Examples of Free Verse in Literature
Example #1: A Noiseless Patient Spider (By Walt Whitman)
If you are looking for free verse examples, then Walt Whitman is your guy. He
is known as the father of free verse English poetry. In this poem, only a
simple metaphor is used to mesmerize readers without employing regular
rhyme scheme or rhythm. We can see normal pauses in the poem unlike the
typical limitations of metrical feet.
This is one of the best examples of free verse poetry. In this poem, there is no
regular rhyme scheme or rhythm. It is without poetic constraints, but has a
flow that gives it a natural touch.

FLASH FICTION
Not all great flash fiction is bleaker than bleak! This winner of the 2015 Barthelme Short Prose
Prize couldn’t be much farther from the gritty, sober tone of most flash fiction. Written in the oft-
controversial second person, Behm-Steinberg’s story imagines a world where Taylor Swift (yes, the
singer) is available in abundance to anyone who cares to order one from the internet.
It’s a bizarre story: a meditation on capitalism, fame, and consumer culture. It’s also riotously funny.
Here’s an excerpt:
You’re in love; it’s great, you swipe on your phone and order: the next day a Taylor Swift clone
shows up at your house. It’s not awkward, it’s everything you want. She knows all her songs,
and she sings them just for you. When you put your Taylor Swift to bed (early, you got a big day
tomorrow) you peek over the fence into the Rosenblatt’s yard, and the lights are blazing. Your
best friend Tina has three Taylor Swifts swimming in her pool. She has a miniature Taylor Swift
she keeps on a perch, a Taylor Swift with wings. You’re so jealous. She’s not even paying
attention to them, she’s too busy having sex with her other Taylor Swifts, they’re so fucking loud
it’s disgusting. You hate Taylor Swift…
This goes to show that flash fiction’s sole purpose isn’t just to depress readers. Instead, its
constraints can allow the writer to distill their ideas into just a couple hundred words.
SHORT STORIES
The Planets :
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the four planets closest to the Sun. They are rocky
planets with a metal core. The next four planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are
gas planets.
They have rocky cores covered by liquid or ice with layers of gas clouds on the outside.
Moons are large rocky satellites that orbit a planet. Each planet has at least one moon,
except for Mercury and Venus which don't have any.
Asteroids are pieces of rock that orbit the Sun. Most asteroids are grouped together in a belt
between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are made of ice, dust and rock.
The inner solar system is separated from the outer by the asteroid belt.
The solar system is port of the Milky Way galaxy which is a barred-spiral galaxy.
There were 9 planets in the Solar System until 2006 when the International Astronomical
Union decided that Pluto could no longer be considered a plonet due to its size being smaller
than our moon.
If all the planets were joined together, the Sun would still be more than 700 times bigger. It
contains over 99% of the solar system's mass.
It takes two million years for gamma rays produced in the core of the Sun to reach its
surface.
The Sun is the largest object the solar system. It is about 332 950 times more mossive than
Earth.
The relationship between the Sun and the Earth drives the seasons, currents in the ocean,
weather and climate.
The Sun has been burning for about five billion years and will bum for another five billion.
If you stood on Venus, the atmospheric pressure would be the same as if you were 900
metres underneath an ocean on Earth.
Much of the surface of Venus, including craters, has been covered in lava from previous
eruptions.
Mercury and Venus are the only two planets in our solar system that don't have moons.
Mercury has the greatest variation in surface temperature of any planet in the solar system
— can be over 600 degrees Celsius.
Because there is no wind or rain on the Moon, any footprints left by the astronauts should
remain for millions of years.
It is thought that Earth was hit by a lorge object and the debris that was ejected into space
joined together to form the Moon.
The official Latin name for planet Earth is Terra. It is named after the Roman goddess of
fertility and growth - Terra Mater.
The Moon is the only other planet or satellite in the solar system that humans hove set foot
upon.
SHORT STORIES
"Why waste time sharpening your weapons when there's no danger in sight?" said the fox.
"You're being foolish."
Frightened by the boar's sharpened tusks, he turned on the fox instead and shot him dead.
Moral : Be prepared.
Aesop’s Fables : Monkey Business
After it had gone, an ass who craved popularity climbed the roof
and tried to perform the same tricks.
His servants went up, drove the ass down, and beat it black and blue.
Moral: Actions that suit others may not suit you. Be yourself.
Hearing him howl the farmer's dogs rushed to the spot and drove him away.
Two travelers, seeking respite from the searing heat of the midday
sun, took shelter under a leafy tree.
“What sort of tree is this? Does it produce edible fruits?" asked one
of the men to the other.
“It’s a plane tree," said his companion. “Don’t waste your time
looking for fruits. It produces neither edible fruits nor good wood.
It’s one of the most useless trees around."
“How can you say that when you’re enjoying my shade at this very moment?" snapped the
tree.
Moral: Often, a person’s worst critics are those who have benefited the most from him.
