Senior Highschool it’s self is a curriculum that requires a massive number of school work. It is fomulated to prepare the students for college life. Aside from the hardship of being a senior high schoool student, there are the working students. Double the tasks and because they have a larger task, they also have better time management. The research aims to investigate the state of working students and the effects of working on their lives as students.

The research utilizes qualitative research wherein case study approach is used. The respondents are judgement/purposively selected Grade Eleven Senior High School. The researchers chose the respondents who is a working student. The researchers ethically considers the secrecy of information as the respondents has tetimonies that crosses the borders of moral standards.

The results shows that the students attitude or behaviour is affected for in terms of social connection, they have less time to socialize and in other terms, their confidence level and their maturity is developed as they work and connect to their workmates. The academic performance is also affected negatively as they have no energy to participate. In terms of social life, they have the leas time to socialize with their family, friends and teachers. Being a student at work is also benificial as they can apply what they have learned in school

The students whould learn to properly manage their time. Furthermore, they should start to socialize as having less time to socialize is actually detrimental to mental health. They should also learn inspite having a lowered academic performance, they also show great determination to support themselves

INTRODUCTION

School becomes very different when a student enters senior high

school. More time projects and activities that is needed to be passed and

less time for their selves. But looking at a different perspective, a working

student is a very special case. Managing their time and balancing their

part time work and their education is a very heavy task. But what are the

reason of the working students for working? Is it because they need more

financial support or much worst, they do not have financial support. This is

where the researchers takes place. They intend to know the reason and

have a deeper understanding on the working students. In this case, it will

be a great help for the working students and to motivate them that what

they were doing should not be a hindrance to reach their goals.

According to Villahermosa, Oba-0, and Bagabaldo(2017), it is typical

nowadays for students to work while studying to pursue their dreams in life,

they also said that expenses for college education are never cheaper as

generation passes. This is also applicable for senior high school because

senior high school teachers always say that the senior high students

should act like a college student because being a senior high school student is basically

should act like a college student because being a senior high school

student is basically being a college freshmen. Furthermore, Villahermosa

et al.(2017) stated that one of the best ways to earn a degree and to fulfill

dreams is to work while studying.

The study focuses the scope to Makiling Integrated School for it is a

very convenient place to start up everything. A school comprising more

than a thousand students but the researchers will mainly focus on the

senior high school department.

Another statement from Villahermosa et al.(2017) says that challenges

may occur

especially being a working student and that the life of

working scholars has never been easy. They also stated that there are so

many working scholars who easily give up their dreamed “better future”

because the difficulties of the life of a working student. An alarming fact

cited by Villahermosa et al. from the website, CollegeBoard, states that

students who work more than 15 to 20 hours per week often experience

decreased school success, which can lead to dropping out entirely. These

facts had awaken the researchers for the truth and to strive to find more

effects of working as a part timer to the school life of students. This might

have a negative outcome for it tries to unravel the impact of working to

students for the researchers assume that most of the results would give them negative answers

students for the researchers assume that most of the results would give

them negative answers but this negativities that the researchers had

assumed might also awaken others to further helping and understanding

the working students.

To know the impact of working as a part timer on the school life o

working students, the researchers are planning to conduct an interview

on selected respondents which are the working students.

The researchers will unravel the impacts of being a part time employee

on the school life of the working students; thus they will be able to properly

understand the struggles of being a working student and retell the stories

of students who strive and work hard to make their dreams come true and

also to make people accept them and to forgive them on the mistakes

that they might have done because they are misunderstood.

might be because they are working hard in their part time work or they

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In this chapter, both local and foreign literature, as well as study

related to the impact of working on the lives of senior high school

students has been reviewed. Themes have been derived from the

objectives of the study that include; exploring the impact of working

on the lives of senior high school students that of which includes and

limited by the researchers, three aspects, the school life, social life,

and life at work.

