Tanghalang Bagong Sibol (Theater and

Dance Company)
NARRATIVE REPORT

 The Tanghalang Bagong Sibol Theater and Dance Company, a school-based organization under the Division

of Malabon and Navotas, was formed in July 28, 1997 by Mrs. Aurora De Jesus. She was Department Head of

Filipino that time. It was established to recognize the culture and arts performed by the Malabonian youth from

Malabon National High School. In the early years of the group, they only perform theatrical plays until they

decided to put it into another level of performances and started to perform contemporary dances and a mixture

of both.

The members of the group take up workshops every summer. The group has honed over 400 students in the

art of stage acting, dancing, production and stage management, lights and sounds designs, and has produced

over a hundred dance pieces and plays through the years. The group also received many awards. Some of these

are: Best Play and Best Production Design, National Crime Prevention Drama Festival (2000) and National

Champion in Sayawit Competition (2004) and Dulansangan (2015) Grand Champion and many more.

Today, they are preparing for the upcoming Bnagkok Theater Festival 2019 with their official entry, “Poot ng

mga Ada ng Ilog”.

Every performance of the Tanghalang Bagong Sibol came from the creative mind of their coach and director

Mr. Anthony Cruz, a former student of the founder Mrs. Aurora De Jesus. He has been directing the group since

it was founded. He is responsible for all performances and plays that the group performed. According to Ms.

Porsha Mae Sales, an alumna of the Tanghalang Sibol (Batch 9) Mr. Anthony Cruz is very strict in both big or

small presentations. He does not interrupt the rehearsals but he will mention everything that he saw that violates

his principles.

For every performances and rehearsals, it is not that easy to follow especially if you are just a new member. In

following instructions you should know legal jargons or terminologies that they use. For example, for the

Tanghalang Bagong Sibol, they use basic terminologies in ballet like; Battement means ‘kick’ and alasicone for

‘spread apart the legs.’ From this, you will see the gracefulness, the attitude and connections of the performer to

the performance once they present.

In terms of the production making and costumes, they are using the performance fee and prizes as the budget

for props and costumes. In each batch, they have the costume custodians and Presidents.

Mostly, the members of this group are Malabonian youth that study at Malabon National High School. But if

they need more member they usually hire or accept people outside the campus for big production and events.

This is where you became a regular member of the Tanghalang Bagong Sibol.

The Tanghalang Bagong Sibol Theater and Dance Company is a very professional group. In just young ages

of the members, you can feel their heart and soul in every performances they make. It is such a privilege to see

and watch them performing live. You can really feel the connections between you as an audience and to them as

a performer. This group Malabon City’s pride. They are well-known and have engraved their name in the

modern art society. They are not just a school-based organization or group. They are one of the pillars of theater

for me. Together with the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the Tanghalang Bagong Sibol is one of the reason for

me to keep my heart burning to pursue my passion in performing. For me, it is not all about the money that you

will gain. It is about the enjoyment in life while doing your job as a committed performer.
