Analyzation of drawing
The room I chose to do my layout of was a geography class that was made up of
predominately freshmen and sophomores. The classroom had a convenient layout for the amount
of people that were in the class room. It was a general ed. Room and had quite a few people with
IEP’s. one table was either completely deaf or hearing impaired. The room was set up so that the
teachers could help easily but also to promote the students interaction in the hopes that the
general education students could help the students that needed more help. The students were able
to access the teachers that were in the room easily because the layout allowed anyone to walk up
without being hindered by rows of desks in the way. The supplies were also easy for the students
and teachers both to access. There was ample counter space around the entire class room as well
as cabinets with supplies that they may need for instruction. The desks were also set up in a way
that the students could see the over head projector as well as the whiteboard. The only downside
to this class room as you can see by the drawing was that the class, like many classes, was
overcrowded. There were a few students that were right by the door. And some that were right
by the teacher’s desk. They might have some problems seeing the projector. The teacher allowed
the students in those seats to sit directly at his desk for a better view during these times. That is
not ideal but given the limitations of the classroom size verses the amount of people in the room
The strengths of this arrangement are the cooperation that I saw happening between the students.
They were helping each other with their classwork. And the way the teacher had them set up was
to have the students of all ability levels mixed in with one another so that they could learn from
one another as well as from the teacher. The exception to this was the students that were deaf,
they had a table to themselves because they needed special instruction from a sign language
assistant. Given the space that this class had to work with I couldn’t see a different way it could
The classroom was not entirely full when I observed it there were a few students absent due to a
bus being late, so they showed up at the end of the first period. But almost every seat was taken
by a student once they all showed up. There were about 29 students total once everyone was
present. With one student being absent. So, the class at full capacity would be 29 students, 2
teachers (one teacher and one teaching assistant), 2 special education teachers (both providing
sign language for the hearing impaired), and myself. It was a fair mix of male and female
students, with the teachers being mixed as well. Most of the students seemed to be social with
one another except for a female student that were sat near the back corner, the teacher explained
to me that she has emotional issues and he allows her to be private and not socialize if she feels
like it. He told me that she was more comfortable working alone and not socializing and he did
not want to make her uncomfortable, so he allows her to be alone if she wants. There were only a
few questions addressed to the teacher during that period and the teacher had easy access to the
student to give one on one instruction because that day they were working from the book with
little lecture time. The teacher said he sets his class up this way to allow the students to explore
the information themselves and not bore them with long lectures. This also allows them time to
ask individual questions without feeling embarrassed if they don’t understand something. The
day I was observing there were no students that received either praise or were necessarily
ignored, even the students that were deaf got one on one time to have their questions answered.
