through the creation and support of worldwide initiatives related to health, arts and culture, social

culture, health care, environment and social charities i.e. rehabilitation of disaster-affected communities.

Philippines Foundation’s donation of more than P9.7 million in 2009 to support the rehabilitation of the
Pasig River. The Foundation pledged a total of P49 million, spread over five years, for the Sun Life
Financial Legacy of Light village, an environmentally friendly site for 580 new housing units to be built

2. BDO, Unibank Inc.

We develop and implement programs to address the needs of the underserved and contribute to
solving social problems

BDO Foundation was founded in 2008 as the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank, the
largest bank in the country.

A non-stock, non-profit organization, the foundation develops and implements programs to address the
needs of the underserved and contribute to addressing social problems. It also serves as the channel for
BDO’s outreach and giving back initiatives.

We are an active member of the NGO community. BDO Foundation is duly accredited by the Department
of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and Philippine Council for
NGO Certification (PCNC). We are also a member of the Association of Foundations (AF) and League of
Corporate Foundations (LCF).

Recognition from these agencies and organizations is significant as it affirms the foundation’s status as a
non-profit organization that meets standards of good governance, program relevance and effectiveness,
sound financial management, credibility, transparency and accountability. The accreditation and
recognition also pave the way for greater collaboration between the foundation, donors and government
agencies. It enables us to do our work more effectively.

BDO Foundation’s initiatives fall under two program pillars: (1) disaster response, rehabilitation and
rebuilding; and (2) financial inclusion.

Disaster response, rehabilitation and rebuilding

BDO Unibank’s wide branch network all over the country gives us the capability to conduct relief
operations immediately after a calamity. Leveraging on the volunteerism of branch officers and
employees, BDO Foundation provides food packs, and in some cases, even hygiene kits and school
supplies. In areas where there is no BDO presence, the foundation partners with church groups and
other NGOs operating in the affected areas.

The rehabilitation and rebuilding work depends on the needs of the affected communities, but BDO
Foundation gives priority to health centers or rural health units. Depending on the need and the
presence of partners, the foundation also builds classrooms for public schools and housing units for
affected families. In the past, the foundation was able to mobilize employee donations that were used to
fund the construction of community centers and multi-purpose halls, and support livelihood projects.

Financial inclusion

Through its financial inclusion pillar, BDO Foundations hopes to make financial education and financial
services more accessible to people, especially the underserved. Under this pillar, BDO Foundation has
two main programs: (1) financial literacy or financial education, and (2) capability-building for small
entrepreneurs.
The flagship program for financial education is BDO Foundation’s partnership program with the
Department of Education (DepEd) and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

Dubbed the Financial Literacy Program for Schools, the initiative supports DepEd’s efforts to strengthen
financial literacy in its K-12 curriculum and provide financial literacy education for its teaching and non-
teaching personnel. It also contributes to the pillar on Financial Education and Consumer Protection of
BSP’s National Strategy for Financial Inclusion.

Part of the program is the deployment of financial literacy videos produced by BDO Foundation in
collaboration with DepEd and BSP. These videos, accompanied by discussion guides and lesson plans
developed by DepEd master teachers, are designed to make lessons on financial management engaging
and compelling for students and teachers.

By sharing lessons on financial responsibility with educators and the Filipino youth, we hope to promote
financial inclusion, contribute to the development of a financially literate citizenry and support nation-
building.

In partnership with SM Foundation under its Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan program, BDO Foundation also
extends its financial education program to fruits and vegetables farmers who participate in the said
training program.
The financial literacy or financial education program will soon be expanded to overseas Filipino workers
and their families as well as the uniformed and civilian personnel of the Philippine Army.

The capability-building program for small entrepreneurs is a partnership initiative with One Network
Bank (ONB), a rural bank of BDO. The program focuses on building the small entrepreneurs’ capabilities
in business development and management, financial management and market linkages.

GOKONGWEI BROTHERS FOUNDATION

GBF Logo

“Championing excellence and equity in education, GBF will strive to expand reach while ensuring
sustained impact.”

GRACE R. COLET, Executive Director

Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) was established in 1992 with the goal of having a lasting impact
on education in the Philippines. Guided by its mission of building the future through education, GBF
works toward advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), believing this is the
driving force for sustainable national development.

The Foundation’s first major project was an industry-standard Technical Training Center (TTC) built in
Pasig City in 1999. Initially supporting the upskilling of JG Summit's technical workers, GBF TTC is
currently the home of the GBF Iskolar ni Juan Technical-Vocational Scholarship Program.

Through its various scholarship programs like Iskolar ni Juan, GBF has supported outstanding students in
college, high school, and technical-vocational fields since 2006.

By providing support to reputable schools, GBF hopes to strengthen academic programs that are vital in
nation-building. Its endowment to the Ateneo de Manila University led to the renaming of its business
school to the John Gokongwei School of Management in 2002. In 2011, an endowment to De La Salle
University led to the renaming of its engineering program to the Gokongwei College of Engineering.

