F. Pimentel Avenue, Brgy. 2, Daet, Camarines Norte

Delivery Unit: COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

SESSION PLAN (8/15/2019)

Course No. : T181 Units: 3 AY: 2019-2020
Descriptive Title: Structural Design 2 (Lecture) [ ] First Semester
Days: W Course/Year and Section: BSCE 5A [ / ] Second Semester
Time: 8:00-9:30am [ ] Summer

Intended Learning Outcomes: To be able to understand and apply the NSCP code in the analysis and design of
bending members (flexure) for sawn lumber.

Contents/Topics: Bending stress and prevention of lateral buckling (i.e. lateral stability).
Instruction(s): Refer to NSCP 2015 to understand and solve the given problems completely.
Teaching Learning Activities: Problem Solving
Assessment Tasks: Assignment #2
Resources: NSCP 2015

Problem 1: A 75mm × 400mm beam of made of wood assigned to you will be used to temporarily support a load at a job site
during construction. The beam will be dry, less than 19% moisture content, and the applied loads will be less than 7 days.
Solve for the allowable bending stress of the beam and the maximum moment that can be applied to it. (5 points)

Problem 2: Sawn lumber of 50mm × 400mm of made of wood assigned to you will be laid flat as formwork for underside of a
concrete beam. The load-duration will be less than 7 days and the lumber will be used in a wet condition. Determine the
adjusted stress for bending (5 points).

Problem 3: A timber joist sawn section made of wood assigned to you is 63% visually stress-graded in a service dry
condition is 50mm x 190mm (dressed dimensions) spaced at 0.30m on centers carries a floor load of 2.4kPa including
the floor finish. The joist is supported by the girders at 3m. Assume normal load duaration.
a. Solve for the allowable stress of the beam.
b. Solve for the maximum applied stress on the beam.
c. Is the beam satisfactory according to allowable stress design?
