Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: How to solve a one variable solution.

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 7th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE7.EE.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real‐world or mathematical problem, and construct
simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Technology Standard Addressed:
4a- Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating
innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
4b- Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design
constraints and calculated risks.
6b- Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
6c- Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital
objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
6d- Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended
audiences.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students are able to use multiple types of representation to explain how to solve one variable equations
which allows for all students to see and hear different ways of solving one variable equations. Students are
creating content and researching the topic causing students to think at high bloom levels. Students are
engaged because they are given the choice of how to represent their research. Allowing students to create
the board and then practice problems gives students two different ways to understand the material because
some students are self-learners while others need practice.
Lesson idea implementation
The lesson will begin by teachers playing a video about how to solve one variable equation and go over the
vocabulary needed for this lesson. Students will access the Discovery education board builder app and create
a board about solving one variable equations. They can include videos of them solving an equation, step by
step how to’s, hyperlinks to sites about solving one variable equations, etc. in order to fully explain the topic.
They will be given two class periods to create the board.
Students will be assessed by their understanding of solving one variable equations. They will also be given a
worksheet with 4 problems on it to make sure they know how to solve and this will be taken as a formative
assessment and given after the students have presented their boards. The final product allows for students to
create different ways to understand solving one variable equations. They can choose how to display the topic
on the board through the use of presentations, videos etc.. Students will be paired by how they scored on the

pre-assessment, if they did well they will be paired with students who struggled on the test so they can help
guide their partner when needed.

Reflective Practice:
After creating this lesson, I feel that the activities allow for students to not only understand the procedure on
how to solve an one variable equation but allows for student to conceptually understand the material
because they learned the material in a way they choose fits them best. To further understand this topic the
teacher can begin to add in word problems that incorporate one variable equations to make students find the
important information in the word problem. Students can create their own word problems with a worked-out
solution and create a document with all the problems and solutions. The teacher can then crate a scavenger
hunt where they use the word problems students created giving their work meaning and authenticity.
