WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people claim that not enough of the waste from homes is recycled. They say that
the only way to increase recycling is for the governments to make it a legal
requirement.

To what extend do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their
waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge
or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Historically, mass extinctions have been caused by catastrophic events like

asteroid collisions. This time, human activities are to blame. I do believe that for changes to
occur, we have to start small. One way of accomplishing this is to start recycling waste from
homes. Some people believe that in order to increase the rate of recycling waste from homes,
enactments of laws are needed. But, I strongly believe that providing facilities for recycling
and educating people on the importance of recycling are more vital than making recycling
waste from homes a legal requirement.

There are certain people who will make a move only if they are bounded by the law.
However, there are also people who does not need one. For these people, I urge the
government to provide them a decent access to recycling. Before forcing someone into doing
something for the benefit of everyone - in this case: enacting laws for recycling wastes from
homes - we should look at the reasons of why it is hard for people to do so. Imagine a city
where we have recycling units in all towns and villages, I don’t see a reason of why recycling
would be a burden anymore. This will give everyone an easy access to recycling to an extend
where they have no reason to throw waste around. Factually speaking, if we make a thorough
analysis of this problem we can see that in many cities where garbage is a big problem, there
is a dearth of recycling facilities. Hence, there’s no doubt that providing recycling facilities is
a smarter solution to increase the rate of recycling wastes from homes than enacting laws.

Many people are not aware of the benefits of recycling; they prefer to dump their
domestic waste on the streets or in landfills. Garbage is piling up in many cities across the
world. It is the breeding ground of fleas and mosquitoes that spread diseases. If all families
are getting an adequate education on the benefits of recycling, our cities and streets will be a
whole lot cleaner and healthier. Thus, instead of enacting laws, I believe the government
should educate people on the importance of recycling. They could set up talks and
commercials on television to make people realise the essence of recycling.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that providing facilities for recycling and educating
people on the importance of recycling are more relevant than making recycling wastes from
homes a legal requirement.
