Introducing our range of commercial boilers
Our boilers come in all shapes, sizes and materials. And we’re here to help you find the right fit. Each product

The heart of the boiler - the heat exchanger
We care about the material and construction of our heat exchangers as they’re at the heart of every boiler.
But why does the material and design make a difference? We’ll take you through the materials and their
qualities below.

Load matching If you know us at
Hamworthy you’ll
know that we talk
a lot about load
How to maximise efficiencies matching, but why
do we think it’s so

The overall efficiency of a multiple Why match plant output to load?

of time. This requires a large load from the heat source; the boilers. However, most of
the time the boilers will be working at much lower loads.
Therefore it is a really important
aspect of product selection.
The trick is to match both, peak loads and low loads without oversizing the boiler and
wasting energy. And to do, this you need a system with a large turndown ratio.

Turning it down
Let’s look at turndown ratios. Turndown ratio refers to the width of the operational range
15:1
Turndown
of the boiler, and is defined as the ratio of the maximum capacity to minimum capacity.

In a typical modular boiler system each module could have a turndown ratio of 5 to 1. So
a vertical stack of 3 modules will have 15 to 1 turndown. This gives you a substantial range
of outputs.

For example:

‰‰
1 x 250kW boiler module with 5:1 turndown ratio
‰‰ A 3-high boiler stack would be 750kW
with a 15:1 boiler turndown ratio
‰‰ This boiler can provide a seamless delivery of
energy at any output from 50kW up to 750kW.

This ensures the load is matched to warm the

building up and when you’ve got low loads
the modular boilers are not constantly cycling
and wasting energy.
The example above, with 6 boiler
modules, would provide a turndown ratio of 30:1

It’s about how you drive it

Just like your car, a boiler needs to be driven correctly
to achieve high operating efficiencies and close load
matching. A good boiler sequence controller will help
control the boilers in the most efficient way. See page 74
information on our boiler sequence controller.

Saving fuel, money and the environment

Accurate load matching ensures you only use the fuel you ££
need. This saves you money and reduces carbon emissions. And
depending on the size of the project, these savings can be quite
considerable.

Large vs small
But have you also considered the impact of replacing
one large output single boiler with multiple smaller
output modular boilers? The differences in gas
use for the right application can be huge.

A large boiler will have to fully heat up regardless of how

much heat is actually needed by the system. Whereas
smaller modules can be set up to come on at low
modulation, or only one module out of the system may
need to fire up to meet the demand. Plus, the smaller
modules will get to temperature much quicker than a
large boiler.

Changing heating system design – the increasing use
of wider temperature differentials (∆T)

Boilers
Traditionally, commercial heating Striving for maximum efficiencies
systems have been designed at
82/71°C or 80/60°C flow and The pursuit of low ownership costs from condensing boiler systems is a driver behind
this. If operating temperatures are reduced or delta T widened to offer a lower return
return. But, at these temperatures
temperature, then significant efficiency gains can be made.
a condensing boiler performs only
slightly better than a high efficiency The larger flow/return temperature differential was traditionally the reserve of large

capability with all the benefits associated with smaller condensing boilers – accurate

Now designers are looking to lower

Reducing costs
Under pressure
Designing a system that operates with
lower flow rates can provide benefits to Some modern condensing boilers can have quite significant pressure losses when
both, the installer and owner. operating with a narrow delta T. By using a wider delta T and thus, lower flow rate,
the pressure loss can be reduced having a substantial effect on pump size.
Lower flow rates lend themselves to Take a modern low water content boiler with reasonably high pressure loss associated
smaller pipe diameters. Smaller pipes are with the heat exchanger. If design differential temperature is increased from 20°C
cheaper to purchase, easier to install and to 40°C, the flow rate through the boiler will be halved. The associated pressure loss
waste less energy as they have lower heat through the boiler however is not just halved, but quartered. This allows the use of
emission rates due to a smaller surface smaller pumps with lower purchase cost and reduced lifetime energy consumption.
area. The water content of the heating
system will also be lower, having a direct
saving on chemical dosing and inhibitors
for water treatment.
The rise of the heat network
More projects are now specifying dual heating sources – where condensing boilers are
used to support the renewable energy source.

We are increasingly seeing 30°C or 40°C differential temperature requirements

in new build projects, in particular district heating networks where boilers are
supporting combined heat and power (CHP) plants for when the base load is exceeded.

