Issue 01 (2017-03-10) of SRAN12.1 introduces the following changes to Draft A
(2016-12-31) of SRAN12.1.
2 Introduction
2.1 Introduction
BBU Interconnection enables two BBUs to be connected through a BBU interconnection
signal cable. BBU interconnection includes infrastructure interconnection and baseband
interconnection and applies to the following scenarios:
A BBU5900 has 11 slots, as shown in Figure 2-2. For details on supported boards and slot
assignment, see BBU5900 Hardware Description.
NOTE
l The UMPTe supports MACsec. For details, see MACsec Feature Parameter Description.
l The BBU5900 cannot be configured with a UCIU. Therefore, a BBU5900 can serve only as the leaf
BBU if UCIU+UMPT interconnection is used. For other restrictions, see BBU5900 Hardware
Description.
The root BBU and the leaf BBU are determined during hardware planning. You can identify
whether a BBU serves as the root BBU or leaf BBU using the following methods:
l In UCIU+UMPT interconnection, the BBU configured with a UCIU is the root BBU.
l In UMPT+UMPT interconnection, the BBU at the end with the Master color-coding on
the BBU interconnection signal cable is the root BBU. Fiber optic cables cannot connect
BBUs in this interconnection method.
NOTE
The BBU interconnection signal cable in UMPT+UMPT interconnection cannot be used in UCIU
+UMPT interconnection.
A BBU interconnection signal cable is logically called CTRLLNK for an eGBTS, a NodeB,
or an eNodeB and is logically called BTSCTRLLNK for a GBTS. Between the two BBUs,
one BBU is the upper-level node of the other BBU.
In UCIU+UMPT interconnection, the base station supports a maximum of two CTRLLNKs/
BTSCTRLLNKs.
In UMPT+UMPT interconnection, the base station supports only one CTRLLNK/
BTSCTRLLNK.
GU+L GU L
GL+U GL U
NOTE
l In a co-MPT base station where two BBUs are interconnected, the primary and secondary main control
boards are configured in the root and leaf BBUs, respectively. The modes configured in the leaf BBU
must also be configured in the root BBU.
l In triple-mode base stations, a board of a certain mode must be configured in the same BBU as the main
control board of this mode. For details on the board configurations for each mode, see 3900 Series BBU
Hardware Description and BBU5900 Hardware Description.
2.2.4 Restrictions
When UCIU+UMPT interconnection is used in a triple-mode base station, the following
restrictions apply:
l The cable length between two BBUs is at most 10 m. If a cable longer than 10 m is
required, contact Huawei technical support.
l GSM boards must be installed in the root BBU.
l Monitoring devices must be connected to the root BBU.
l Boards in the same BBU must have the same cabinet and subrack numbers. Boards in
different BBUs must have different cabinet numbers or different subrack numbers.
Otherwise, common boards, such as the UCIU, cannot function.
NOTE
You can use the CME to modify the cabinet number and subrack number of a BBU. For how to
modify the cabinet number and subrack number, obtain CME Product Documentation, navigate to
CME Management > CME Guidelines > LTE Application Management > eNodeB Related
Operations, and follow the instructions in section "Importing and Exporting Cabinet/Subrack
Number Reconfiguration Data for eNodeB."
l A BBU3910 or BBU5900 cannot be configured with a UCIU.
l If two interconnected BBU subracks work in co-MPT mode, the root BBU must provide
a transmission port.
In addition to these restrictions, the following restrictions also apply when UMPT+UMPT
interconnection is used in a triple-mode base station:
l The distance between the root and leaf BBUs must be less than or equal to 5 m.
l UMPT boards of different types can be interconnected. The UMPTa must not be
installed in the leaf BBU.
l If the root BBU is configured with the GTMU, WMPT, or LMPT, cascaded RRUs
cannot be connected to the leaf BBU.
l Only BBU interconnection signal cables provided by Huawei can be used. Fiber optic
cables cannot be used.
l The root BBU must provide a transmission port.
l In a BBU5900, the main control board must be a UMPTb or UMPTe.
NOTE
For details on BBU5900 boards and slot assignment, see BBU5900 Hardware Description.
Inter-BBU Co-Transmission
When two BBUs are interconnected, the BBUs support co-transmission between two or more
modes. For details, see Common Transmission Feature Parameter Description.
