future Researchers. They will be able to deliberate

and point out the needed information in the study’s case.

This study may aid them in gathering data relating to the

topic and may have broad opinions and information based

on the data presented on this study.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses on assessing the effects of

female students’ engagement on alcoholism. It limits to

the female Grade 12 students of Father Saturnino Urios

Theoretical Framework

This study is affixed with Albert Bandura’s Social

Learning Theory that explains human behavior in terms of

continuous reciprocal interaction between cognitive,

behavioral, and environmental influences.

8

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

According to Bandura (1977), most human behavior is

learned observationally through modeling: from observing

others one forms an idea of how new behaviors are

performed, and on later occasions this coded information

serves as a guide for action. As people have the ability

to learn by simply watching others. First, an individual

pays sufficient attention for a successful learning.

Second, the observed information should be stored to be

used at a later date which is crucial in the

observational learning process. Third, the observed

behaviors are reproduced and practiced. Lastly, in

adapting to the behavior, an individual must be motivated

in repeating the learned behavior. Certain activities may

be adapted by an individual into his/her behavior. The

influence of engaging alcoholism may revolve around this

concept of social learning theory. One of the factors

that encourages an individual to drink alcohol is because

of his/her observation and learning from family, friends,

the media, and direct experiences. The idea of engaging

alcoholism because of an individual’s social environment

is supported by the Social Learning Theory, that the

observed behaviors performed in an environment can be

imitated by an individual to start new things.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Alcoholism

Among teenagers, there are likely to be many times

when they feel a certain amount of pressure to drink

alcohol. It may be that all of their friends are doing it

and they seem to be having a good time. Or it may be that

they simply do not want to be left out at the parties and

social gatherings they attend that increasingly seem to

revolve around drinking. For many teenagers, getting

involved with alcohol is simply part of growing up, but

12

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

for others, it can quickly become a serious problem.

There are number of factors that make it more likely for

teenagers to develop problems with alcohol or even

progress into full-blown alcoholism. The more aware you

are of these factors, the better your chances of avoiding

problems both during your teen years and later in life

(Teen Problems with Alcoholism, 2018).

According to Murray (2018), alcoholism is an

increasing problem for women. In general, women are more

prone to alcoholism compared to men based on their body

compositions. Because women tend to weigh less than men

and alcohol remains in body water, an average woman can

consume the same amount of alcohol as an average man but

be impacted for more. As a result, female drinkers tend

to experience adverse effects and develop alcohol-related

addictions more quickly than their male counterparts.

Additionally, changing social mores are making it more

acceptable, and in many cases actively encouraging, women

of all ages to drink.

Moreover, Bolyn M. (2017) states that the teenage

years are a time when young people try to form an

13

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

identity and fit in with their peers. They’re usually

under pressure to perform at school and at sports.

Getting into college is competitive and many teens are

afraid of disappointing their parents or disappointing

themselves. They may be experiencing problems at home,

with their friends or in romantic relationships.

Teenagers are more impulsive than adults and sometimes

act before considering the consequences. These are some

of the factors that influence teenagers to abuse alcohol.

According to Slade T. et al. (2016), if any one of

us were to attend a social event today, we would expect

women to be as likely to be drinking as men—and even

excessive drinking among females would be unlikely to

attract attention. This is hardly surprising given the

rapid social and economic changes of the past 100 years.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism

(2008) stated that women appear to be more vulnerable

than men to many adverse consequences of alcohol use.

Women achieve higher concentrations of alcohol in the

blood and become more impaired than men after drinking

equivalent amounts of alcohol. Research also suggests

14

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

that women are more susceptible than men to alcohol-

related organ damage and to trauma resulting from traffic

crashes and interpersonal violence.

The study of Alcohol Alert (2009) also explains that

each year, approximately 5,000 young people under the age

of 21 die as a result of underage drinking; this includes

about 1,900 deaths from motor vehicle crashes, 1,600 as a

result of homicides, 300 from suicide, as well as

hundreds from other injuries such as falls, burns, and

drownings. Yet drinking continues to be widespread among

adolescents, as shown by nationwide surveys as well as

studies in smaller populations. An annual survey of U.S.

youth, three-fourths of 12th graders, more than two-

thirds of 10th graders, and about two in every five 8th

graders have consumed alcohol. And when youth drink they

tend to drink intensively, often consuming four to five

drinks at one time. MTF data show that 11 percent of 8th

graders, 22 percent of 10th graders, and 29 percent of

12th graders had engaged in heavy episodic or binge

drinking within the past two weeks. The National

Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA] defines

15

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

binge drinking as a pattern of drinking alcohol that

brings blood alcohol concentration to a high amount. For

the typical adult, this pattern corresponds to consuming

five or more drinks for men, or four or more drinks for

women in about 2 hours. Research also shows that many

adolescents start to drink at very young ages. In 2003,

the average age of first use of alcohol was about 14,

compared to about 17 1/2 in 1965. People who reported

starting to drink before the age of 15 were four times

more likely to also report meeting the criteria for

alcohol dependence at some point in their lives. In fact,

new research shows that the serious drinking problems

(including what is called alcoholism) typically

associated with middle age actually begin to appear much

earlier, during young adulthood and even adolescence.