CIBSE guidance AM12 – Combined heat and power for buildings, makes specific
reference to designing district heating schemes with a minimum of 30°C differential
temperature. This is to keep flow rates and pipe sizes small, and maintain a low return

Case study Mixed use development, London

Project ‰‰ Residential & commercial new build property

Products ‰‰ Ensbury LT boiler

‰‰ Wessex ModuMax boiler
A 100% liquid biofuel boiler from Hamworthy proved to be the
greenest heating option for a mixed use development in Hoxton,
East London.
Hamworthy’s Ensbury LT steel boiler using B100 biodiesel and a
high/low three-phase Dunphy burner specifically matched to the
fuel was specified for the project to provide the space heating for
this city centre development of 16 flats and a commercial unit.
Due to the city centre location, a site specific dispersion modelling
impact assessment to identify any problems for surrounding
properties was required.
Biofuel was shown to be superior to biomass, as it is a cleaner fuel Geoff Fox, from Fox Curtis Murray said, “Liquid biofuel
thanks to no grit or other particular matter in the flue gases. Also, presents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and also
less storage space is required for biodiesel, which is ideal for city qualifies for the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme which
centre locations. reduces the actual fuel costs accordingly.”
John Moore, Operations Director from Mulalley – the main A Wessex ModuMax condensing boiler was supplied as
contractors on the project commented, “Working with Hamworthy a standby boiler for service periods. Additionally, a Chesil
Heating on this project ensured the installation went smoothly and pressurisation unit with matched expansion vessel ensures
kept to projected timescales.” the correct pressure is maintained.

continuous output ranging from 228 litres/hour to 2,400 litres/hour.

Dorchester direct fired water heaters

All Dorchester ranges are built to last using high quality steel
tanks and heat exchangers. For the safe production of potable
hot water, a high quality vitreous enamel glaze is baked on to
all tank interior and heat exchanger surfaces, creating a hygienic
surface finish which gives excellent protection against corrosion.
Additional corrosion protection is provided by either electrical anode
protection or sacrificial magnesium anode systems, depending
on the range and options selected. All units are supplied fully There are 18 models across 3 different ranges in the Dorchester
insulated with CFC-free foam to minimise standing losses. product group, including condensing and solar options.

Powerstock calorifiers and storage tanks

The Hamworthy range of Powerstock calorifiers offers a flexible approach to indirect heating
and storage of hot water, using a choice of energy sources. High efficiency gas fired boilers
are commonly used with calorifiers as the primary energy source, but with the trend towards
incorporating renewable energy into DHW systems, alternative technologies can also be used.
Powerstock calorifiers and storage tanks are all approved by the Water Regulations Advisory
Service (WRAS). Cylinders are constructed from high grade steel with a high quality vitreous
enamel lining. The five largest units in the Powerstock calorifier range incorporate a twin coil
arrangement where two separate heat sources can be used.

There are 7 models in the Powerstock calorifier

range and 4 models of storage tanks.

Halstock calorifiers
The Halstock range of calorifiers provide an alternative to the Powerstock
where stainless steel is the preferred choice. Stainless steel cylinders are
often chosen for their anode-free corrosion protection, particularly in
areas of the country with soft water.
A highly durable, simple and easy to maintain product for efficient
generation of domestic hot water. The Halstock range has 5 models
available in open vented and unvented options. All models are approved
by the Water Regulations Advisory Service (WRAS).

Dorchester DR-TC and Trigon solar thermal hot water

For those considering integrating solar energy into commercial hot water systems, we offer two
solar thermal hot water systems, the Trigon solar system and Dorchester DR-TC solar system.
The diagram on page 53 shows the two different types of schemes and their key components.

With correct design and installation plus the use of intelligent controls, solar thermal
systems can use free solar energy by harnessing the power of the sun to reduce gas bills
and help combat climate change.

Direct or indirect
Helping you choose the
right hot water product
for your application

What is a direct fired unit?

Direct fired units such as our Dorchester water heaters
for hot water generation have an integral gas burner that
directly heats the water in its storage cylinder. This is done by
supplying hot gases through one or more of its heat exchanger

Water Heaters
fire tubes within the cylinder which then transfers heat to the

& Solar
surrounding water.

When using a direct fired unit, the heating and hot water
systems are separated.

What is an indirect unit?

