ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT
“Knowing where you ought to go is crucial in determining whether it is still a long way or you’re
almost there.”
Traditional Assessment
Traditional assessments are the conventional methods of testing which usually produce a
written document such as a quiz or an exam.
Alternative Assessment
• An alternative assessment is the one that is performance oriented.
• It aims to measure not only the correctness of the response, but also the thought process
involved in arriving at a response.
• It encourages the students to reflect their own learning in both depth and breadth.
Key Concepts of Alternative Assessment
1. Authenticity
2. Communicative
3. Clear Criteria
4. Opportunity for self or peer assessment
Some Ways of Assessing Alternatively
Grasps Activities
Product or Performance Assessment
• Students demonstrate knowledge and comprehension
• A product is created or a performance is presented
• Includes interviews, simulations, role-play, publication of essays, production of
infomercial, picture talk, creation of comic strips, journals, etc.
Portfolio Assessment
• Product Portfolio (Showcase Portfolio)
Demonstrates competence or mastery
• Process Portfolio
Illustrates steps in a process and continual growth
Used to share experiences
These may be presented electronically and posted in the internet. They are sometimes
called web folios or digital portfolios.
The Rubrics
• Rubrics are authentic and not generic
• Rubrics (for the quarterly performance based assessment) are crafted based on the
“qualifiers” in the performance standard.