According to international labor organization(2003) quoted by

Muluk(2017), a form of employment that requires or carries fewer

hours per week is called a part time job. Likewise, a person who

works within fewer hours than those who work full time is called part

timer. Furthermore, Muluk also stated that part time employees in

United States(U.S.) as of 2009 may not have the entitlements given

to the regular employees such as Health insurance. In addition,

Muluk concluded that students working less than 20 hours during their

semesters can be defined as Working Student. Moreover, despite the

variation in the amount of working hours, it is common to see students

to work full time during semester break. In a local perspective, Commission on Higher Education(CHED),

to work full time during semester break.

In a local perspective, Commission on Higher Education(CHED),

as cited by ABSCBN news(2011), stated that there are about 216,000

students in the Philippines who are juggling work and school. Students

combine study and work for the main reason of satisfying their

consumption aspirations(Baert, Rotsaert, Verhaest, & Omey, 2016;

Watts & Pickering, 2000).

School Life

School, as defined by the Oxford Living Dictionaries is an institution

that gives instruction in a particular discipline. Collins Dictionary

defined school life as the period of life that a person spends at school,

therefore, school life is the period of a person’s life in which people are

guided, molded and directed towards adulthood and their eventual

roles in society. On the other hand, according to International

Standard Classification of Education(ISCED), secondary education

is comprised of two levels, the Junior High School and Senior High

School. Furthermore, ISCED stated that the secondary education is

the second and final phase of primary education, therefore, students in the brink of finishing

the second and final phase of primary education, therefore, students

in the brink of finishing the secondary education, specifically, senior

high has been well thought about the things that students should

know before entering tertiary education.

Senior High School on the other hand as stated by Pamplona,

Pastrana, Reig and Reyes(2017) is a system known worldwide that

had been recognized by the Philippines sector of education and

recently been added to the education system. A person’s education

is one of the most important factors in determining whether they

will become a productive member of the society (Pamplona et al.

2017. Time goes and as the students will gradually go up on a higher

education: Senior High School and as the level of education goes

up, so does the amount of expenses needed. According to Marsh &

Kleitman(2005) mentioned by Beerkens, Mägi, & Lill(2011), many youths

in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD)

countries consider being employed as a student employee a norm

in both secondary and tertiary education. Philippines, on the other

hand, despite not being a member of OECD, Villahermosa, Oba-0,

and Bagabaldo(2017) stated that nowadays, the students in order to

pursue their dreams, typically work while studying.

The acquisition of general and transferable skills such as work values , communication skills and

The acquisition of general and transferable skills such as work

values , communication skills and sense of time management was

given way by the student employment (Buscha, Maurel, Page, &

Speckesser, 2012; Rothstein, 2007; Staff & Mortimer, 2007). In addition,

students who acquire these skills and other work related skills can

apply the things that they had acquire on school and in return, the

things that the school taught the student can also use it in work,

therefore heightening performances in both fields.

more than 15 to 20 hours

per week often experience decrease in

school success which can lead to dropping out entirely. Furthermore,

research(Villahermosa et al. 2017) suggests that working long hours

can limit opportunities that enhance intellectual development.

Primary Orientation Theory(2002) as suggested by Baert, Neyt Omey

and Verhaest,(2017) talks about the poor academic performance of

students is related of the orientation of working student towards work

rather than school.

In addition, the research of Villahermosa et al. also suggests that time between classes and

In addition, the research of Villahermosa et al. also suggests that

time between classes and student jobs are hard to accomplish and

results to cramming. Conflicts in the designated are also causes low

academic performance. With the said problems, complying for the

school works that had been lost because of working cannot be easily

done because, as the research suggests, instructors or teachers are

sometimes unapproachable because of schedule conflicts and high

standards.

Social Life

According

to

Osterman(2000),

Goodenow(1993),

and

Coleman(1988) noted by Van Maele and Van Houtte(2011), social

integration results to positive outcomes and a prominent social

integration source in school is positive teacher-student outcomes

and this relationship also negates the effects of student alienation

that of which causes educational problems. Student Alienation,

also known as student enstrangement, is not only experience by the

regular students, but perhaps, working students as well.

Agenda(2016) working students share their common traits and their

goals in life.