Indirect units such as calorifiers have no integral
burner, but contain one or more heat exchanger
coils that are filled with hot liquids (water or solar
fluid) that have already been heated ‘indirectly’ by
one or more external heat source, such as a boiler
or solar collectors.

When using an indirect fired unit the heating and

hot water systems are often integrated.

Separation or integration Which product
should I choose?
Historically, indirect fired systems had a dedicated hot water
boiler used solely for heating a calorifier. But with the high
efficiencies of today’s boilers the same boiler can now be used
for both the heating circuit and the DHW system. This is down to personal preference and how the
application is being used. There are pros and cons to
using each method and we would always recommend

Introduction to flues
Our boilers and water heaters are suitable for many flue systems and we can provide flue components to
suit these schemes. You can choose from the flue types below or a bespoke flue system can be designed by
our flue partner, Midtherm.

Types of flue systems

Open flue Room sealed

Combustion air supply is drawn directly from the room, and flue Combustion air supply is drawn via ducts from an outside
gases may be discharged through a flue system using either an air supply. Flue gases may be discharged through either a
existing chimney (subject to suitability) or a ducted flue system. concentric or twin duct flue system. The plant room requires

reduced airflow, warmer room temperatures are possible - a

discharge above roof level, although some modern low output
gas boilers may have an open flue system terminating at low Room sealed appliances reduce the risk of flue gases spilling
level (in accordance with flue discharge requirements, see back into the plantroom due to poor flue operating conditions.
page 84 for more details). In certain buildings the boiler can be installed within occupied
spaces where a dedicated plant room may not exist.
Subject to specific risk assessment procedures
detailed in IGEM/UP/10 Edition 4, room sealed Concentric flue
appliance installations up to 333kW total Nett input
may be terminated at low level. A concentric flue system provides a very compact room sealed
flue, where the air supply and flue gases are managed within a
one piece concentric duct system. Typically using a duct within
a duct, the flue gases are expelled through the inner duct with
combustion air being drawn in via the outer annulus.

A concentric flue system will have the option for the terminal to
be positioned horizontally for exiting the building through the
wall, (subject to IGEM UP10 regulations) or vertically through
the roof. The need to only penetrate the building (roof or wall)
with a single hole is an advantage.

Modern condensing boilers generate condensate

from the flue gases at a rate of around 13 litres per
hour for a 100kW boiler, in condensing conditions.

Coping with condensate

When changing from atmospheric boilers to condensing, the
existing flues on this type of system are not able to deal with
a modern pressurised and wet system where condensate will
form. The flue system must be water and pressure tight, and
designed to drain the condensate from the flue and prevent
flow back into the boiler. Where possible, you may be able to
make use of the existing chimney with a liner, thus, enabling it
to cope with condensing operation.

How to order flue components Full details of flue systems can be seen in the individual product brochures.
To simplify the flue ordering process, Hamworthy has a flue order form available for you to call off all your flue component
requirements. To request a flue system order form, telephone 01202 662500 or email sales@hamworthy-heating.com and state
which flue system you are planning to use.

Danubius Hotel.

Sector
 Hotel & Leisure The solution:
SPIE UK installed four Wessex ModuMax mk3 WM254/762
Building (3-high stacks) modular condensing boilers with a total
output of 3,048kW including pipe header kits, a remote
 Hotel boiler plant room refurbishment signal kit and an entirely new pipework system including
an 11 metre long low loss header and interconnecting

Application
pipework. A flue liner was installed to deal with the
condensate and pressure generated by the new boilers.

 Space heating, DHW Commissioning of the new heating system was carried out
by Hamworthy’s approved service engineers to ensure the
boilers are set up to the manufacturer’s recommendations
for gaining maximum efficiency.
The challenge:
The hotel had to be kept running 24/7 during the change and a Customer feedback:
constant stream of incoming travellers from local airports
made downtime impossible. Boilers with 10 bar working SPIE's Senior Project Manager commented:

Schematics & System Design

After finishing the installation, we chose Hamworthy to

commission our boilers because it extends the warranty
and keeps it clean – I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Their team is very knowledgeable about their own
products and commission thoroughly. I have worked
with Hamworthy for nearly 10 years across projects and
have a good relationship with the sales managers. We
always receive excellent support and service, before and
after sales.

Since the installation, we have noticed massive

improvements in gas consumption. Where the
boilers before always seemed to be at 50% or
100%, the noticeable turndown on the Wessex
ModuMax boilers is amazing."
