Hello all!

Here I am with another fascinating session of Toda embroidery. Remember

how we did some amazing work with Toda last time? We’ll do a different
article today.
These days the embroidery style is not just restricted to shawls, sarees or
dresses but also to borders, table mats, bags, pouches and other such articles.
So today let us learn how to make a bag with the help of Toda embroidery.
First, let us look at the materials required
1. Anchor threads
2. Needle
3. Machine thread
4. Thread cutter
5. Fussing
6. Fabric
7. Measuring tape
Ready? Let’s get started!

➢ Take the fabric of the size 14/12 inch.

➢ Take one more piece of fabric of the same size along with the fussing of
the same size.
➢ Pick a fabric that has high yarn counts. You can also choose a fabric in
which the weaves are visible.
➢ In Toda, we don’t trace any motifs as motifs are created by our own
imagination while doing the embroidery. So think of a motif which can
be done in the center of the fabric.

➢ Thread the needle with two strands and don’t forget to tie the knot in
the end. Here the colour I’m picking is black.
➢ Insert a needle on the particular point on the fabric. Count 3 threads and
take it out.
➢ Now count for 9 threads and insert the needle. Count for 4 threads and
take out the needle.
➢ Count for 9 threads insert the needle. Again, count for 4 take the needle
out.
➢ Then again count for 9 threads and insert the needle. Count for 3
threads and take it out.
➢ Now, insert the needle beside the previous insertion leaving one weft
and one warp thread and form a loop. Count for 5 take the needle out.
Focus and work this out.
➢ Count for 9 and insert the needle. Then count for 4 and take the needle
out
➢ Now count for 7 and insert the needle again. Count for 4 take the needle
out.
➢ Count for 9 and insert the needle. Count for 5 and insert the needle.
➢ Now, insert the needle beside the previous insertion leaving one weft
and one warp thread and form a loop. Again count for 2 and take the
needle out.
➢ Count for 3 and insert the needle. Count for 2 and take the needle out.
➢ Count for 9 and insert the needle. Count for 4 and take the needle out.
➢ Now again, count for 5 and insert the needle. Count for 4 and take the
needle out.
➢ Count for 9 and insert the needle. Count for 2 and take the needle out.
➢ Count for 3 and insert the needle. Count for 2 take the needle out.

Done well till here? Now, you can see the simple pattern forming with two
diamonds on either side. Repeat the same process till the pattern is completed
as you see here.

Now, for the second color, thread the needle with red thread.

➢ Insert the needle at the middle count for 2 and take the needle out
➢ Insert the needle beside the previous insertion leaving one weft and one
warp thread and form a loop.
➢ Count for 6 and take the needle out.
➢ Insert beside the previous insertion by leaving one weft and one warp
thread by forming a loop.
➢ Now, count for 3 and take the needle out again.
➢ Count for 2 and insert the needle. Count for 3 and take the needle out.
➢ Continue the same process to complete the pattern forming the
diamond as shown on both the sides.
➢ Once you’re done with the stitching part, don’t forget to tie the knot, so
that your stitch is secure.
We’re almost done. Just a few steps more.
➢ Take the other piece of fabric and place it on the embroidery fabric and
stitch 3 sides of the fabric. Do the same with the fussing placed one
piece over the other and stitch the 3 sides.
➢ You will have to fold the edges of both fussing and the fabric and stitch
them as you can see here. Once you’re done with stitching, cut the
edges with the help of scissors.

➢ After that, turn the fabric and fussing to the right side.
➢ Once again take a new fabric of the size 4.5 by 36.5 inches. Fold the
fabric into half and stitch the fabric by leaving the side of the corner.
➢ Then turn the fabric to the right side with the help of the side which was
left open.
➢ Once you turn the fabric to the right side, fold that into half and cut
them into two with the help of scissors.

➢ Then insert the main fabric of the bag inside the fussing and also the
handle of the bag should be inserted inside the fussing as you see here.
➢ Leaving 3-4 inches in between, stitch the entire bag.
➢ Once you are done stitching, turn the bag to the right side from the left
out 3-4 inches. Watch how I do it.

➢ After turning the bag, you will have to stitch that 3-4 inches opening
using a needle.

There you go! Your Toda embroidery bag is ready!
