Electric rollerblade Project- Report N°1

Rene Aguilar, Alvaro Mendivil Date: 19/09/2019

Analysis of existing technical systems (Patents)

Introduction
Mobility solutions play an important role in modern societies. In the last few years
there as been a growing interest in electric mobility solutions. Quite recently,
considerable attention has been paid to personal electric devices such as scooters or
bikes. This report presents an overview of an electrical rollerblade existing systems.
A key limitation of these inventions is the lack of preliminary engineering
calculations. This issue is extremely important and can demonstrate the limitations
and reliability of current solutions.
Existing technical systems
In recent years, research on mobility solutions has become very popular. Previous
patents have documented that it is possible to design an electric driven roller blade.
In the literature, several solutions have been proposed to integrate electrical motors
with conventional rollerblades. However, there are still some interesting and
relevant problems to be addressed. This section discusses the current state of art of
electric roller blades and similar devices. In addition, key points and limitations of
actual devices are highlighted.
Patent N°1: ELECTRIC POWER GENERATING DEVICE FOR A ROLLER SKATEUS
2004/004634.0 A1
This device has a wheel with a simple electric generator to power the light of the devices.
This invention shows the suitability of using electric generators for low power applications.
This concept can be applied for other applications like a power source to charge a cellphone.
Key points: Power, generator, charge.
Patent N° 2 Motor driven roller skates 5,236,058
This device is a combination of a conventional roller skate and a motor adapted to drive the
wheels. It is needed an auxiliary wheel to start the main motor. The skater starts the skating
in a conventional manner, and when enough speed has been achieved, the skate is pivoted
about the rear wheels to cause the auxiliary wheel to contact the surface. This contact turns
the auxiliary wheel which jump starts the motor.
Key points: Starting, brakes, transmission.

Patent N°3 Motorized inline blade roller skate 5,829,543

This invention provides a motorized in line rollerblade that propels a user with a
minimum of weight or discomfort. In addition, it has a motor brake to slow down the
speed of a user. Other features of this device are his inexpensive manufacture and
maintenance costs. This patent does not give details about the propulsion system.

Key points: Manufacture, maintenance, brakes.

Patent N°4 Shoe with retractable motorized wheels US 2009/0120705 A1

This invention consists in a pair of shoes with retractable motorized wheels. The
propulsion system consists of a DC electric motor and train drive. The motor is
controlled by a hand-held throttle. This device has a complicated transmission
system and the patent does not give quantitative technical details.

Key points: Shoes, DC motor, control.

Conclusions
From the research that has been carried out, it is possible to conclude that the
inventions don’t care about technical or quantitative quantities such as power,
battery capacity, momentum, velocity, etc. Based on the analysis, the inventions
describe only shape constructions and conceptual designs. The finding suggest that
is necessary to make some preliminary calculations to ensure the reliability of the
product. The next stage of our research must include an analysis of the main physical
quantities and technical requirements. Finally, more research into the propulsion
system is necessary to extend our knowledge of electric driven rollerblades.
