BIOENTREPRENEURSHIP : BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN SOCIETY NEEDS

WITH KNOWLEDGE AND BRINGING SUSTAINABLE LIFE

Have you ever heard about how Thomas Alva Edison discovered the bulb lamp? It
was not discovered by accidents, but he made it after a vast number of failure. His discovering
was inspired by his need on lights when he was working at the night. At the first trial, there
were some lacks on this invention, the lamp only survived for 45 hours before it broke.
Gradually, this discovery was improving and fulfilling the needs of people who lives and
works at the night. Then, he patented his innovation and became one of famous inventor and
businessman that ever lived.1 The story of Edison that depicts him as entrepreneur.

In my perspective, Bioentrepreneurship is a breakthrough of entrepreneurship in life

science. Entrepreneur itself is characterized by discovering, exploiting the opportunity, and
motivating the process of change. The entrepreneur most likely takes part on accepting the
risk to leads their new business and create opportunities. 2 These characteristics impulse the
innovators, for example the researchers, to improve their innovation and apply it into real life.
Most innovation projects start with someone identifying a need, whereas the research begins
as the ways to fulfill that need.3 Knowledge is the part of research process to solve the
problem and to meet the needs. Nowadays, we have plenty kind of researching in the life
science especially in the field of health science.

The term of Bioentrepreneurship correlates to sustainability that means efficiency,

equality, and intergenerational equity based on economic, social and environmental aspects.
Sustainability means that being socially-oriented and respecting the needs of current
generations of society, especially in life science. 4 Concluding all the assumption about
Bioentrepreneurship, it means that this field brings the researches, created by knowledge, to
satisfy the needs of people in applied life science and turn the society to have more
sustainable life. Some examples are the discovering of antibiotics to restrict the spreading of
infection, the innovation of telemedicine to answer the needs on improving medical status
through technology, the portable USG (Ultrasonography) to meet efficiency in diagnostic
tools and patient education, and the other innovation. Yet, this assumption needs to be proved
by several methods.

The methods on proving this assumption will be divided into two steps. The first step
is collecting the data by interviewing people who do not understand about entrepreneurship
and people who have better understanding in entrepreneurship as the variables. The data are
collected by polling system through minimum 5 closed questions (30 samples for each
variable). The second step is doing literature research to match the assumption and find the
truth between assumption and theories. After collecting data, we discuss it to connect the link
between assumption and evidence based facts. Thus, the data and discussion are resumed and
ended as the conclusion with the clear statement.
