Overall Dimensions
The overall measurements for a Volleyball court is 60 feet by 30 feet. Each side of the
court is therefore 30 feet by 30 feet in size.
Center Line
A center line is marked at the center of the court dividing it equally into
30 feet squares.
Attack Line
The attack line is marked 10 feet on each side of the center line of the
court. Some rules show the attack line at 9′ 10″ however that includes the width
of the line itself (2″).
Service Line
A service line is marked 10 feet inside the right sideline on each back
line. This is the area from which the server may serve the volleyball.
The Net
The net is hung directly above the center line at 7 feet 4 inches for
women and 8 feet for men.
Standards
Volleyball standards should be set at 36 feet apart, 3 feet on either side
of the side-lines.
Ceiling Height
The minimum ceiling height should be 23 feet. Preferably the ceilings
should be higher.
Skills
Knowledge of the basic fundamental skills of volleyball, common errors, and suggested
corrections will enable a coach to provide efficient and effective teaching and coaching
strategies for every athlete. The following are described: serving, passing (forearm underhand
passing), setting (overhead passing), attack options (hitting/spiking), blocking (from attack and
defend positions), and defensive skills (rolling & sliding).
1. Serving
Serving is the first weapon that can generate an immediate point, begin a game, or ignite
an offense. A well-placed serve (whether to a weak passer, at the setter, at the quick attacker,
or to a weak formation) that is also difficult to pass puts the opponent at a disadvantage. Focus
on correct technique and strive for success. In addition, always serve to score points, NOT just
to get the ball into the opponent’s court.
Most Volleyball technology that is available for the general public technology is
invented in America due to the US Volleyball Federation.
This technology is used throughout preparation and performance training, because the
smooth action of the elastic cord guides the ball back to the player every time.
Personal Microphones
In America some coaches are using personal microphones to communicate with players
so that they can better position themselves on the court during training. So far this technology
is limited to American teams who use it as a training tool to better develop team strategy. It
remains to be seen if other countries will begin to use this technology. The draw back of this
technology is that it is expensive and it currently not allowed to be used during matches and so
is limited to a training tool.
The Pass Rite aims to improve the passing abilities of a player. So that they are able to
better play and lower the chances for a team to lose point due to a bad pass.
This technology is available for the general public and teams alike and was invented in
America thanks to the US Volleyball Federation.