Inter-BBU SDR
In inter-BBU SDR, a multimode RF module is connected to both BBUs. Figure 2-4 shows an
example of inter-BBU SDR in which the root BBU supports GSM and the leaf BBU supports
UMTS. The GU RF module is connected to both the BBUs. For configurations of multimode
RF modules, see RF Unit and Topology Management Feature Parameter Description.
Inter-BBU SDR requires that the clock of the leaf BBU must follow that of the root BBU. The
clock synchronization mode is selected according to the following rules:
l If the root BBU uses frequency synchronization, the leaf BBU must use frequency
synchronization.
l If the root BBU uses time synchronization, the leaf BBU can use either time or
frequency synchronization.
Figure 2-5 Cable connections between BBUs for UMTS baseband capacity expansion
Both the working standards of the root BBU and those of the leaf BBU include UMTS. The
UMTS baseband board in the root BBU is connected to that in the leaf BBU using a baseband
interconnection signal cable. Among UMTS baseband boards, only the WBBPf, UBBPe, and
UBBPd can provide HEI ports for UMTS baseband interconnection. If the subrack types of
the BBPLNK head and tail(1) are both BBU3900, a WBBPf, UBBPe, or UBBPd board can be
installed only in slot 2 or slot 3 (preferred) in each BBU.
A BBU baseband interconnection signal cable transmits baseband data and expands baseband
resources. A BBU baseband interconnection signal cable cannot be used interchangeably with
the BBU interconnection signal cable for UCIU+UMPT or UMPT+UMPT interconnection.
NOTE
(1) A BBU baseband interconnection signal cable between UMTS baseband boards (WBBPf, UBBPe,
or UBBPd boards) is logically called BBPLNK, which needs to be configured. Either end of a BBPLNK
can be configured as the link head or link tail. It is recommended that the end on the root BBU side be
configured as the link head. A CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK must have been configured before a
BBPLNK is configured. When both the root BBU and leaf BBU are configured with baseband
processing boards in UMTS mode, only one BBPLNK can be configured.
In the preceding scenarios, both the root and leaf BBUs are configured with UMTS main
control boards.
NOTE
For details on the board configurations for each mode, see 3900 Series BBU Hardware Description and
BBU5900 Hardware Description.
2.3.3 Restrictions
To expand UMTS baseband capacity, both the root and leaf BBUs must be configured with
one UMTS main control board. The board in the root BBU works as the primary main control
board, the ACT indicator on which is steady on. The board in the leaf BBU works as the
secondary main control board, the ACT indicator on which is steady off.
The following local operations can be performed only on the primary main control board:
l Software upgrades and data configurations using a USB flash drive
l Local operations on the LMT
l Clock test
l Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) testing using a USB flash drive
In addition, the following restrictions apply:
l Monitoring devices must be connected to the root BBU.
l In a NodeB deployed using the plug-and-play function, a UMPT must be configured as
the primary UMTS main control board in the root BBU. The root BBU must provide
ports for transmission.
CPRI fiber optic cables can be connected to any UMTS baseband board in either BBU. It
is recommended that all CPRI fiber optic cables be connected to the UMTS baseband
board in the root BBU. For details on CPRI cable connections, see 3900 Series BBU
Hardware Description and BBU5900 Hardware Description.
l The secondary UMTS main control board in the leaf BBU does not support co-
transmission.
l Boards in the same BBU must have the same subrack and slot numbers. Boards in
different BBUs must have different subrack and slot numbers. Otherwise, common
boards, such as the UCIU, cannot function.

During new multimode base station deployment, the mode deployment order remains
unchanged no matter whether the mode controlling the UCIU is first deployed. However, it is
recommended that the mode controlling the UCIU be first deployed. By doing this, UCIU-
related alarms can be reported in time.
l Independent transmission
l Common transmission (co-transmission)
Independent Transmission
During triple-mode base station deployment, each mode is connected to the transport network
through its own port and is deployed in the same way as that in a single-mode base station.
During UMTS baseband capacity expansion, both BBUs have a UMTS main control board, it
is recommended that the root BBU be connected to the RNC.
Co-Transmission
A multimode base station supports the following co-transmission modes to implement inter-
BBU co-transmission:
NOTE
When the GTMUa, GTMUb, or GTMUc serves as the main control board, GSM cannot be the mode
controlling the UTRPc.