Therefore the working students creates a social bond

within their social context that connects them in a number of ways

and give each other motivation on work

.

An article in the Odyssey Online, written by Rosberg(2015) suggests

that working and studying is both a blessing and a curse. It gives a

student the opportunity to earn while studying and on the other hand,

some partially negative effects on the interpersonal interaction.

Social Capital Theory suggests that linkages to other student who

are able to generate while working and studying leads to better employment outcomes. In short,

are able to generate while working and studying leads to better

employment outcomes. In short, interpersonal relationship of part

timing students with other working students that has attained success

in their part time field and it leads them to taking the same track,

given the success of the other student.

Despite the positivity given by student employment, research

(Villahermosa

et

al.

2017)

suggests

that

time

management

for

working students is not an easy task. Working students also cram with

their schedules and they cannot even properly manage their time

between work and school.

Furthermore,

working

interpersonal relationships and explore things that can make them

grow,

Villahermosa

et

al.

added.

In

addition,

conflict

between

supervisors or authorities and coworkers that is caused by attitude or

inequality also causes poor work performance.

In the perspective of sociology, student employment is connected

with behavior problem among youth and in worst case, alcohol

usage, delinquency, and use of illegal drugs(Neyt et al(2017); Safron,

Schulenberg, & Bachman, 2001; McMorris & Uggen, 2000; Steinberg, Fegley, & Dornbusch, 1993). To add

Schulenberg, & Bachman, 2001; McMorris & Uggen, 2000; Steinberg,

Fegley, & Dornbusch, 1993). To add more, pursuing working and

studying is often related to psychological and psychosomatic stress.

Life at Work

According

to

ACT

Agenda(2016) quoted directly as follows, “working learners share their

commonalities, including an integration of professional goals and

personal life, an interest in applying and practicing what they learn,

problem solving ability and a viewpoint that connects and intermingles

personal aims, learning and work”.

Therefore the working students

creates a social bond within their social context that connects them

in a number of ways and give each other motivation on work.

Human Capital Theory(Becker, 1964) gives the idea that the

student employment makes the student acquainted on work values,

communication skills, and sense of time management and also the

skills related to their part time jobs.

To add more, working learners give institutions who give internships a number of benefits. As

To add more, working learners give institutions who give internships

Agenda(2016), directly quoted, “Institutions that offer internships find

that working learners who complete internships enrich the classroom

(Swift & Kent,1999), thereby creating a more fulfilling experience”.

In addition, the educational institutions

low academic performance, it also gives positive effects

on the

The answer might be because they are working hard in their part time

work or they are motivated on working

that in work, people have individual differences and same will also

Furthermore, Villahermosa et al. also stated that conflict in work

might cause a situation that will damage the work or business. Their

results also denotes that this conflict could be too distracting and will

affect the performance of the students.

Synthesis

The concepts gathered by the researchers gave better grasp

on maneuvering their research. Villahermosa et al.(2017) gave the

researchers the ideas concerning the daily life of working students,

the problems that they encounter and also the positive an negative

effects of part time employment on the social and work life of

students. Villahermosa et al. also concluded that any problem will

have a consecutive effects to students and that working and studying

at the same time gives consequences, whether be it in terms of life at

school, social life, or life at work.

Furthermore, Muluk(2017) contributed on defining what is part

time

work and what is a part timer

and some review of related

literature as well. In addition, Pamplona et al.(2017) gave ideas and

information on the Philippines’ system of education and gave ideas to the researchers about how

information on the Philippines’ system of education and gave ideas

to the researchers about how raw is the new system of education is.

Literature review provided by Neyt(2011) and Public Agenda(2016)

gave concrete supports for the three sub categories: School Life,

Social Life, and Life at Work of Working Students. Supporting theories

that is related to the research and been cited was reviewed by the

fore said authors.

Research Methodology

This chapter contains the methods used in conducting the research.

