Total FMD vaccination coverage is very limited i.e. <2.5%. At present, at least 5 FMD vaccines are
available in the country including 3 imported and two locally manufactured vaccines. These vaccines
have different formulations of subtypes. Field efficacy of these vaccines is variable and there are
frequent reports of FMD outbreaks in animals vaccinated with certain products.

There is a high demand for FMD vaccinations due to increase number of cases reported in Punjab,
Pakistan in 2018. Pakistan has launched National FMD Control Program titled "Risk Based Control of
Foot and Mouth Disease in Pakistan 2018-2024" at a cost $6.598 million
Countrywide program is expected to move Pakistan's FMD control efforts from stage-2 to stage-3 of
global progressive control pathway (PCP)
According to FAO, FMDV serotypes A and O were detected in Punjab & 66 FMD outbreaks due to
serotypes A, Asia 1 and O and untyped were reported in two provinces of Pakistan conducting
surveillance activities in 2018.
Types of FMD virus serotypes found in Pakistan:
FMDV serotypes A and O were detected in Punjab during July 2018. Punjab is also conducting
emergency and preventive vaccinations campaigns with the respective administration of 550 and

For years, farmers have tried to prevent FMD by using locally available vaccines, but FMD appeared to
be resistant to vaccination. For supporting farmers, FAO promotes development and use of vaccine
against FMD in various dairy communities throughout Pakistan.
The vaccine is designed to work against the locally available strains of FMD virus, and is twice as potent
as the generic FMD vaccines available in the market. During the three years of the project,
approximately 200,000 animals have been receiving routine vaccination, and another 200,000 received
emergency vaccination during FMD outbreaks in various dairy communities across the country.
