Title: LINE PRESERVATION Work Procedure No.: M L- 21

Revision No. :0
Effective from : 26.01.2004

1.0.0 SCOPE

1.1.0 This chapter covers the procedure for preservation of pipeline after hydro
testing to safe guard the internal valve of pipeline against biological
deterioration & internal corrosion.

2.0.0 WORK PROCEDURE

2.1.0 The line preservation is taken up after installation of mainline valves and
insulating couplings, and when the period between dewatering and
commissioning is expected to be more than (3) three months or as specified in
the contract.

2.2.0 For carrying out preservation by air drying method swab pigs (in place of
disc/coup pigs) are used, which is followed by air-drying until residual moisture
of the discharge air in the pipeline has reached a dew point of (– ) 10°C or
lower and then keeping a residual pressure of 5 bar in the line under
preservation.

2.3.0 For preservation by injecting de-ionised water mixed with suitable additives
and corrosion inhibitor into the pipeline sections, location specific
methodology/procedure for wet preservation has to be firmed up and followed.

2.4.0 The base water samples shall be tested for presence of harmful
microbiological matter including SRB to ascertain the requirement of additives
for microbiological mitigation.

2.5.0 The filling procedure for preservative medium in the pipeline shall be same as
that for "Filling Operation" during hydro testing.

2.6.0 The period of effective preservation shall be kept at least three months more
than the anticipated date of commissioning to take care of any delay, which
may take place due to unforeseen circumstances.

2.7.0 The pressure during wet preservation shall be kept at 1 bar above static head,
after proper air bleeding while injecting the preservation medium.

2.8.0 The additives and corrosion inhibitor shall be sourced from reputed
manufacturers and their guidelines on duping with batch test certificates
obtained.

corrosion control properties respectively.

2.10.0 A comprehensive report shall be made and submitted to EIC after completion
of line preservation.

2.11.0 The disposal of preservative medium shall be in line with dewatering procedure
as mentioned in chapter on hydro test & also ensuring compliance of all
environmental safe guards/obligations.

6.2.0 CONTRACTOR

6.2.1 Engineer / Supervisor with adequate skilled / semi-skilled labourers.

7.0.0 CHECK POINTS

7.1.0 Uninterrupted communication system is available at both ends of the test

section and additionally one mobile communication system is also available
with the moving crew.

7.2.0 The approved line preservation methodology documents is available with the
Field Engineers at site.

7.3.0 The required quantity of inhibitor/additives (based on source water lab test
results) to be duped in the preservative medium is available at site The shelf
life of additives & corrosion is checked before use.

7.4.0 The water is free-from all contamination including sand & silt.

7.5.0 All temporary connections, fittings, hoses, etc. are of appropriate pressure
rating and in good condition and inspected, prior to starting the filling operation
of preservative medium.

7.6.0 Adequate quantities of spares of various pigs are available at site.

7.7.0 The fill pump differential head is at least 20% higher than the maximum
required and its flow rate is minimum 2 km/hr of test section or as specified. A
stand by fill pump may be available at site.

7.8.0 No scope for ingress of air into the pipe section from either the stuffing box of
the fill pump or any other connections exists.

7.9.0 The bourdon pressure gauges are of suitable pressure range & accuracy and
have valid calibration certificates.

7.10.0 The temporary scrapper traps, if required, are welded with pipe section along
with proper piping and valve arrangements in accordance with the approved
procedure and the detailed sketches, if any.
