Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
A. Definition of Speaking
Humans are social beings who need interaction between one
another to exchange ideas, share information and experience. Someone
interacts or communicates with others through speaking/talking.
Speaking skills is the ability to talk at any time and in any situation.
When it comes to speaking skills –part from who are you? What is your
job? With whom do you speak? And…- you need to use your language,
you need speaking skills. If you want to be sociable, have a good
connection with your friends, transfer your means to others and try to
make a good impression so that they enjoy talking with you, you have to
know everything about speaking skills. First, you must improve your
verbal power. You have to use public techniques and practices. You must
know to whom you are talking and make them enjoy so that you can reach
your goals the way you want.
Be careful: if someone knows the skills to talk, it doesn’t mean
he/she is a good speaker, lecturer or negotiator. If someone has good skills
to talk, he/she has an excellent background to be a fantastic lecturer,
negotiator or teacher!

C. Problem in Speaking
The researcher found the problem in speaking skills is that the
circumstances don’t support the implementation of English language to
support its skills.

sounds in the form of pressure and intonation. (Anonim, 2013) based
on these opinions, it can be concluded that the pronunciation of
language songs is considered good if the sentences that are spoken
function the tone according to situations, the pause pressure must also
be right. (Muhajir, 1975: 29) suggests that errors in pronouncing
consonants and vowels will also mean what the said opinion clearly
states that errors of pronunciation of consonants and vowels will cause
the purpose of the utterance; different.
2. Fluency
More priority than accuracy, especially for students
beginner and intermediate. At least this option can help students feel
compelled to interact well with fellow English students (Herudjati
2010). Fluency in speaking has aspects including covering, fluent
conversations, fluency often experiencing disruption, speed and
fluency often seem to be interrupted by language difficulties, speech
stagnates, talks often stop and short (Bernabas, 2013). To increase
fluency in speaking simple steps that can be done by :
1. Listen
Listen to common phrases, words and diction. Listening to
BBC and CNN news broadcasts will be very helpful. Repeat the
new phrases that were learned with colleagues or family members.
Speak loudly. Mumbling in your heart won't help because your
mouth won't be trained to be used to move quickly in arranging
words. Listen and repeat.
2. Read and Read
Read quality books written by famous authors and good
English newspapers. We will find many new words by reading
books. Use these new words in sentences when talking to
colleagues and family or friends. But don't make it sound artificial.

3. Talk
Communicate in English as much as possible. It's okay to make
mistakes. Speak convincingly. That's how we increase fluency in
English. After the mental block is cleared, our fluency will
improve on its own (Amir, 2015).
3. Pronunciation
Pronunciation is one of the important aspects for elementary school
students in learning English.
A good pronunciation will be the basis for students to be able to
master English well. For this reason students must be guided early so
they have the ability perfect pronunciation. If not, students will make
fatal mistakes continuously. Because, when students have applied the
pronunciation of a particular word, they will always remember it and
use it. What's worse, this error in pronunciation will cause a
misunderstanding when students communicate in English (Puspitasari,
2013).
4. Intonation
Placement of the right intonation is the main attraction in
storytelling activities, even one of the determining factors in
storytelling effectiveness.
A story will be less interesting if the delivery is not too interesting.
The aspects in intonation are as follows: 1.) High low sound; 2.)
Syllable pressure; 3.) Short tone or length of tempo (Anggraini, 2015).
Suitability intonation is the main attraction in speaking and is a
determining factor. Although the problems discussed are less
interesting, the placement of intonations that match the problem
becomes interesting. Conversely, if the delivery is flat, it can almost
certainly lead to boredom and reduced speaking effectiveness. The
same is true for giving intonation to words or syllables. Sound pressure

which usually falls on the last syllable or the penultimate syllable, then
is placed on the first syllable (Ahmad, 2014).

A. Conclusion
Humans are social beings who need interaction with one another.
Interaction between humans can be done by talking/speaking.
Speaking skills make interaction in the community environment
work well. A teaching and direction is needed to practice speaking skills.
This can be done by someone by knowing the obstacles in speaking in
advance and knowing aspects of speaking. The aspects of speaking that
need to be achieved are aspects of tightening, attitudes and behavioral
aspects.
