Cisco Hierarchical Network Design Model

This hierarchical design model divides the design into modular groups or layers. Breaking up
the design into layers allows each layer to implement specific functions. This simplifies the
network design and therefore the deployment and management of the network.
A hierarchical network design includes the following three layers:

 Access layer—provides endpoints and users direct access to the network.

 Distribution layer—Aggregates access layers and provides connectivity to services.
 Core layer—Provides connections between distribution layers for large environments.

server. The details of the computer is as follows

 RAM – 8GB
 CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo processor
 Hard disk – 500GB
Server operating system - Windows server 2003 is installed in the computer. The problem is
Windows Server 2003 mainstream support ended on July 2010 and extended support ended
on July 2015. That means Microsoft will no longer release security updates for any version of
Windows Server 2003. This leaves the server computer unprotected.
The personal computer which is acting as a server is configured as

 Active directory controller,

 DNS server,
 DHCP server and
 Print Server
I am surprised the personal computer, Dell Optiplex 780, is working well as a server.

green pairs are interchanged
Straight through
Straight through cable is used to connect computers and other end of user devices to
networking devices such as switches. In straight through cable both ends of the cable will
have the same color code. That is either both ends will used 568A or 568B.
In Saba Dimensional Stones wiring standard 568B is used.

2.3.4 Software maintenance

I have performed windows operating system and different application software maintenance.
Software problems can be solved using the following technics

 Windows update
 Using system restore utility
 Repairing windows operating system – already installed applications , settings and data
will not lost
 Clean/fresh install – already installed applications and settings will lost. Every
application needs to be reinstalled. Data may also be lost if it is not moved.
 Application software problems are solved simply by reinstalling the software. Most
commonly used application software include Microsoft office applications (such as MS
word, excel, PowerPoint) , Peachtree accounting , Visual geez
The software maintenance technics that I used most are detailed as follows
a. System Restore Utility
Sometimes installing an application or hardware driver can cause instability or create
unexpected problems. Uninstalling the application or hardware driver usually corrects the
problem. If uninstalling does not solve the problem, restore the computer to an earlier time
when the system worked properly with the System Restore utility. Restore points contain
information about the system and registry settings. If a computer crashes or an update causes
problems, the computer can be rolled back to a previous configuration using a restore point.
System restore does not back up personal data files nor recover personal files that have been
corrupted or deleted. Always use a dedicated backup system, such as a tape drive, optical disc,
or USB storage device.
A technician should always create a restore point before making changes to a system in the
following situations:

 When updating the OS

 When installing or upgrading hardware

Hawasa University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Page 31 of 47

Internship Report on “Over all ICT works at Saba Dimensional Stones PLC”

 When installing an application

 When installing a driver
To open the System Restore utility and create a restore point, use the following path:control
panel > system > system protection > System Restore > Create restore points

b. Updates
Device Driver Updates - updating device drivers regularly should be part of IT activities to
ensure that your drivers are always current. Manufacturers occasionally release new drivers to
address issues with the current drivers. Check for updated drivers when your hardware does
not work properly or to prevent future problems. If a driver update does not work properly, use
the Roll Back Driver feature to revert back to the previously installed driver.
Operating System Updates - Microsoft releases updates to address security issues and other
functionality problems. Set a restore point and back up critical data prior to installing a service
pack.

Internship Report on “Over all ICT works at Saba Dimensional Stones PLC”

c. Fresh Windows installation

If System restore, windows update or operating system repair cannot solve a certain problem,
the final choice to be taken is re-installing the operating system and all applications.
The following need to be considered before and after operating system installation

 Before re-installing windows

o Back up your data
o Make a list of all necessary applications
o Make sure up to date installation media is available
 After re-installing windows
o Install Device drivers
o Update windows
o Install anti-virus
o Install necessary applications
o Setup and configure network connections
When conducting fresh install of windows operating system, the following points has to be
determined