The BBU5900 cannot be configured with a UTRPc. For other restrictions, see BBU5900 Hardware
Description.
In new multimode base station deployment scenarios, the UTRPc has the following
configuration restrictions:
l The UTRPc can be controlled by only one mode whose main control board is installed in
the same BBU as the UTRPc.
l When deploying a new multimode base station, it is recommended that you deploy the
mode controlling a UTRPc following a descending priority order from LTE to UMTS.
By default, the UTRPc is controlled by UMTS before delivery.
Table 5-3 lists the mode recommended for controlling the UTRPc and the related mode
deployment order when a multimode base station works in different scenarios.

In UMPT+UMPT interconnection, only the star topology is supported for the leaf BBU when
the root BBU is configured with a GTMU, WMPT, or LMPT, as shown in Figure 5-2.
Figure 5-2 Star topology supported between RF modules and two BBUs
Multi-Mode RF Modules
If multi-mode RF modules are configured, the dual-star topology must be used to achieve
inter-BBU SDR.
Figure 5-3 and Figure 5-4 show two dual-star topology examples with GU RFUs and GU
RRUs, respectively.
NOTE
For details about the CPRI-based topologies and specifications of CRPI ports, see RF Unit and Topology
Management Feature Parameter Description and CPRI MUX Feature Parameter Description.
5.3.5 Clocks
With BBU Interconnection, a base station uses one of the following clock solutions:
l Independent reference clock
l Clock sharing
Clock Sharing
The reference clock can be configured in either the root BBU or leaf BBU. The BBU
configured with the reference clock shares control data and clock signals with the other BBU
through a BBU interconnection signal cable and the BBU backplane.
For engineering guidelines for clock sharing, see Common Clock Parameter Description.
5.4 Deployment
5.4.1 Requirements
None.
Step 1 Designate the root and leaf BBUs. Plan the cabinet number and subrack number for each
BBU. If the leaf and root BBUs are configured in the same cabinet, their subrack numbers
must be different. If they are configured in different cabinets, their subrack numbers can be
the same.
Step 2 Plan the CTRLLNKs/BTSCTRLLNKs.
----End
The two ends of each CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK must be designated. By default, the leaf
BBU is the local node and the root BBU is the upper-level node.
The number of each CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK for the base station must be unique. The
numbers of all the CTRLLNKs/BTSCTRLLNKs need to be planned.
A CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK needs to be added for each mode of the base station. The
CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK configurations are the same for the two BBUs.
For details, see 2.2 Triple-Mode Base Station
Deployment.
Step 3 Plan the BBPLNK.
----End
The BBU baseband interconnection signal cable is logically called BBPLNK.
The two ends of the BBPLNK must be designated. Either end of a BBPLNK can be
configured as the link head or link tail. It is recommended that the end on the root BBU side
be configured as the link head. The default port number of the link head or tail is 6.
The number of the BBPLNK needs to be planned. Currently, only one BBPLNK is supported.
l Check the status of the Mx indicator on the UCIU or the status of the CI indicator on the
UMPT to determine whether the CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK is operating correctly.
– If the Mx indicator is green, the CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK is operating correctly.
– If the CI indicator is green, the CTRLLNK/BTSCTRLLNK is operating correctly.
l Check the status of the HEI indicator on the WBBPf/UBBPd/UBBPe to determine
whether the BBPLNK is operating correctly.
If the HEI indicator is green, the BBPLNK is operating correctly.
NOTE
An Mx port can be the M0, M1, M2, M3, or M4 port on the UCIU.
l On the U2000 device panel, you can query the master/slave indication of the BBU
interconnection signal cable between UMPT boards to check whether the cable is
correctly connected. The master port should be connected to the yellow end.
l On the U2000 maintenance console or the Web LMT, you can run the LST CTRLLNK
or LST BTSCTRLLNK command to query the cabinet number, subrack number, slot
number, and port number at both ends of the BBU interconnection signal cable.
l Run the DSP CTRLLNKSTAT or DSP BTSCTRLLNKSTAT command to check
whether the status of the CTRLLNKSTAT/BTSCTRLLNKSTAT is normal.
NOTE
The status can be queried only if the interconnection boards are configured and the command is
executed in the supported mode.
l Run the DSP BBPLNK command to check whether a BBPLNK is configured as
planned.
