A Tall structure made of Rectilinear shapes: Columns & Platforms

TIMELINE:
Launching Date: August 5-10, 2019
Initial Grading Date: September 2-7, 2019
Final Submission (of revisions): September 9-14, 2019
Mode of Presentation: Individual, Study Model with Oral Defense

INTRODUCTION
Humans had, by instinct, chosen to create with right angles. The unnatural straight line
became a determinant of human intervention into our built environment. According to Unwin
(2014), humans would create something that made him feel like he was actually creating. This
was to differentiate the natural and the man-made since geometrical rights are something the eye
could easily measure and recognize.

Building upwards had been present in humankind’s early history. Tall structures
command the skyline from the ancient times to modern day cities. Defying gravity demanded
innovation upon innovation in design, construction methods and material. They all stood as a
testament to the majesty and ingenuity from the hands that made them.

INSTRUCTIONS
Your task is to create a tall structure composed of rectilinear solids and/ or voids using
any inherently white material mounted on a 15in x 10in black foam board. There is no height
limit to the composition but it should fit within the limits of the foam board base — just make
sure it’s firmly built and will not topple down easily.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

LO1. Utilize design process by coming up with original and well-developed design
solutions.
LO2. Develop and familiarize with architectural concepts and solutions effectively in
visual, written, and oral media.
LO3. Gather research and utilize relevant information to perform architectural
coursework requirements.
LO4. Exemplify professionalism in following instructions, meeting deadlines, and
accepting constructive criticisms.

PROJECT PROCESS
The problem calls for a study model using exclusively the square shape and cube form that
mainly looks like columns and platforms.
1. Collect photos that can be a source of inspiration for your design; those that you think
can contribute to your final output. These photos are to be made into an Inspiration Board
2. Start sketching and present it to your AD1 Facilitator and get feedback. Edit and refine
your proposal.
3. Document your product and process in order to have materials for an end-course
assessment portfolio as a compilation of your works.
4. On a 15in x 10in black foam board, compose your Study Model. The material used shall
be fabricated with any inherently white material. Painting over the boards to make the
study model white is not allowed. Make sure it is firmly built.
5. Prepare a short oral presentation explaining your process and the initial output

Page 1! of 2!
6. Upon gathering all the feedback from your Oral Presentation, revise your work
accordingly
7. The final evaluation of your work shall be graded a week after the initial grading of your
Oral Presentation

OUTPUT REQUIREMENTS
1. Inspiration board showing pictures of desired product done in any letter-sized paper
would be submitted and commented on by the AD Facilitator before the next stage. This
would help students attain Conceptual Clarity along with student’s initial sketches.
2. Study Model on a 15in x 10in black foam board base; model itself should be made with
any inherently white material
3. Oral presentation explaining the project and will be immediately graded by the course
facilitator
Guide Questions:
1. What does the architectural form mean? How well were you able to
incorporate your Inspiration Board with the Model you came up with?
2. Is your composition beautiful? Explain your justification using terms
you’ve learned from Theory of Architecture 1.
3. What were the challenges you came across in designing upwards? Are
there aspects of the design you can improve on?
4. Photographs of items 1 & 2 (minimum dimension of 1000 pixels) saved into a Portable
Device/ Google Team Drive along with your other plates; individually collected or as a
class at the end of the term. This serves as documentation for possible publication with
Vision Magazine. It is also recommended that you photograph your process.
