Rostro de Benjamin Zephaniah (1999)

Esta es una historia sobre Martin. Es el líder de la Banda de los

Tres y el bromista del aula. Vive en el 'nuevo East End' donde hay una
mezcla difícil de familias blancas, caribeñas, africanas y asiáticas. Debes
tener cuidado con lo que dices y a quién se lo dices en las calles del
vecindario de Martin, no es que Martin sea particularmente racista:
"No tengo nada contra los negros, son diferentes, bailan diferente y todo".
Entonces, para sorpresa de Martin, se encuentra pasándolo muy bien en
un club de rap. Después de abandonar el club, a alguien que conoce
vagamente de la escuela le ofrecen a Martin un viaje a casa. Sin
embargo, no sabe que el auto fue robado, y no es un viaje a casa, es un
viaje a la autodestrucción. En el inevitable accidente, Martin sufre
terribles quemaduras en la cara.
¿Te imaginas despertarte en un hospital y ni siquiera saber con certeza
si todavía tienes todas las extremidades? Cuando Martin toma
conciencia lentamente, lo comprueba, uno por uno. Todo parece estar
bastante bien. Su cara es lo último en lo que se molesta en
pensar. Realmente no puede sentir el daño, ya ves, debido a los
analgésicos.
Martin tiene mucho en qué pensar, y en su habitación del hospital tiene
el tiempo y el espacio para hacerlo. Obviamente, tiene que aceptar su
cara nueva y dañada. No solo eso, todos sus amigos tienen que aceptar
su nueva cara.
Además, Martin tiene que aprender a lidiar con todas las reacciones
diferentes de la gente común ante sus terribles heridas. Es un poco
diferente estar en el lado receptor de los prejuicios de otras personas,
sobre discapacidades, raza o cualquier otra cosa. Benjamin Zephaniah
es un poeta y escritor negro, por lo que quizás haya hecho que Martin
sea blanco para que el mensaje sobre los prejuicios se pueda aprender
bien.
Escrito en un lenguaje muy simple, Sofonías da vida a las calles: me
gusta especialmente la escena en la que Natalie malinterpreta las
sonrisas de las tres chicas y se prepara para una pelea, solo para que le
pregunten si le gusta ir de fiesta. Puedes calentar a estos personajes,
por todos sus defectos.

T his is a story about Martin. He's the leader of the Gang of Three,
and the classroom joker. He lives in the 'new East End' where there is a
difficult brew of white, Caribbean, African and Asian families. You have
to be careful what you say and who you say it to on the streets of
Martin's neighbourhood - not that Martin is particularly racist:
'I ain't got nothing against blacks, they're just different, they dance different
and everything.'
So it is rather to Martin's surprise, that he finds himself having a great
time at a rap club. Leaving the club later, Martin is offered a ride home
by someone he knows vaguely from school. He doesn't know the car is
stolen though, and it isn't a ride home, it's a ride to self-destruction. In
the inevitable accident Martin suffers terrible burns to his face.
Can you imagine waking up in a hospital, and not even knowing for sure
whether you have still got all your limbs? As Martin slowly comes to
consciousness he checks, one by one. Everything seems to be pretty
well OK. His face is the last thing he bothers to think about. He can't
really feel the damage, you see, because of the painkillers.
Martin has a lot of thinking to do, and in his hospital room he has the
time and space to do it. Obviously, he has to come to terms with his
new and damaged face. Not only that, all his friends have to come to
terms with his new face.
Also, Martin has to learn to deal with all the different reactions of
ordinary people to his terrible injuries. It's all a bit different being on the
receiving end of other people's prejudices, about disabilities, or race, or
anything else. Benjamin Zephaniah is a black poet and writer himself, so
perhaps he has made Martin white so that the message about prejudice
can be well learnt.
Written in very simple language, Zephaniah brings the streets to life - I
especially like the scene where Natalie misinterprets the three girls'
smiles and gets ready for a fight, only to be asked if she likes clubbing.
You can warm to these characters, for all their faults.