There are several explanations about the different

factors that encourage teenagers nowadays to engage with

alcoholism or binge drinking. The result of the study

conducted by The International Centre for Alcohol

Policies concludes that among various groups around the

world who engage with this activity, the main motivation

16

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

behind binge drinking behavior for young people are as

follows: it being a social and leisure activity; it is

normally done at celebrations or at the end of the week;

it is a chance to explore adult behaviors; it helps cope

with problems; it is associated with increased freedoms

and it facilitates peer relations (Leigh B. & Lee. 2008).

Yet, the central motivation was always because ‘drinking

is fun’ (p. 58).

Other research shows that the younger children and

adolescents are when they start to drink, the more likely

they will be to engage in behaviors that harm themselves

and others. For example, frequent binge drinkers that is

nearly 1 million high school students nationwide are more

likely to engage in risky behaviors, including using

other drugs such as marijuana and cocaine, having sex

with six or more partners, and earning grades mostly

lower that the passing grade. On a one national survey,

one in four eighth graders reports drinking alcohol

within the past month and 18% of eighth graders have

gotten drunk at least once in the past year (Make a

Difference: Talk to Your Child about Alcohol, Rockville,

17

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

MD, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism,

2000). Also, in a recent survey from the Substance Abuse

and Mental Health Service’s National Household Survey on

Drug Use and Health reported that about 28% of young

people between the ages of 12 and 20 said that they had

had a drink in the last month, more than 18% of young

people in that age group said that they were binge

drinkers, meaning they had five or more drinks in one

sitting, and 6% said that they were heavy drinkers (Who’s

Using Alcohol. Family Guide, Keeping Youth Mentally

Healthy & Drug Free. U.S. Department of Health and Human

Services. 2007). While many people may think that

drinking is less serious than drug use, that is not the

case. Alcohol is a depressant, which means that it slows

body functions, including heartbeat, breathing, and

thinking. Drinking alcoholic beverages can also have

other effects on the body. (Alcohol and the Brain.

Neuroscience for Kids. Eric H. Chudler. 1996-2007; The

Cool Spot).

Alcohol consumption is widespread among teens and

there are various factors that influence them to consume

18

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

it. According to the American Academy of Child and

Adolescent Psychiatry (2006), teenagers who have family

members with a history of substance abuse are at risk for

alcohol and drug abuse. If teens have grown up in a

household where one or both parents abuse alcohol, it

might seem normal or an acceptable behavior to them. They

also have more access to alcohol if their parents are

drinking. Of course, the opposite can occur. A teen can

also be hurt and disgusted by his/her parents’ alcohol

abuse, and refuse to follow that path.

Alcoholism especially on women among different

countries has become a worrying trend; drinking more, and

more often than past generations. It is already shown in

numbers, the impact of the change in drinking patterns.

According to the World Health Organization’s Global

status report on alcohol and health in 2014, 33.1% or one

third of Irish women had engaged in excessive drinking in

the previous month. The Health Research Board’s National

Alcohol Diary Survey found that half (51.4%) of females

started drinking alcohol before the age of 18 years,

22.8% or over one-fifth of female drinkers drank more

19

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

than the HSE’s recommended low-risk weekly drinking

guidelines consumed alcohol in the week prior to the

survey, 39% of young women ages 18 to 24 years old was

the highest in this measure, wine was the most common

type of alcohol consumed by women aged over 25 years

(58.9%) and spirits were the most common type of alcohol

consumed by aged 18 to 24 years (59.9%). Also, the Health

Research Board found that 24.1% or one-in-four women

experienced harm as a result of their own alcohol use

while 15.6% of women reported experiencing harm as a

result of someone else’s alcohol use. (Women and Alcohol,

n.d.)

According to Redmond J. (n.d), the cause of

alcoholism in women are varied, and this is a complex

issue to understand. Women may begin drinking to excess

due to stress, a history of sexual abuse or because of

depression or anxiety. Genetics and environment factors

also play a part in whether women become alcoholics.

There are number of reasons why women drink alcohol.

Some of these reasons place women at a higher risk pf

developing alcohol use disorder. They include the

20

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

following: Teenage girl may drink to have fun or to

relieve stress. Women that are also survivors of sexual

abuse are more likely to be problem drinkers. Alcohol is

sometimes used to numb painful feelings or thoughts. Some

women also drink alcohol to manage the stress. Women face

a lot of stress and some use of alcohol to relax. (Women

and Alcohol Abuse, n.d)

Women enjoy drinking a little bit of alcohol as much

as anyone else. They may want to celebrate something,

simply feel a bit more sociable or have a drink to unwind

at the end of a long day. The vast majority of women who

drink responsibly, but have some bigger chance of

developing alcoholism. Additionally, alcohol affects

women in different ways. Women usually develop the

diseases and other harmful effects caused by alcohol much

sooner than what a man does, and by drinking less

alcohol. Furthermore, it is known that women are more

likely to use alcohol and other substances to self-

medicate when they experience emotional difficulties such

as stress, anxiety and depression. (Alcoholism in Women,

n.d.).
21

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

The differences between genders regarding problem

drinking standards is typically attributed to differences

in height, weight, body co1mposition (women have more

body fat while men have more water weight), and hormones.

However, research has also shown that women also begin

experiencing problems like health issues, mood changes,

and behavioral changes in relation to alcohol use faster

than men do, and typically develop addiction to alcohol

more quickly than men do.

For years, researchers have warned that more and

more women are drinking. And it’s not just a spike in the

number of women abusing alcohol. Today, women are

drinking a significantly higher volume of alcohol. Yes,

many women can now drink men under the table. The reasons

for this increase must be both societal and personal and

involve such diverse factors as increased pressure on

families, peer pressure, curiosity and as well as traumas

such as relationship break-up, bereavement or it could

also be redundancy. According to research studies that,

women are more likely to drink if they have family

members who are alcohol dependent, if they have a history

of clinical depression, and have an ability to drink more

alcohol than othe

Chapter 5

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings,

conclusions and recommendations based on the data

analyzed in the previous chapter.

Summary

This research is focused to the effects of

alcoholism to the female Grade 12 students of Bp. Pueblos

Senior High School. It aims to seek the answers of the

statements of the problem which include: how the factors

Socializing and Exploration affect the Grade 12 female

students’ choice to engage with alcoholism; how do

alcoholism affect the female students in the areas of

their Physical Aspect, Health, and Academic Performance;

and what are the possible solutions to lessen alcoholism.

The study is supported by the Social Learning Theory of

44

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

Albert Bandura which explained that the observed

behaviors performed in an environment can be imitated by

an individual to start new things. The integral

components in this study are the effects of alcoholism to

the female students and the participants of the study

which are the Grade 12 students of BP. Pueblos Senior

High from sections St. Dominic for the strand STEM, St.

Agnes of Rome for the strand GAS, St. Benedict of Nursia

for the strand ABM and St. Francis de Sales for the HUMSS

strand and each section have two participants. By using

the content analysis to analyze the gathered data, there

are effects that are experienced by the students in all

different aspects and areas but there are also students

who do not find any effects to some of the provided

areas.

Findings

The result of the study revealed that:

The female Grade 12 students of Bp. Pueblos Senior

High School who drink alcohol beverages experience

45

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

different effects in different aspects and areas. In

terms of socializing, all of the participants have agreed

to engage with alcoholism with people for fun and bond.

Majority of the participants also have declared that they

are in a state of curiosity, which is why they drink

alcohol beverages for them to have experiences and try

new things. And when it comes to their physical and

health aspect, half have find changes to themselves due

to alcoholism and half have also stated there are none.

And with regards to academics, alcoholism does not

significantly affect their performance since majority

have stated that they never had poor performance in

school because of their habit. The provided solutions

according to their own perspectives include discipline,

self-control, setting limits and diverting attention.

Conclusions

On the basis of the provided results from the

gathered data of this study, the following conclusions

were drawn:
46

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

The factors such as socializing exploration affect

the Grade 12 female students’ choice to engage with

alcoholism.

When it comes to Socializing, students are more open

and enjoyed when they are to drink with people that is

why they prefer to drink with their friends, not just

because for fun but also to strengthen their bond.

In Exploration, students are also curious about what

alcoholism may bring. Which is why they try to enter the

world of alcoholism engagement.

Alcoholism also affect most of the female students

in the areas of their Physical Aspect, Health and

Academic Performance, though it cannot be concluded

severely as it may be. The effects can only be determined

depending on how the students handle their control and

how often they are to engage with this habit.

The possible solutions to lessen alcoholism

according to the majority of the students are discipline,

self-control, setting limits and diverting attention.

Recommendations
47

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

On the basis of the mentioned findings and

conclusions, the researchers humbly offer these

recommendations to the following:

Students. They should be able to know how to control and

discipline themselves when it comes to their drinking

habit. Their responsibility as students and as teenagers

should be balanced with their engagement with alcoholism.

Students should also be responsible when it comes to

choosing their peers.

Parents. They should always monitor their children on the

activities they are involved in. Parents should always

know what their children are up to. If known that their

child is under the influence of too much alcohol, they

should not tolerate them but rather discipline them.

Teachers. They should include to their teachings the

proper ways of behaving as teenagers. Teachers must be

able to understand their students and help them by

guiding them and monitoring them in school. Teachers must

also be good at giving advices to help students become

more enlightened.
48

FATHER SATURNINO URIOS UNIVERSITY

B.P PUEBLOS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
BUTUAN CITY

School Administrators. They should conduct seminars or

symposiums in their school for the students to have more

knowledge about alcoholism and be aware about the effects

it may bring. They should also nurture the students and

help them preserve their talents and skills by giving

relevant activities to them that can avoid the students

to have much time for fun by drinking alcohol beverages.

Future Researchers. They should hopefully conduct a

research that is more extensive with regards to the topic

and dig deeper information about the effects of

alcoholism and use a large scale of time upon conducting

the study to make it reliable and successful.
