Precautionary Measures on
Volcanic Eruptions
To the Learner

You have learned that volcanic eruptions can cause diseases,

death of people and other living things, destruction of crops and
properties, and other harmful effects. How can we prevent or
minimize the dangerous effects of volcanic eruptions? Find out by
doing the activities prepared for you.

Let’s Learn this

Practice precautionary measures before, during, and after a

volcanic eruption.

Let’s Try this

Put a on safety precautions for volcanic eruptions.

1. Follow orders and instructions from the concerned authorities.

2. Evacuate to a safe place if necessary.
3. Protect yourself from volcanic ash.
4. Return immediately to one’s home after volcanic eruption.
5. Repair the damaged house and clean it up.
Let’s Study this

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES ON VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

At present, scientist especially volcanologists can predict the

eruption of a volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology

(PHILVOCS) is a government agency that forecasts volcanic eruptions
and earthquakes. This institute collects and monitors any unusual
activity in the crust and mantle. It gives warnings to people living in
the surrounding areas of a volcano that shows signs of an eruption. It
determines Volcanic Danger Zones. These zones are places that are
directly affected by the materials released from an erupting volcano.

Predictions may not be accurate, so we may as well follow some

precautions for our safety.

Here are some precautionary measures to observe:

Before An Eruption

1. Listen to the radio for any order and instructions about

preparedness.
2. Store enough food, water, and other family needs.
3. Be ready to evacuate to safer areas anytime. Evacuation should
be done calmly and orderly.
4. Follow warnings and instructions given by concerned authorities.

179
During An Eruption

1. Stay in a safe place. If you are in an evacuation center, stop

roaming around.
2. Cover your nose with a handkerchief or a damp cloth to protect
yourself from volcanic ash.
3. Protect your eyes.

After An Eruption

1. Wait for instructions to return home.

2. Repair the house damaged by ash falls.
3. Clean up the area.
4. Make sure that food and drinking water are safe.
5. Check the electric wires.

Let’s Do This

Here are some precautionary measures on volcanic eruptions.

Place each precaution on the proper column of the chart by writing its
number. Number 1 is done for you.

1. Listen to the radio for any instructions about preparedness.

2. Protect your eyes from volcanic ash.
3. Repair the damaged house.
4. Store enough food, water, and other family needs.
5. Be ready to evacuate anytime.
6. Stay in a safe place.
7. Cover your nose with damp cloth.
8. Wait for instructions to return home.
9. Clean up the house.
10. Check the electric fun.

Let’s Do More

Identify the following.

1. a scientist who studies the nature and characteristics of a

volcano.

2. a government agency that forecast volcanic eruptions and

earthquakes.

3. a place directly affected by the materials released from an

erupting volcano.

4. a place where people temporarily stay during volcanic eruption.

5. a material that comes out of an erupting volcano and can harm

one’s body.

Let’s Remember This

I learned that:

• The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology

(PHILVOCS) is a government agency that forecasts
volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. It gives warnings
to people living near an erupting volcano.
• Volcanic Danger Zones are places directly affected by
the materials released from an erupting volcano.
• Precautionary measures before, during, and after
volcanic eruption should be practiced and observed for
safety.
• Before an eruption, we should listen to radio for any
instructions and follow warnings of the concerned
authorities; store enough food, water, and other family
needs; and be ready to evacuate to a safe place
anytime.
• During an eruption, we should stay in a safe place or
in an evacuation center; protect oneself from volcanic
ash especially our nose and eyes.
• After an eruption, wait for instructions to return home;
repair damaged house and clean it up; make sure food
and drinking water are safe; and check the electric
wires.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Choose and write the letter of the correct answer.

1. Why are precautionary measures observed volcanic eruptions?

a. To protect properties
b. To prevent the loss of lives
c. To pinpoint Volcanic Danger Zone
d. Both A and B

2. When is an area surrounding a volcano NOT considered a danger

area? When it ___________________.

a. is buried in lava
b. experiences landslides
c. is stable and far from the crater
d. experiences a range of earthquake shocks

3. A bulletin was issued to warn people that a volcano may erupt

within the week. What should the people living in the danger
areas do?

a. Follow orders to evacuate.

b. Wait for the next bulletin.
c. Cover the roof with wet sacks.
d. Reinforce the roof of their houses.

183
4. Ashes from an erupting volcano are all over your place. What
should you do to protect yourself?

a. Wear a hat.
b. Wear sunglasses.
c. Stay inside the house.
d. Cover the nose with a wet cloth.

5. Your family is going to evacuate. You are told to bring along

only a few things. Which of these will you bring along?

a. pets, toys and books.

b. food, water and clothes
c. chairs, tables and closets
d. candles, rags and matches

Science Fact File

VOLCANIC DANGER ZONE

Mt. Mayon Volcano Danger Zone is an example of a Volcanic

Danger Zone in the Philippines. This zone covers a 6-kilometer radius
from the top of Mt. Mayon down to the surrounding areas. This may
widen when volcanic eruption begins.
