This article outlines a "sobjectivist" methodology specifically suited for the constructivist approach in international relations research. The author argues that constructivism needs to develop both objective and subjective knowledge about social and political issues. A sobjectivist methodology would be inductive, interpretive, and historical in order to understand subjective meanings and perspectives as well as place them in broader objective contexts. The article proposes a three-step sobjectivist methodology moving from discovering subjective meanings to objectifying them through contextualization and historicization. This approach aims to provide rigor to constructivist research while also facilitating discussion with non-constructivist methods.
