Impact of Fashion

Fay Coldman & Reece Pocklington

Initial Ideas/Motive
● We decided to do something fashion related because it is the second
largest impact on the environment.
● We thought a photography project would capture the essence of the impact
of fashion quite boldly and have a long lasting effect on the consumer.
● Fashion is also heavily linked to photography via magazine covers and
posters, so this will be quite fitting.
● We thought contrast will be a good idea, where we can have a beautiful
model and outfit but in a horrible situation, expressing the harsh reality
of the industry.
● We also want to develop our photography and photoshop skills.
Facts that we are planning to use
● Every second, one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled
or burned
● Fast fashion isn’t free. Someone somewhere is paying
● The average british woman hoards £285 of clothes they
will never wear. That’s £30 billion of unworn clothes.
● It takes 2720 litres of water to make a t-shirt. That’s
how much we normally drink over a 3 year period.
● Shoes can take up to 1000 years to decompose
● Clothes can take up to 40 years to decompose.

Risk Assessment
Fashion revolution
Fashion revolution is a global movement that runs all year
long. They want to unite people and organisations to work
together towards radically changing the way our clothes are
sourced, produced and consumed, so that our clothing is made
in a safe, clean and fair way.
Recycling schemes in clothing stores
H&M have been doing a recycling scheme since 2013 to stop
unwanted clothes going to landfills. They do this by
accepting unwanted clothes by any brand, in any condition.
By handing in unwanted clothing you get a £5 voucher to use
towards your next purchase. All the clothes collected are
either reused, reworn or recycled with 0% going to
landfills.
Audience
We do not have a specific demographic because fashion
applies to everyone. Based on our models, our primary
audience will be young people of both genders. Furthermore
they seem to be more reckless with their clothing and more
invested in fashion than the older generation.