It includes the research design, research instrument, data gathering

procedure, ethical considerations and the analysis of the qualitative

data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used the case study approach in their qualitative

research. The case study approach collects and presents detailed

information about a particular participant or a small sample. As a form

of qualitative descriptive research, individuals are scrutinized with great

attention and conclusions can be drawn closely only to the answers of the

participants and inside the specific context.(Colorado State University,

2018)

In addition, qualitative research is appropriate to be used in this study

for this zeroes in on the lived experiences of the participants to answer

and to determine various aspects of the impact of being employed as a

part timer on the lives of senior high school students that are acquired as they

part timer on the lives of senior high school students that are acquired as

they transition from the classroom setting to workers. Moreover, the study

uses the qualitative method through oral and written interviews to present

and describe the lived experiences of the respondents with regard to

their experience within the said context.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study will be from the Senior High Department

of Makiling Integrated School. The participants were composed of 10

Senior High School Students and will be chosen purposively.

The method is also known as subjective or selective sampling method

which relies on the judgement of the researchers to choose which

respondent is suitable for their study as stated by Ben-Shlomo, Brookes, and

Hickman(2013). furthermore, a participant may completely be chosen or

be approached by the researchers. This approach is prominently used

by the media to ask for public opinions and also, in qualitative research.

The method of judgement sampling is a time friendly and cost effective

method which then results to a range of responses. The method is also prone to

method which then results to a range of responses. The method is also

prone to criticism for it might cause volunteer bias but the researchers will

be practicing transparency to avoid bias selection

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Before the survey was conducted, the researchers obtained permission

from their school principal, Mrs. Elenita M. Villanueva with the help of their

research adviser, Mr. Merlin M. Remetio. Thereafter, upon the approval of

the principal, personal interviews were conducted on the time and date

agreed upon.

The result of the interviews will be recorded, transcribed

and analyzed. Themes were generated out of the interviews conducted.

INSTRUMENTATION

In gathering pertinent information, the researchers used three (3)

corollary questions which served as their guide questions . Thereafter,

the researchers personally approached the ten (10) MIS students and

explained the purpose of their inquiry and interview.

The interview will

The responses suggests that the maturity of working students

develop and grow while working. Mature, as defined by Cambridge

Dictionary, is the quality that shows that they are well developed

emotionally. Working Student 2 exemplified that such maturity is

caused by the adults that the aforesaid working student interact

with from work.

In the view of Epistemology, this development is known as tabula

rasa. It is a theory that suggests that an infant is an empty slate or

tabula rasa and will then be sculpted by the environment and

social interaction that he is involved to. It is seamlessy applicable

to working students as being such might be their first time in such

world rendering them as infants who needs development.

Emotional maturity, according to a website known as The Root,

is the ability to handle situation without necessarily escalating

them. While the website, Exploring your Mind emphasizes that

Being annoyed is another effect to the working student’s attitude

or behavior. It is cause by anyone who disturbs them when they try to

rest because of tiredness from work. Not just tiredness but they also

get annoyed when they are being bothered by their classmates when

they are complying their missed activities

In order to have good academic performance, a student should

participate well but for working students, they have less time to

participate. This is cause by night-long wakefulness in work. And by the

time they are at school, they feel so tired and tends to be too weary

to participate.

Morning is the best time for people to learn, only if a person has

a good night sleep or rest according to e-Learning Industry website.

Therefore, people who’s work is active by night might have less capacity

to learn and even participate in anything by the morning especially

the working students. Basically, tiredness is resulted by lack of sleep

and is very detriemental to a person. The aforesaid effect is only one

of the numerous effect of lack of sleep and another is tiredness which

then causes lack of participation.

their family and lack love from their family. And effects like lon term

mental health problems and reuced overall potentail and happiness,

interaction with elder or senior workmates, they tend to lose their shyness

as they see more mature kinds of people around their workplace.

The student lacks social contact as they work more and more. This

affects life because the more they work, the more they are limited to

build interpersonal relationships and explore things that can make them

grow(Villahermosa et. al 2017).

Annoyance to classmates due to work exhaustion is also an effect on

their attitude or behavior. Because they work all night long, they get tired

from their work and when they are at school, they are bothered by their

classmates and they hate it.

Academic Performance

They participate less in the activities and other school related matters.

They have spent their energy and time when they are at work. Therefore, their energy

performance. A website said that working students gain low academic

performance for it is an effect of having less sleep which they experience

at work.

In contrast, some respondents said that working has no effect on their

academic performance. They said that even when they are working,

they do not leave their education unattended and that the survival of

an individual’s education solely relies to it’s self. When they are at work

and at school, they have a single goal, it is to finish their goals. Regarding

the statement, Benbunan-Fich(2012) cited a statement of König and

Waller(2010) that multiple tasks with fairly similar objectives does not

affect the academic performance as negatively as those with dissimilar

purposes.

2. The respondent’s view on how does working affect the social life of students

in terms of relationship to their Family, Friends, and Teachers

Family According to the responses, the working students has less time to bond with their

Family

According to the responses, the working students has less time to bond

with their family. From their work, to the school, time is irrelevant to take

care of one’s self if such is a student. Work takes so much time and school

also does, their less priority is their family so they have less time to bond with

them.

The working students also said that by working while studying, they can

support themselves. As a result, they were able to lessen the family burden.

They save the family from financial stress.

Friends

The respondents also stated that they have no enough time to bond

with their friends. This is caused by their work as it consumes time and they

also have school to attend to. In contrast, some students answered that

they become more close to their friends because their friends understand

their situation.

Teachers Some respondents said that working has no effect on their relationship to their teachers.

Teachers

Some respondents said that working has no effect on their relationship

to their teachers. The reason behind this is that the respondents is not

even close to their teacher therefore, they have no relationship to lose nor

improve.

Another result of conflict in time is that the working students do not have

enough time to comply to their missed subjects. Added that they have no

close relation to teachers, they really are having hard time for completing

he tasks they have missed when they are working.

3. The respondent’s view on how does working as a student affect their life at work.

A student is expected to devote their time on studying. Being a worker

while studying at the same time is pretty obvious that it will result to time

conflict and also the mindset of finishing their school tasks will distract them

at work.

Lastly, a student is expected to have learned more than enough at school and according

Lastly, a student is expected to have learned more than enough at

school and according to the findings, the useful lessons that they have

learned in school can be directly applied on their work at some fairly relative

situations.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings, majorit of the effect of working on the lives of the

students is negative. In terms of attitude and behavior, the workin students

lack social contact and they get annoyed to their classmates esily but

working also heightens their confidence and develops their maturity which

in contrast is positive. The academic performance of the students were

affected negatively. They participate less in the activities and discussion

and their academic performance is low but some of the answers show that

the academic performance is not severely affectd by working.

The relatioship of the students to their family is also affected negatively

because the participants said that they have no time to bond with their

family as they were trying to balance their work and studies. This effect

was balance by their salary as the respondents also said that as they earn

money, supporting their education by themselves negates major family

burdens in terms of finance. Their relationship with friends is also affected negatively as they

burdens in terms of finance. Their relationship with friends is also affected

negatively as they have more time to balance their school and work that

results a very little time to bond having which they use to rest. In terms of

their relation to their teachers, they said that in terms of it, they do not have

ample relationship to their teachers but the problem they have is they just

use their time to rest instead of trying to find their teachers to comply their

missed activities.

Lastly, being a student while aslo working is an edge. They said that most

of what the students have learned in the school can be directly applied

to their work at some related situations. But when they are at work, the

are distracted by the thinking that they might have activities to finish or

assignments to submit.

Most of the themes that emerged in this study shows negative effect

of working on the lives of the students. Therefore, in this sample of ten

respondents, work affects them negatively. These negative effect applies

on their social relation which might result to bad mental health and a very

small social capital.

their work and sacrifice their social life.

-Parents must move and help their children to socialize.

-The working students should continue utilizing what they have learned from

school to their work

-To the future researchers, the effectiveness and validity of the research

relies on the proper reviews of related literature and studies and also to the

number of respondens therefore, one should try more than ten respondents

if time and resources will be valid.
