1. a) Discuss the following terms : 6


i) Demand factor ii) Load factor
iii) Diversity factor iv) Plant factor

b) A feeder supplies 2 MW to an area. The total losses at peak load are 100 —KW and units 7
supplied to that area during an year are 5.61 million. Calculate the loss factor and total
annual kWh loss.

2. a) Derive the relation between load factor and loss factor. 6

b) Discuss in detail the classification of loads and also write their demand factor and 7
diversity factor for different load.

3. a) Derive the relation for voltage drop and power loss for the feeder with uniformly 7
distributed load of I Amp per unit length.

b) Explain the voltage choice and feeder design for secondary distribution system. 7

4. a) Explain the following type of feeders. 6

i) Radial type feeders with tie and sectionalizing switches.

ii) Loop type primary feeder.

b) Industrial area near a city was found to have a load density 0.5 MVA/km2. The total area 8
was to be located between a rectangular strip of 8 km x 4 km. Determine suitable number
of 33/11 kV substation their capacity and feeder length. The loads are served by 11 kV
feeders. If the feeder chosen has resistance of 0.93 /km and inductance of 0.33 H/km
what is voltage drop. Assume uniformly distributed load with 0.85 p.f. by.

5. a) A single phase A.C. distributor AB 300 m long is fed from end A and is loaded as under : 8
i) 100 A at 0.707 p.f. lagging 200 m from point A
ii) 200 A at 0.8 p.f. lagging 300 m from point A
The resistance and reactance at the distributor is 0.2  and 0.1  per kilometer. Calculate
the total voltage drop in the distributor. The load power factor refer to the voltage at far end.

b) In the figure shown, determine the voltage drop and minimum voltage point if point Q is 6
at +240V.

The distances are Pa = 50 m Pb = 200 m Pc = 600 m PQ = 1km and line R = 0.2 /km.

6. a) A single phase distributor 2 km long supplies a load of 120 A at 0.8 p.f. lagging at its far 8
end and a load of 80A at 0.9 p.f. lagging at its mid-point. Both power factor are referred to
the voltage at the far end. The resistance and reactance per km (go and return) are 0.05
and 0.1 respectively. If the voltage at the far end is maintained at 230 V calculate
i) Voltage at sending end
ii) Phase angle between voltage at two ends.

A kV /240V-0-240V transformer of 20 kVA capacity and 10% reactance supplies the

following single phase load. A L − ~ fault occurs on line AN. Determine the fault current
referred to primary side and fault mVA. Impedance of each line is J 0.01  and fault occurs
after the load.

7. a) Explain ON-LOAD tap changer in detail. 6

b) A 50 H.P., 50 Hz, 415V delta connected induction motor has a full load efficiency of 85% 7
and p.f. 0.75. The power factor is to improve to 0.9 using static capacitors.
Determine :
i) Rating of capacitor bank.
ii) Capacitance of each unit.
If they are connected as
a) Delta & b) Star in F.

8. a) What are the different methods for voltage control ? Briefly explain any one. 6

b) A power system has 15,000 kVA capacity operating at 0.65 p.f. lag and cost of capacitor 7
to correct the p.f. is Rs 1000/kVAr, determine the cost involved to increase the p.f. to
i) 0.85 lag ii) 0.95 lag iii) unity

with line diagram.
