Rev. Leigh Benish

Scripture: Proverbs 3: 1-8; Romans 12: 1-2

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another,
and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which
commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O
Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with
all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
-Mark 12:28-31

Merriam-Webster defines stewardship as “the careful and responsible management of

something entrusted to one’s care.” This includes money, but also involves things like our
time, our bodies, and the earth. Stewardship is faithfully caring for the blessings which have
been provided to us.

Our theme for the stewardship campaign this year is “How Do You Love?” Together we will
explore the commandments that Jesus lifts up as the greatest, reflect on how we love the
Lord and how we are stewards of our heart (finances), soul (spiritual life), mind (mental and
emotional health), strength (physical bodies), and neighbors (vocation).

When I first preached here on the Hill (over a year ago now!) I shared that this is my “desert
island” passage, the one that is the foundation of all of my theology. It’s simple – love God,
love neighbor, love self – but it’s simplicity does not mean that it’s easy. It is quite difficult
to love God, neighbor, and self with all that we have and all that we are.

Yet Jesus tells us that these are the most important commandments. And in his life, Jesus
modeled for us what it means to follow these commandments: he set time aside to be in
relationship with God; he welcomed those into his midst who others had turned aside; he
healed those who had been afflicted; he loved, deeply, even upon the cross.

Practically speaking, stewardship season is about money. We rely on your tithes and gifts to
the church to maintain all of the mission and ministry within our walls and out into the
world. Your money is necessary to keep the lights on, pay the salaries of our staff, provide a
safe space for the children in the neighborhood, serve the hungry, and so much more. We
are, once again, asking you to faithfully and prayerfully consider how you might continue to
give, and maybe even increase your giving, to keep us healthy up on the hill.

But more than money, stewardship season asks us a broader question: how are you being
good stewards of all that God has given you? Together this fall we will be exploring this
question, challenging each other and, hopefully, growing in our devotion to God and one
another. My prayer in the weeks and months to come is that we can all become more
grateful for the gifts we’ve been given, and find better ways to use them to God’s glory.
May it be so!

Peace-
Reverend Leigh

On a warm September evening, ten community dinner volunteers turned out to serve. Walls
The menu was sloppy joes, tossed salad, cheese sticks, and pound cake with peaches
and whipped topping. A late afternoon thundershower kept the number of diners low

at first, and we envisioned large amounts of leftovers, but the skies cleared and a total 9/8 77

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT
After a long period of time, we have finally heard from some of the student recipients
of our funds. The following notes were received around August 20th. Dated last
December, they had been sent via e-mail to the Darkuman Catechist instead of to us.

I sincerely appreciate your financial aid that you have tendered to me throughout my stay
in school. I have successfully completed St. Teresa’s College of Education and awaiting
my national service next year. May God bless you abundantly and Merry Christmas and a
prosperous New Year.
Yours Faithfully,
Mable Wurah

Thank you very much for the support you gave me during my time in the secondary school.
I have successfully passed my exams and am currently in the university studying
Communication Studies. It is a program which ends in 2022. May I use this opportunity
to wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Yours faithfully,
Elorm Asabea Akpedonu

Next month we will highlight more letters.

PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE

Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District Churchs, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie
Scholarship Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC
(USA), in your prayers. Also for Dr. McWilson ‘Koku’ Atakro, the Executive Presbyter and Moderator
for the West Volta Presbytery.

Christian Education News

We are off to a great start with our educational endeavors this fall. TUESDAY
MORNING BIBLE STUDY FOR WOMEN has kicked off a study of Revelation with a
full house. We spent a whole week on the differing interpretations of the book and some
of the basics of apocalyptic literature. Now we are beginning to explore Jesus’ messages
to the seven churches in Asia keeping an eye out for similarities to the churches we know
from our time. We can squeeze in another chair so if you’ve been thinking about joining
us, please do.
What an exciting night we had on September 18th when we welcomed back over 30 of
our Wednesday on the Hill kids. So many grown-ups turned out to volunteer- it was a
huge blessing to all the students. A special thanks to Ruth and Becky for stepping up in
the absence of our Mrs. Jenny. Once again, our teen students are helping with Bolt 1
music and we hear they were great. Our oldest students have some big things planned for
this fall- surprises for Mrs. Jenny and an entry in the Butler Christmas parade are only
two of them. We’ll keep you posted! Our new curriculum emphasizes learning practical
skills to use to share your faith. This term different groups are exploring music, art, and
mad science. You’ll be hearing more from us about this!

HARVEST HOME 2019

It is that time of year when our Deacons will be collecting food for the
community for the Thanksgiving season. The food will be distributed
through St. Vincent de Paul in time for the November holiday. For three
weeks food will be collected in the southeast corner of the sanctuary near
the organ console. The following are suggestions of food items by weeks—
though it's not a strict guideline, just a suggestion.

It is the Deacons’ hope that our congregation will continue to be generous in bringing in
food items and/or money donations to support our Harvest Home Project, and as a
result, benefit St. Vincent de Paul.

October 27: Canned and jarred foods; vegetables, fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce,
tuna, salmon, peanut butter, beef stew, pumpkin.

November 3: Boxed and bagged food; flour, sugar, macaroni and cheese, pancake mix,
cereals, rice, cake mixes, pie mixes, crackers.

November 10: Three-pound bags of apples and five pound

bags of potatoes which require the least cold storage
time. Other fresh vegetables and fruits cannot be collected due
to the lack of cold storage areas.

Our Deacons will again be sending out care packages to Hill Church members,
children of members, and grandchildren of members who are in college or the
military. Please use the form in the bulletin and place in the offering plate, give to any
deacon, or turn it in to Elean Heist in the Church Office on or before October 27th.

CARE PACKAGES – Address Form

The Deacons send care packages to members' children, grandchildren or
members themselves who are in college or the military. A new form is
needed each time. Please send a care package to the following:
