The above equation indicates that the work done is given by an area
in a (p, V ) diagram (Figure 4.1) [or a (p, a) diagram, where a is the
specific volume]. If dV > 0 (the system expands) it follows that
W > 0 and if dV < 0 (system contracts) it follows that W < 0.
Thus, positive work corresponds to work done by the system on
the environment and negative work corresponds to work done to
the system by the environment.
Now let us consider a situation where the system expands
through a reversible transformation from i to f and then contracts