 Type of operating system to install 64 bit or 32 bit

 Boot mode - Legacy BIOS or UEFI
 Hard disk partition – MBR OR GPT

64 bit (x64) versus 32 bit (x86) windows operating system

64 bit (x64) windows operating system 32 bit (x86) windows operating system
 Advanced security features  Less secured
 Higher speed because utilizes more  Lower speed because utilizes limited
hardware capacity e.g. utilizes more hardware capacity. Utilizes RAM up
than 4GB RAM to 4GB only.
 More virtual memory per process  more of your system memory will be
 Increased efficiency – less of your chewed up by secondary systems (like
system memory will be chewed up by your video card)
secondary systems (like your video
card)

Boot Mode – BIOS Vs UEFI

Both BIOS and UEFI are low-level software that starts when you boot your pc before booting
your operating system.

BIOS ( Basic Input/ Output System) UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware

Interface) is modern solution that supports
 This is legacy mode
 Does not support hard disk larger than  Faster boot time
2TB  larger hard drives than 2TB
 Works with MBR hard disk partition  more security features
 works with GPT hard disk partition

Hard disk partition type– MBR Vs GPT

MBR ( Master Boot Record) GPT( GUID Partition Table)

 Works with MBR hard disk partition  Works with UEFI mode
 Support four primary partitions  Supports more than four partitions
 Does not support hard disk larger than 2TB  Support more than 2TB of hard disk

 All Windows versions, both 32bit and 64bit, are compatible with MBR in data and
system compatibility.
 All Windows editions, except Windows XP 32 bit, are data compatible with disk
with GPT partitioning scheme.
 All 32-bit Windows version including Windows 10 32 bit are not system compatible
with disk using GPT partitioning plan.

2.5 Challenges faced and measures taken

Challenges while installing Windows server 2008 R2 operating system
I was given an assignment to install Windows server 2008 R2 operating system in a client
computer, Toshiba satellite laptop. The laptop with three partitions of GPT partition type where
one partition had windows 8 x64 bit installed, second partition had data, and third partition
was empty. I want to install the windows server 2008 R2 operating system in the empty
partition without affecting the already installed windows 8 x64 operating system and the data.
Challenge 1 - Windows server 2008 R2 operating system is not compatible with GPT type
hard disk partition, this can be solved by deleting the partitions and re-formatting with MBR
hard disk partition type. But deleting partitions and reformatting was not an option b/c the
already installed windows 8 operating system will be affected and the data will lost.
To solve this problem I just google the internet if there is software that changes the partition
type of hard disk without affecting insatalled operating system and available data, and I find

“EASEUS Partition Manager” which solved my problem.

So using “EASEUS Partition Manager” I changed the partition type from GPT to MBR and
the change boot mode from UEFI to legacy, I checked the already installed windows 8
operating system was working and the data was also unaffected.
Finally I succeeded to install Windows server 2008 R2 operating system.
Challenge 2 – I was not able to find Network and other drivers for Windows server 2008 R2
for the Toshiba satellite laptop b/c the laptop is not manufactured to work as server. But when

Hawasa University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Page 40 of 47

Internship Report on “Over all ICT works at Saba Dimensional Stones PLC”

I was googling my problem in the internet, I find a solution that drivers of Windows server
2008 R2 operating system is installed in client computer are same as drivers of windows 7.
And when I give a try, it worked. Finally I was able to install Active directory, DNS, and
DHCP.

Challenge 3: while installing XAMPP Server

When I try to run XAMPP control panel after I installed XAMPP server, I encountered the
following error when I try start Apache

“The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your

computer. Try re-installing the program.”

To solve this problem, I googled the internet and I find that the error can be fixed by updating
windows.

Generally, I solve the challenges using the following methods

 Asking IT staff of the company for support

 Browsing the internet for support

3.3 Benefits in terms of improving interpersonal communication skills

By the time I started the intern-ship program, it was difficult for me to deal with employees
that I did not know at the work place. But afterwards I believe that good relation and
communication skill is the key for getting the experience and knowledge required for the
internship program.
Finally I have gained confidence on how: -

 To ask different questions to employees to understand problems

 To make discussions with employees particularly with computer users
 To answer questions when my supervisor asked me.
So as a conclusion I can say I have gained good interpersonal communication skill during my
stay in the company and I understand how important it is in the work place.

