STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Computer science has become an innovative, diverse field as it has provided successful and
revolutionary solutions to the challenges faced by society and industry alike. It now plays a vital
role in all aspects of society ranging from financial solutions and connectivity to automation. The
research domains such as Data Science, Networking, Parallel computing, Pervasive computing,
Geographical Information Systems allow Computer scientists to work with scientists and
professionals across domains and contribute to the progress of the field. I have garnered both
exposure to real time software development and the challenges that the senior technical
personnel encounter. I aspire to become a research professional in Computer Science with
specialisation in Mobile Application Development, Cloud Computing and Network Security and
work towards creating solutions that provide both assistance and direction while dealing with
current social challenges and industrial challenges.

From the beginning, I have been curious about computers and liked working on them in the
school labs. However, my interest sparked when my father bought a computer for me. Internet
was a new technology then and I was fascinated with it. In my high school, my younger and I
brother got 10 minutes each to use the internet. I used to install many games for my brother,
repair errors, handle viruses and correct hardware connections. My interest in computers actually
began from these minor things. It started as a hobby, but along the way, I realized that I enjoyed
every problem-solving aspect of programming. Engineering was a natural career choice after
this.

Any tryst with sciences, mathematics or any area that needed analytical thinking brought out the
budding Engineer in me as I was not happy with just understanding a phenomenon but wanted a
real time experience of the same. This interest in logical and computational thinking led me to
take up Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my major subjects at the Pre-University level
after completing my Schooling with 93.1%. I completed my pre-University education with
93.4% and I topped in my class.

Pursuing my strong interest in Computer Science has over the years enabled me to develop keen
analytical and reasoning skills. Through the course of the four-year Bachelor of Engineering
(B.E.) degree program in Computer Science and Engineering at the prestigious Panjab
University, I have acquired an overall perspective of this scientific discipline, with a particular
interest in Data Structures. Database Management, Operating Systems, Microprocessors and
Software Engineering were some of the other areas that captured my attention. My keen interest
in the subjects translated into receiving A+ grade in the Database Management and an 'A' grade
in Operating Systems lab and in the other labs.

In the summer of 2016, I worked on a Banking Automation System, which is a GUI-based

project in Java. It handles all the banking activities like depositing or withdrawing cash, applying
for a loan, requesting a statement and so on. Additionally, during this period, I did a course in
android studio for app development. During the sixth semester, I did project in networking
which includes peer to peer video call and messaging based on WebRTC using Freeswitch ,to
alarm the authorities at time of any fire hazard by initiating audio and video call based on
WebRTC. Moreover, I've also written a research paper titled " WebRTC Based Security System
Application in VoIP Networks" along with other partners.
Apart from this, In the summer of 2017, I took up the internship under my college professor, I
spent a month and worked on a Home Automation System and its main objective is to make
home automated system using raspberry Pi. It indirectly attach different home appliances(LED's,
sprinkler) with Raspberry pi through relays and create GUI based interface with Blynk
application .The virtual buttons that are created on blynk (which serve the same purpose of
physical buttons) when turn on-off on app they will turn on-off the LEDs respectively or any
other appliance that is attached to it.

Apart from the projects undertaken in college, I wanted to research, and this prompted me to join
renowned government funded national laboratory CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments
Organisation, India. So, for the last semester, I took up the internship at CSIR-CSIO,
Chandigarh. I spent 6 months and worked on developing a mobile application to estimate the
quality of rice grains by extracting features like shape, size, major and minor axis location of x
and y axis which also requires knowledge of android platform and machine learning libraries like
Opencv .I was appreciated by mentors during project and obtained an 'A' grade in final
evaluation. Additionally, I also read various research papers regarding Face and Object Detection
and learnt basics of image processing, MATLAB, Python, Android.

Simultaneously, active participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities has ensured my

all round development of my personality. I have taken part in various cultural and technical
events and I have handled the role of being the Student Representative of the Computer Science
branch for four years, a responsibility that included acting as the bridge between the students and
the administration, scheduling additional lectures for the class, assisting the faculty advisor in her
duties and assisting the students in case of any problems. These experiences have brought to the
fore my leadership abilities, while also assisting in honing my social skills.

Furthermore, I have been a part of numerous technical events during my college's techno-cultural
fest and appreciated by my team leaders. During this period, I learned a lot about organizing an
event from scratch and making it a success. Additionally, being an active member of the Public
Relations and Tourism Committee of the university, I was able organize social events like blood
donation camps and tree plantation drives. These experiences have helped me in becoming a
better version of myself.

With aspiration of attaining in-depth knowledge and experience in <>, I have selected Master’s
program in <>. The program will allow me to gain in-depth understanding of <subject list e.g.,
and > and practical application of <>. As MS programs are linked to the industry trends, I will
also gain advanced knowledge of trending domains such as <>, which are used by practicing
professionals. The Master’s program will also allow me to keep up with the fast-paced world of
<> and give me the ability to design and create solutions in accordance with the emerging
technology trends and help me in gaining a global career in the field.

When I first started looking into possible destinations for my masters, one of the first institutions
recommended to me was <>. I actively started researching about the University and I found the
faculty and the research work to be quite impressive. I believe the next logical step for me is to
pursue Masters in <> program offered by <>, which would help me engage in research and
consequently enhance the frontiers of science and technology by working in the area of <>. I am
interested in the works of Dr. <mention name> whose area of research is <>. Dr. <mention
name> research interests include <> which also coincide with my interests. Moreover, the
program provides an opportunity to work on live projects with international firms, which is quite
tempting. Moreover, my recent interaction with some current students has encouraged me to be a
part of this esteemed university.