To maximize reach and impact, GBF has partnered with JG Summit Business Units and fellow education-
oriented organizations in efforts such as providing scholarships, enabling quality internship for scholars,
and donating school buildings.

2018 Performance
As of yearend 2018, GBF has supported 589 scholars through graduation. Of which, 39% graduated in
2018. Among GBF’s 402 enrolled scholars, more than half are pursuing STEM courses in college. GBF
offered seven scholarship programs in 2018:

2018 Major Developments

GBF strengthened linkages with JG Summit Business Units and strategic partners to further its thrust to
advance STEM education. JG Summit BU partners for education-to-employment opportunities for
scholars also increased from 6 to 8 in 2018.
Eight JG Summit BUs participated in the pilot rollout of GBF’s problem-based OJT program for its college
scholars. GBF also worked with URC-BCFG in standardizing the Iskolar ni Juan OJT curriculum. Ensuring
better learning experience for scholars, the improved design enables translation of their intensive
technical training into competence and productivity in the workplace.

In 2018, GBF optimized and streamlined its scholars sourcing processes to ensure that the most
deserving Filipino youth are given the leg up. GBF put systems in place to measure its programs’ impact
and improve stakeholders’ experience through efforts such as graduated scholars tracking and
beneficiary feedback mechanism. GBF also started the work on its organization website and social media
platforms for improved communication with current and future beneficiaries and partners.

Key external partners engaged in 2018 include PBEd and the University of the Philippines National
Institute for Science and Mathematics Development (UP NISMED), with GBF pledging support for their
programs for would-be and current science and mathematics educators. GBF also started building the
foundation of strong ties with the Department of Education (DepEd) and its division offices through
determined exploration of partnership opportunities. In September, GBF sponsored the national
assembly of DepEd leaders, the largest gathering of education officials from the national to school levels.

5. Bank of the Philippine Islands

BPI Asset Management and Trust Corporation has extended help to the families affected in the ongoing
crisis in Marawi City through Caritas Manila, the social arm of the Archdiocese of Manila. The ongoing
clash between government troops and terrorist groups has caused a number of people in the area to
leave their homes. Recognizing the urgent needs and multiple risks faced by the evacuees, monetary
donation and in-kind donations such as water, canned goods, powdered milk, hygiene kits and clothes
were given to Caritas Manila as relief response to our fellow Filipinos.

6. Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc.

The Aboitiz Group’s commitment to sharing with the less fortunate is a philosophy that traces its
roots over a century ago when its forefathers first established their business in Leyte. This legacy of
sharing has been instilled and passed on through generations of its corporate history. It was one of its
first leaders, Don Ramon Aboitiz, who started corporate philanthropy through donations to various
groups and needing communities, as well as looking after the welfare of his employees.
In 1965, Don Ramon gave a big part of his personal wealth to establish the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation,
Inc. (RAFI). RAFI is a family-based foundation that is rooted from the philosophy of its founder that “the
dignity of man is best respected by helping him realize his hopes and by sharing with him the burden of
his fears.” Its vision has consistently been “Touching People, Shaping the Future” while its current focus
areas are integrated development, micro-finance & entrepreneurship, culture & heritage, leadership &
citizenship, and education.

As the Aboitiz Group diversified into many businesses, its commitment to sharing grew accordingly. After
decades of giving to various worthy causes in an informal manner, and with the increasing magnitude of
assistance needed in areas where its companies operate, the Aboitiz management decided to find a
more efficient and effective way of giving. Thus in 1988, the Aboitiz Group established the Aboitiz
Foundation (Foundation) as its corporate foundation to address the social and economic development
needs of marginalized members of society.

Over the past years, The Foundation has been committed to its mission of helping people help
themselves and pursuing its vision to be the neighbor of choice.

It constantly delivers value to its stakeholders, including communities where there is the Aboitiz
presence. It focuses its CSR efforts on education, enterprise development, and environment. They are
always ready to help in times of calamities, aiming to be among the first to respond.

Since the late 1980s, its initiatives have evolved from a CSR 1.0, which involves simple philanthropic
activities, to a CSR 2.0, which engages projects that are more sustainable for its beneficiaries and at the
same time aligned with its businesses. Moving forward, it intends to carefully select projects that would
help it reach its goal of achieving CSR 2.0.

One such project is Weather Philippines Foundation (WPF), which is Foundation’s largest single donation.
WPF aims to deliver critical and accurate weather forecasts to the Filipino community, with the hope of
improving nationwide disaster preparedness, and timely response to variable weather conditions. By
bringing together the Aboitiz Group’s resources and network, and partner MeteoGroup’s technical
expertise, WPF is poised to be the country’s premiere private weather information/content provider.
WPF plans to have roughly 1,000 automated weather station/devices installed across the Philippines.