3.4 Benefits in terms of team work

Teamwork is prerequisite to the success of any organization, and to the success of the
individuals who work there. It’s vital you keep developing the skills that enable you to
collaborate well with colleagues and clients
Team playing has a major important in order to achieve success in the process that involves a
group of people. Saba Dimensional Stones has a slogan which says “We are one team with
one purpose.” This shows team work is essential for the success of the company.
In the factory the work is already a team work. Without team work and understanding it is
difficult to achieve the goal that has been planned. And it needs more closeness of workers to
solve problems that arise in different.
In the section I have been assigned, I have been working in team with the IT staff to get a task
done. I have been working in team to solve a problem that I encounter.

3.5 Benefits in terms of improving leadership skills

I have been observing how the IT section/division head exercises leadership.

 The IT head makes sure the IT staff have weekly individual plan on Monday,
 Provides support on how to solve problems
 Properly listens lower employee problems and gives timely feedback
 Gives assignments to the IT officers
 Motivates for well performing employees
 Finally at the end of the week performance is evaluated

Therefore I have gained leadership skills from our supervisor during the internship period
which includes managing time, motivating individuals, giving feedback and building teams.

Hawasa University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Page 43 of 47

Internship Report on “Over all ICT works at Saba Dimensional Stones PLC”

3.6 Benefits in terms of understanding work ethics

I have come to understand the following work ethics
Punctuality:-arriving on time at work was necessary since it was part of my job to manage,
control, monitor and supervise the portion of the task I was doing.
Responsibility: -In the work place you have to take full responsibility for the completion of
the tasks you are assigned.
Office disciplines- in work place disturbing the working atmosphere is forbidden. For example
making loud voice, loud music, songs and things which disturb other employees’ working
mood is forbidden. Quarreling with employees is not allowed
Honesty- Regarding this value each employee regardless of its status should abstain from bad
behaviors such as cheating, bias, corruption etc..
Cooperation- Each employee should interact and cooperate with each other while working.
That is because it is through such system problems could be easily solved, which facilitate the
work flow in the company.

3.7 Benefits in terms of entrepreneur skills

Entrepreneurship is the ability to create and build something from practically nothing. It is
initiating, doing, achieving and building an enterprise or organization, rather than being an
employee. It is the willingness to take calculated risks, both personal and financial, and then to
do everything possible to get the odds in your favor.
One major benefit that I gained in the internship program is solving problems by myself and
problem solving is one of the starting points of entrepreneurs. So I can say I have developed
entrepreneurship skills.

4.2 Recommendation to the company

 I have observed the company using windows server 2003 operating system which is not
currently supported by Microsoft. This can leave the company network unsecured. So
I recommend the company to follow Microsoft’s support policy for the operating
systems and office applications being used. Windows server 2003 has to be replaced by
supported windows server OS such as windows server 2008 R2 , 2012 R2
 The company is using personal computer Dell OptiPlex 780 as a server. I recommend
for better performance real computer server need to be used.
 Attendance system should be utilized fully. Currently it is being used to identify
absentees only. But it is used mainly to calculate monthly working hours of employees
and to connect it to monthly payment. It is also used to record overtime hours.
 There are old computers with low processing capacity. So I recommend the company
to upgrade or replace the computers with slow and low processing capacity.
 Same data is entered redundantly in production, marketing, supply and finance
departments. This redundant data entry can be reduced by introducing integrated
computer system. So I recommend the company to implement integrated computer
system.
 Internet is unlimited for all computer users. This may lead for some computer users to
kill valuable work time on the internet such as social Medias. So I recommend for
internet usage to be scheduled and some unnecessary websites should be banned.
 The company is using personal emails such as Gmail, yahoo, Hotmail etc. The company
should use its own emails which is created on its website such as
IT@sabadimensionalstones.com.
 The server room and the IT office are the same. The cisco router 2910 has large noise
which is disturbing. Thus I recommend the server room to have its own separate room.
