“THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN EDUCATION FOR INDONESIA’S

ADVANCEMENT”

Ladies and gentlemen

Indonesia, as we know is a country that has gone through grave history. History
makes a very big effect in globalization. One of it is the advancement of our country.
Being a victim of war and invasion makes the development of technology and economy
in Indonesia got left behind. Education is one of the key to speed up both economy and
technology development in our country. Because before technology appeared, knowledge
was the first thing that sparks tons of ideas. And along with the development of science,
technology continuously develops up till this point.

Science is another factor for the advancement of a country. This creates a

question,”HOW TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE?”. The answer is only Education. Education
is a tool to access knowledge. Because no matter how great you are, you will not be able
to get knowledge without EDUCATION!. Talking about education, we will also realize
how important language is in learning process. Without mastering the language, it’s
impossible for us to go through process of education smoothly. The ability to deliver
opinion and to understand and respond other’s opinion are some examples of language
usage. All of them are also included in teaching and learning process in.

So, is learning foreign language important for the sake of the advancement of
education in Indonesia? Absolutely. Mastering foreign language is very important to raise
the quality of education in Indonesia, especially English. Because English is an
International language which is used in almost all of the countries in the world. Because
of that, there would be tons of problems that appear for countries that don’t use and teach
English as one of the lessons in teaching and learning process. That’s why English is
learned ever since as early as Elementary grade up to University.

The education in Indonesia or the other countries in the world is also closely
related to the quality of the book. Think of education as a gun, then the book would be
the bullet. a gun wouldn’t be useful without the bullet, and likewise, the bullet would be
totally useless if not for the gun. That’s how close education and book is tied one another.

Ladies and gentlemen

There are so many books which is written in English and have not been translated
into Indonesia. These are mostly books from scientists and experts who wrote their
research, journal, and invention only in English. If we only use the book which is written
in Indonesia for the education process, this will cause a gap due to the lack of knowledge
because everything that we learn is ridiculously limited to the language. This significance
that we must learn English in order to maximize our knowledge pool and also for the sake
of the development of our education. If English was not learned in Indonesia, that means
that Indonesian people won’t be able to speak English.consequentially speaking, our
country would experience a great drawback and will simply be a country that won’t be
worth considering from developed country perspective, thus it’s obvious that English is
incredibly important.

Looking at this bad example that I mentioned and what caused it, one of the most
considerable factor is education. In the other words, education in general and specifically
Indonesia won’t be worth to be considered as a good quality if English is not on the
subject list.

Remembering how important English is, there have been so many ways that have
been made to make us able to learn it faster, whether it’s by the formal way like school or
non formal way like courses or autodidact. There are also lots of education institution that
utilize something like games to make students interested so that they can understand
English easily. Some competitions are often held in order to measure the ability of
students and also to increase their ability in English through competitive scene, like
English debate, English speech (just like what we’re doing now), etc. All of these are
ways to improve the quality and for the betterment of our Indonesia’s education.

Ladies and gentlemen

Before ending this speech, let me conclude the essential points of my speech:
1. Knowledge is the key for the development of our country
2. Without education we won’t be able to gain knowledge
3. The education in Indonesia would be much less useful without English as a main
subject.
Finally I hope that my explanations could help broaden your point of view and also
realize that English as an International language is very important for our education and
education is just as prominent as one of the main factor of our country’s development.
