The Intern: Life and Career Lessons


Everyone watches movies. There are movies out there that will fit whatever situation you
are going through or however you are feeling at any moment. There are movies that just make you
laugh so hard your stomach hurts, there are movies that give you terrifying nightmares and there
are movies that just make you feel good. Movies can depict some of the most important life lessons.
Movies did not film just to entertain the audience, they also taught us many valuable lessons about
life, the world, and everything. The Intern is a 2015 American comedy film that taught many life
lessons like work and career lessons. I will write my understanding about the movie and I will
connect it to the lessons in my course subject which is Human behavior in Organization.

Before accepting a certain applicant, most of the companies do the employee recruitment.
It is the process by which organizations attracts applicants and also the process of choosing
individuals who have relevant qualifications to fill existing or projected job openings. The
organizations conduct an interview in able for them to screen out the essential qualities of their
choice. It includes; educational background, working experience, and also the age. The plot of the
intern revolves around Jules Ostin, the founder and the CEO of the company, and Ben Whittaker,
a retired executive from DEX One, applies to a senior citizen intern program, after retirement has
become too boring for him. For me, the large gap in their age show a different types of work
behavior since fifty years’ gap is too big. One of the thing that I learned in this movie is that “senior
or older people have the knowledge that everyone in a younger generation don’t have”. We can
see how the people inside the office love Ben and the way he builds a good relationship towards
them. I learned from Ben that your age won’t define your career in life. Commonly, seventy (70)
years old is the age where people withdraw from work and retire. But in the case of Ben, he doesn’t
stop from doing his fashion as a part of business organization. I can also see the concept of job
satisfaction in the character of Ben. He helped his fellow workers, he arrives very early and clean
some mess and also his good relationship towards people. These are the elements that people
experience when he loves his job and it produces a good output on the organizational success.
There are times in any work or career path when you feel stuck or lost. But the key is to maintain
moving forward, as Ben reminds us. Yes, about a thousand times that was told, but it’s the reality.
Stepping stones from place to place. Asking for advice around us is a great help from the
development of one self. Business or any organization is not a one-man store but it is a team
undertaking and requires a cooperation and good relationship to each other in able to reach the
success. On the other hand, Jules is an example of new generational worker and CEO. She has
different organizational behavior compare to Ben. Simply the age gap is the main factor because
it. But Ben is the key to change Jules behavior and based on what I observed, he gave a lot charm
and positivity not only towards his co-worker but also to the success of the entire company. Jules
cares so deeply about so many things in her life that it drives the culture of the company and her
family. Ben’s observation of her walking folks in the warehouse through how to properly display
the clothes in the boxes reflects the CEO’s attention to detail and, more importantly, the deep
passion and commitment that she has for the company and its reputation. These things were
enhanced as Ben came. Ben changes Jules organizational behavior and also her relationship
towards her family were strengthened.
Respect is a key requirement for a healthy work environment. It promotes teamwork and
increases productivity and efficiencies in the workplace. It lets employees know they are valued
for their abilities, qualities and achievements, and that their role is important to their company's
success. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied
is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.
If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know
when you find it” (Jobs). Work is an essential part of our career as a human being we must learn
to love and enjoy it through up and downs. The Intern teaches important life lessons. The movie
tells its audience to never deviate from your goals and to never conform to societal ideals. I’m
aiming to apply these lessons soon if I able to get a job. Somehow, some of the lesson that I learned
from the movie can be apply now since I’m a college student.
