Name of the Activity: Morning Stretch Activity

Background

Stretching is the deliberate lengthening of muscles in order to increase muscle flexibility and joint
range of motion. Stretching activities are an important part of any exercise or rehabilitation program.
They help warm the body up prior to activity thus decreasing the risk of injury as well as muscle soreness.

As an exercise in itself, the morning stretch has the following benefits:


1. Improves circulation
2. Enhances respiratory function
3. Promotes elimination
4. Stimulates the release of endorphins (brain chemicals that boost mood and help fight
depression)
5. Helps regulate metabolism, and it
6. Enhances immune function

General Objectives: After 30 minutes of morning stretch, the patients will be able to:

1. Achieve reduction of muscle tension


2. Enhance their ability to learn and perform skilled movements
3. Develop social interactions with the student nurses and other patients and,
4. Express their feelings in a safe and healthy way.

Specific Objectives: After 30 minutes of the morning stretch, the patients will be able to:

1. Follow/mimic the leaders’ exercise movements


2. Follow the timing/rhythm of the music
3. Verbalize relief of stress and muscle tension, and positive feelings after the activity
4. Actively participate throughout the activity

Materials:
1. Sound System/Speakers
2. Microphone
3. Tarpaulin with the name of the school and the title of the activity

Procedure:

I. Introduction
a. The group members, with the assistance of the other student affiliates, are going to
gather all the patients in the activity area.
b. The leader greets the participants, clinical instructors, and fellow student nurses. He
also introduces himself and the school he comes from.
c. He then asks a student affiliate to lead the morning prayer
d. After the prayer, the leader then orients the participants to the date.
e. The leader introduces the activity to the participants and discusses the various purposes
of the activity and the benefits the participants could benefit from it.

II. Morning Stretch Activity Mechanics

a. The routine will proceed in a cephalocaudal manner. It will first focus on tilting the head
from left to right for 16 counts, head rotation for 16 counts, arm rotation for 16 counts, hip
rotation for 16 counts, leg stretching for 16 counts and lastly, ankle rotation for 16 counts.

III. Rules and Regulations

 First, the participants must listen to and place their full attention on the leaders
giving the instructions for the activity
 Second, the patients must not do unnecessary things that would disturb other
participants and consequently disrupt the activity
 Lastly, the participants will express their feelings regarding the activity
